Unhoused Encampment “Dealt With” By OPP – Arson Charge Laid

(TOWN OF NEW TECUMSETH, ON)- The Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an arson incident at a homeless encampment in Alliston, resulting in its safe removal from private property. The decision to dismantle the encampment follows thorough assessments and consultations with local outreach teams, social service providers, and public health experts.

On June 17th, 2024, at approximately 7:30 pm, Nottawasaga OPP began an arson investigation at the homeless encampment located in Alliston near Young St. A dispute between multiple individuals resulted in a tent being set on fire and destroyed. No injuries have been reported. New Tecumseth Fire services attended the scene and safely extinguished the fire.

As a result, 32-year-old Rebecca Rogers from New Tecumseh has been arrested and charged with:

–      Arson – Damage to property

The accused has been held for a bail hearing.

In collaboration with various community partners, the OPP initiated the removal of the homeless encampment located on private property on June 18, 2024. This decision was made following thorough assessments and consultations with local outreach teams, social service providers, and public health experts. Comprehensive support services and networks were made available including temporary shelter options, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment referrals, and access to healthcare facilities.

The OPP, along with our community partners, aim to collectively ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved while providing access to essential services and resources.

The Nottawasaga OPP encourages community members to support these efforts by referring individuals in need to local service providers or by volunteering with organizations dedicated to addressing homelessness.

Todd ANSELL Was Arrested

(NORTHEASTERN MANITOULIN AND THE ISLANDS, ON) – The Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged one individual in connection with an ongoing arson investigation.

On April 6, 2024, shortly after 2:00 a.m., the Manitoulin OPP and Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Fire Department responded to a call of a house fire on Indian Mountain Road.

As a result of the investigation, Todd ANSELL, 37-years-old, from Sudbury has been charged with arson – damage to property.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on July 2, 2024.

The investigation remains ongoing with the assistance of the Manitoulin Crime Unit.

Arson & Assault – Sean NOLAN Arrested

(SUNDRIDGE, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an arson in the Village of Sundridge. 

On May 6, 2024, shortly after midnight the Almaguin Highlands OPP along with Parry Sound District Paramedic Service and the Sundridge Fire Department responded to a call of a house fire on John Street.

Investigation revealed that a person lit their residence on fire and barricaded themselves inside the residence. Out of concern for their safety, police entered the residence and located the person with a knife in hand. Consequently, the person was arrested safely by officers and transported to hospital for assessment.

As a result of the investigation, Sean NOLAN, 57-year-old from Sundridge was charged with:

  • Arson – Disregard for human life
  • Assault a peace officer with a weapon
  • Arson – Damage to property
  • Assault
  • Assault with intent to resist arrest

The accused was remanded into custody and awaits a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Parry Sound.

Jacob PEART – Arson, Break & Enter

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – One person has been arrested and charged in an arson investigation in Elliot Lake.

On March 6, 2024, shortly after 1:00 a.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Elliot Lake Fire Department responded to a suspicious fire on College Place in Elliot Lake where multiple camper trailers were destroyed.

As a result of the investigation, Jacob PEART, 20-years-old, from Elliot Lake has been charged with:

  • Arson – damage to property (3 counts)
  • Break, enter a place – commit indictable offence (2 counts)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court on March 8, 2024.

The East Algoma Crime Unit in conjunction with the North East Region OPP Forensic Identification Services are continuing the investigation.

Thomas MERRIMAN – Arson & Theft

(TOWNSHIP OF CRAMAHE, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have made an arrest in relation to a person wanted for separate incidents of arson and theft.

On October 31, 2023, Police responded to a call regarding an item of furniture that had been set on fire outside an address on King Street East in Colborne. The accused had left the area prior to police arrival.

On November 8, 2023, a complaint was made regarding theft from a commercial premises on King Street East in Colborne. The victim had discovered that the incident had occurred earlier in the day and reported to Police.

As a result of both investigations, an individual was identified and officers attended an address in Colborne where they believed the accused to be.

On February 20, 2024, Northumberland OPP made an arrest in relation to both incidents.

Thomas MERRIMAN, 29-years-old, of Colborne, was charged with the following:

–      Theft under $5,000 – shoplifting

–      Arson – damage to property

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg at a future date.
