(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to and investigated a number of traffic incidents over the weekend.
On December 27, 2024, shortly before 7:00 p.m., police responded to a single motor vehicle collision at a location off Huff Road in the Municipality of Brighton. Emergency Medical Services and the Municipality of Brighton Fire Department also responded to the incident where injuries were reported by the caller.
Officers arrived on scene and observed a passenger vehicle on its roof in an adjacent field. Following speaking to the driver, OPP entered into an impaired operation investigation and the driver was taken into custody.
The individual was also treated by medical personnel for non-life-altering injuries before being transported to a local hospital.
Tyler MOREWOOD (age 33), from Brighton, has been charged with:
– Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
– Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
In addition to a future court date, a further 90-day Administrative Driver Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impound was initiated as per statute.
On December 28, 2024, at approximately 7:10 p.m., OPP received a call regarding a single vehicle collision on Pentecostal Road in the Township of Hamilton. Police arrived and observed a pick-up truck in the ditch. An officer made an Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand which was complied with and the driver passed. Through further investigation, the individual was found to be prohibited from driving.
As a result, Jim WAYNOR (age 63) from London, has been charged with:
– Operation while prohibited
– Drive motor vehicle – improper licence
– Driving while under suspension – four counts
– Fail to apply for permit on becoming owner
– Fail to have insurance card
– Use plate not authorised for vehicle
The vehicle was impounded for 45 days, and the accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
Speed enforcement continued over the weekend with a total of 33 drivers issued tickets for offences in Northumberland County. In addition, two more drivers were charged with stunt driving.
On December 28, 2024, at approximately 12:10 p.m., an officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 401 eastbound in the Municipality of Port Hope when they observed a passenger vehicle travelling at a speed 157 Km/h in a posted 110 Km/h limit. The 59-year-old male driver from Courtice, was subsequently stopped and charged with:
– Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed
– Failure to surrender insurance card.
On December 29, 2024, shortly before 1:00 a.m., OPP observed a passenger vehicle travelling westbound on Highway 401 in the Township of Hamilton at a speed of 179 Km/h in a posted 100 Km/h limit. The vehicle was stopped and the 20-year-old male driver, from Mississauga, was charged with:
– Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed
Both drivers had their licence suspended for 30 days and vehicles impounded for 14 days.
Speeding continues to be a leading cause of collisions on our roads and trails. The OPP is urging motorists and operators to remember safety first. High speeds make it difficult to react to or negotiate hazards and obstacles.
The Northumberland OPP urges everyone to plan ahead and arrange for a safe ride home rather than drive while impaired. Call a friend, call a cab or call Operation Red Nose. Remember that any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.
