Animals in Distress / Cruelty

Occurrence #: N/A
Date: Friday, June 27, 2014 – 8:00pm
During a 24 hour period on June 27, 2014 Barrie Police responded to 8 different Animal in Distress calls regarding dogs being left unattended in vehicles.

With all incidents, police checked on the well being of the dogs and they were found to be safe. Owners were located and cautioned regarding the potential danger of leaving pets unattended in vehicles during the summer months.

Police would like to remind pet owners that if you are travelling with a pet, the best practice is to have someone stay with the vehicle, remove the pet from the vehicle and/or ensure proper ventilation (windows slightly lowered will not cool a vehicle down that is in the sun on a hot day).

The temperature in a vehicle, even in the shade with the windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level high enough to seriously harm or even kill your pet. A dog can be overwhelmed by heat in as little as 10 minutes.

If you see a dog in a car on a warm or humid day who you believe may be in trouble, ask stores to page customers. If all other options fail, contact police.
