(South Dundas) – On 08May14, at approximately 5:00pm, SD&G OPP officers had occasion to conduct a traffic stop on Highway 401, South Dundas Township.

The stop revealed that the 45yr old male driver (Louis LEBLOND of Saint-Andre-D’argenteuil, QC) was operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

He was arrested and faces charges of:

– Driving While Ability Impaired
– Driving with More than 80 mgs. of Alcohol in Blood

He is scheduled to appear 03Jun14 in Morrisburg court.

(South Glengarry) – On 09May14, at approximately 01:45am, SD&G OPP officers had occasion to conduct a traffic stop on Highway 401, South Glengarry Township.

The stop revealed that the 32yr old male driver (Matthew COLLINS of South Stormont) was operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

He was arrested and faces charges of:

– Driving While Ability Impaired
– Driving with more than 80 mgs. of Alcohol in Blood

He is scheduled to appear 04Jun14 in Alexandria court.

(SIMCOE, ON) In February of 2014, members from West Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Crime Prevention and Investigations commenced an investigation into allegations of fraud totalling over $23,000.

Investigation determined that between April 2013 and January 2014, 48 year old Heather WOOD, who is from Simcoe, defrauded an elderly couple out of the funds.

She will appear in a Provincial Court of Justice in Simcoe on June 3, 2014 to answer to the charge of fraud over $5000 under the Criminal Code of Canada.

The OPP recognizes this behaviour as elder abuse. Elder abuse is described as any action or inaction by any person who causes harm or threatens to cause harm to an older adult. A family member, a friend, a caregiver, a staff member at a care facility or anyone the older person relies on for their basic needs or services may cause the abuse.

Financial abuse could include: theft or misuse of money or property, dishonest use of money or assets, misuse of a Power of Attorney, fraud, extortion or forgery. OPP encourages anyone who knows of or is suspicious of an abusive situation to contact your local police authority, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

(CHATHAM-KENT, ON) On May 9, 2014, just after midnight, Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program at Highway 401 and Communication Road, when a Ford automobile entered and stopped for the officers.

While officers were speaking with the driver, 28 year old Kyle LAWSON, from Ridgetown, it was determined that he had been consuming alcoholic beverages.

Subsequent tests indicated that he was over the legal limit and will appear in a Chatham court on June 6, 2014, to answer to the following charges:

Driving With More Than 80 mgs of Alcohol in Blood, under the Criminal Code of Canada

Driving While Ability Impaired, under the Criminal Code of Canada

Chatham-Kent OPP would like to remind drivers that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. If you consume alcoholic beverages, plan for a safe ride home by using a designated driver, a taxi or public transit to ensure that you and others sharing the road arrive safely.

(HUNTSVILLE, ON) On Friday May 9, 2014 just before 9:00am Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was advised that the earlier missing person from Huntsville and District Memorial Hospital has walked away from the hospital once again.

The officers located the male on King William St in the town of Huntsville. The members that had assisted in the all night search were still in the area and attended once again. The forty-two year old male from North Bay was threatening to hurt himself and as a result the conducted energy weapon was utilized. He was immediately returned back to the Huntsville Hospital without injury.

(CHATHAM-KENT, ON) On May 8, 2014, just before 10:00 a.m., Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a collision involving two vehicles on Highway 40 at Countryview Line.

The collision occurred when a southbound International tractor trailer was in the process of turning eastbound from Highway 40 onto Countryview Line. As the tractor trailer was making its turn, a southbound Pontiac car traveling behind it, struck the trailer.

The male driver of the Pontiac, 53 year old Bernardo DYCK, from Dresden, has been charged with Careless Driving, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

No injuries were reported.

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – On Thursday May 8, 2014 Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received two complainants regarding credit card frauds.

An 80 year old female from Cramahe Township reported that she had received a telephone call from “Visa” asking for credit card information and the three digit number on the back. The victim was not willing to provide any information to the aggressive caller who then transferred her to a “supervisor”. The second caller “bullied” her into providing the information. The victim then contacted her bank and was advised this was a fraudulent call and cancelled her cards immediately. She was not out any funds as a result.

However, a 61 year old Brighton male was not as fortunate as he had been defrauded $7, 384 in two separate credit card transactions. The first fraud happened on May 1, 2014 where the caller had $595 US funds taken from his credit card and the second was for $6,789 US funds on May 8, 2014. The male advised OPP that when the caller contacted the victim, they already had his personal information and told him that they were calling from “Visa”. It is unknown how the caller had received the victim’s personal information at the time of the report to OPP. The male contacted the bank and was also advised of the fraudulent calls.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Center has been contacted in both incidents.

Both investigations continue.

OPP would like to REMIND people not to provide ANY personal information to callers over the phone. The bank that holds your credit card will already have your personal information when you apply for the account, which is usually done in person as account documents will require a signature. If you are unsure of the caller, just hang up. You are not obligated to provide anything to an unsolicited call.
