Shane RIOPELLE – Theft, Trafficking

(NORTH GRENVILLE, ON) -Thefts of rental trailers in North Grenville and Smiths Falls have led to drug trafficking charges against a resident of Gatineau.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Region Community Street Crime Unit had begun investigating the theft of utility trailers in the area on October 21 and 25. These were connected to thefts of similar trailers October 27 and 28 in Smiths Falls.

Working with the Smiths Falls Police Service and Gatineau Police, a suspect was identified, and on October 29, 2024, the OPP Street Crime Unit made an arrest at a location on Rideau Street in Ottawa.

Officers seized nearly 30-grams of suspected fentanyl and almost two grams of suspected crack cocaine.

Shane RIOPELLE, age 43 of Gatineau, has been charge with:

  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking – two counts
  • Theft over $5000

The accused was released from OPP custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on November 15, 2024.

The individual was then turned over to the custody of Smiths Falls Police and was held for a bail hearing.

Mitchell BARINK – Attempt Murder With Firearm

(QUINTE WEST, ON) – – The Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has released the name of the accused individual in connection with an attempted murder that occurred in Quinte West.

On October 31, 2024, at approximately 2:00 a.m., members of the Quinte West OPP, Quinte West Fire and Emergency Medical Services, OPP Emergency Response Team, OPP Canine Unit, Quinte West OPP Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services responded to the area of Belleville Street in Frankford, after a shooting was reported.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a trauma centre for treatment. Officers arrested one person located a short distance away.

As a result of the investigation, Mitchell BARINK, 27 years old from Frankford, has been charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

•         Attempt to commit murder using firearm, sec. 239(1)(a.1)

•         Discharge firearm with intent, sec. 244(1)

•         Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, sec. 88(1)

The investigation continues under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on November 4, 2024.

Drug Bust – Names Released

(PICTON, ON) – The East Region Community Street Crime Unit has arrested and charged two individuals after executing a search warrant in Picton yesterday.

On October 31, 2024 a search warrant was executed on Old Milford Road. As a result of the warrant, officers seized nine firearms and a quantity of suspected cocaine.

Adam MCCONNELL, age 35 and Alisha ZACHARIAH, age 36, both from Prince Edward County were charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition – nine counts
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm – nine counts

Both individuals were held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice on November 1, 2024.

Hugh MACDONALD – Hit & Run

(PUSLINCH TWP, ON) – Wellington County OPP charges Puslinch resident with failing to remain after a two-vehicle collision.

On October 30, 2024, just after 6:30 p.m., the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a fail to remain collision at the intersection of Wellington Road 35 and Concession 2, within the township of Puslinch.

As a result of the investigation, Hugh MACDONALD, 63-years-old of Puslinch, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with the following:

  • Failure to stop after accident

The accused has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice – Guelph on December 6, 2024.

12 Year Old Facing Multiple Assault Charges

(LAMBTON SHORES, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Lambton County, has charged a young person following a disturbance at a school in Forest.

On October 31, 2024, at 1:20 p.m., members of the Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to an address on MacDonald Street in Forest, Lambton Shores, for the report of a disturbance.

As a result of the investigation, a 12-year-old of Lambton County, has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

·      Assault (four counts)

·      Assault Cause Bodily Harm – Choke, suffocate or strangle

·      Mischief – destroys or damages property

There were no serious injuries reported.

The accused has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date to speak to the charges.

The youth’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).

Robert Schmitz – Impaired Driving

(GREY HIGHLANDS, ON) – On October 31, 2024, at 5:42 p.m., the Grey Bruce OPP responded to a traffic complaint of an impaired driver on Highway 10 in Markdale, Grey Highlands.

Robert Schmitz, 26, of Melancthon was charged with:

·      Operation while Impaired – alcohol and drugs

·      Failure or refusal to comply with demand

·      Breach of recognizance (two counts)

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on December 5, 2024.

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute.

If you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, it is important to call 9-1-1 to report it. The OPP relies on the public to report crime. Impaired driving is a crime that should be treated no differently.

Scott REED – Arson

(Orillia, ON) – The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a person for Arson in the City of Orillia.

On October 31, 2024, at approximately 5:40 pm the Orillia OPP responded to a call from the Orillia Fire Department (OFD) of a fire at a residence on King St. in Orillia.

Officers attended the scene and observed the OFD extinguishing the fire in one of the apartments. The fire was contained to one unit of the apartment building.

Scott REED, age 39, of Orillia was arrested and charged with the following;

  • Arson – Damage to Property
  • Common Nuisance – endanger life

 The accused was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries related to the fire and remains in police custody pending a bail hearing.

Navdeep GILL – Drunk Driving

(CALEDON, ON) – Officers from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a driver reported as suspicious vehicle with impaired operation for having a BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of nearly four times the legal limit.

On October 24, 2024, shortly after 6:00 p.m., Caledon OPP was dispatched to the area of Ivan Avenue, in the Town of Caledon, for a report of a suspicious vehicle. Officers located the vehicle and the driver. During the interaction, grounds were formed that the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol and was subsequently arrested. 

As a result of the investigation, Navdeep GILL, 41, of Caledon, was charged with:

• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concertation (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on November 14, 2024, to answer to the charge. The driver’s licence was also suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven.

Samantha HACKSON – Impaired Driving

(SHELBURNE, ON) – Members of the Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged an Orangeville resident with impaired operation related offences as the result of a traffic complaint.

On October 29, 2024, just after 2:00 p.m., Dufferin OPP officers were dispatched to a traffic complain in the area of Col. Phillips Drive in the Town of Shelburne. The officers located the vehicle and were quickly led into an impaired by drug investigation.

Samantha HACKSON, a 39-year-old female, from Orangeville has been charged with:

•      Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

 •     Poss of a Schedule I Substance – Opioid (other than heroin)

The accused individual is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville. Their driver’s licence was suspended 90 days, and their vehicle impounded for 7 days.

Subramannie MAHADEO – Drunk Driving, Etc.

(CALEDON, ON) – Officers from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a driver of a commercial motor vehicle with impaired operation.

On October 29, 2024, shortly before 5:00 p.m., Caledon OPP was dispatched to a traffic complaint in the area of King Street and Dixie Road, in the Town of Caledon. A motorist reported being concerned over the manner a commercial motor vehicle was being operated. Officers located the vehicle. During the interaction with the driver, grounds were formed that the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol and was subsequently arrested.

As a result of the investigation, Subramannie MAHADEO, 49, of Brampton, was charged with:

• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concertation (80 plus)

• Operation while impaired – alcohol

• Fail to stop for police

• Drive commercial motor vehicle in contravention of conditions

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on November 14, 2024, to answer to the charges. The driver’s licence was also suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven.

Drug Bust – Names Released

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON) – Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Ontario Provincial Police – Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), Kawartha Lakes Police Service – Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU), OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and OPP K9 executed a section 11 CDSA Search Warrant on a residential property in the Town of Lindsay. As a result of the warrant a quantity of crack cocaine, fentanyl, proceeds of crime, indicia of drug trafficking and a stolen Toronto Firefighter badge was seized.

The following have been arrested and charged:

Matthew RUTTAN, 44 years of age, of Lindsay was charged with:

·      Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000

·      Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine

Braydon MISANCHUK, 23 years of age, of Lindsay was charged with:

·      Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 x2

·      Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine

Both accused were held for a Bail Hearing with the Ontario Court of Justice.

Brett WILSON Was Arrested Again

(LATCHFORD, ON) – One person was arrested and charged with impaired driving after a disturbance in Cobalt.

On October 30, 2024, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), responded to a disturbance at a residence on Nickel Street. Upon arrival, a person was observed fleeing the scene in a motor vehicle.  Police later located the driver and vehicle at a business on Main Street in Latchford. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and transported to the Temiskaming Detachment for further testing.

Brett WILSON, 50 years-of-age, from Charlton, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand – two counts
  • Resist peace officer
  • Causing a disturbance
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Driving while under suspension – two counts
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit
  • Use defaced plate
  • Fail to surrender suspended, revoked or cancelled licence
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Haileybury Ontario Court of Justice on October 31, 2024.

Shots Fired In Road Rage Incident

(MUNICIPALITY OF BROCKTON, ON) – South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Crime Unit is investigating an incident involving road rage that resulted in gunfire in the Municipality of Brockton.

On October 30, 2024, just before 11:00 p.m., South Bruce OPP officers responded to a residence on Bruce Road 1, near Paisley.

Police discovered that a pickup truck had followed another vehicle to a residence on Bruce Road 1 where gunshots were subsequently fired after an earlier interaction on the roadway.

At this time, no injuries have been reported to police.

Investigators are still at the scene and are asking the public to avoid the area.

School Bus Collision

(PEMBROKE, ON) – A school bus driver has been charged after a two-vehicle collision in Pembroke involving a school bus and passenger vehicle.

Members of the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to the collision at the intersection of Pembroke Street East and William Street just before 4:00 p.m. on October 30, 2024.   

The school bus, which was northbound on William Street, collided with a minivan as it attempted to cross Pembroke Street East. In addition to the driver, there were 14 elementary school-aged students on the school bus. Renfrew County Paramedics attended the scene and medically cleared all the occupants. The occupants of the minivan were not injured, and it was towed from the scene.

As a result of this incident the school bus driver, a 66-year-old from Pembroke, was charged with failing to yield to traffic on a through highway under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

Branden LANE Was Arrested

(DOURO-DUMMER TOWNSHIP, ON) – Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) have made an arrest in relation to a stolen trailer that was recovered while trying to be sold.

On Tuesday October 29, 2024, the Peterborough County OPP CSCU executed a warrant at a property in Douro-Dummer Township. Members of the unit had become aware of a trailer matching the description of one stolen earlier this summer from a business in Selwyn township, listed online for sale. Officers attended the location finding the trailer and confirming it to be the stolen trailer.

Branden LANE (age 34) of Douro-Dummer Twp., ON., was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

The accused was held for Bail to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough.
