12 & 13 Year Old Arrested After Traffic Stop

(WEST NIPISSING, ON) – Two young people have been arrested and charged after being stopped in a stolen vehicle.

On March 27, 2024, shortly before 2:30 a.m. members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Highway 17, West Nipissing.

Once the vehicle came to a stop, two young people fled into the bush, but were shortly located and arrested by police.

As a result of the investigation, a12-year-old person and 13-year-old person, both from North Bay, were charged with, possession property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Both accused were released and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in May 2024, in North Bay.

The OPP will not be releasing the name of the accused under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).

Another Drunk Driver Runs Red Light – Dwayne YOUNG Arrested

(WEST NIPISSING, ON) – Police charged the driver for impaired driving, after the vehicle failed to stop for a red light.

On March 24, 2024, shortly after 12:00 a.m., members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Front Street, West Nipissing.

The driver failed to stop for a red light and was stopped by police. The driver was arrested for impaired driving, then transported to the Greater Sudbury Police Service for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Dwayne YOUNG, 52 years-of-age, from West Nipissing, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Red light – fail to stop

The accused was release and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on May 2, 2024, in North Bay.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The OPP would like to remind the public that if you see a possible impaired driver on our roadways, waterways, or trails, please “Make the Call,” and dial 9-1-1 as impaired driving never ends well, please plan a way to get home safely.

Assault With Weapon & Threats – Steven DENIS

(WEST NIPISSINGON) – Police arrested and charged one person after a report of a road rage incident.

On March 14, 2024, shortly before 12:30 p.m., Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a weapon complaint on Dutrisac Road, West Nipissing.

It was reported that two vehicles had been involved in a road rage incident on Highway 17 and pulled onto a side road to confront each other. One driver brandished a knife, while uttering a threat to harm the other driver.

As a result of the investigation, Steven DENIS, 32-years-old, from North Bay, was arrested and charged with, assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on April 4, 2024.

Murder – Victim & Accused Names Released

(WEST NIPISSING, ON) – Police have identified the victim and charged one person after a shooting incident at a residence in West Nipissing.

On March 13, 2024, shortly after 5:00 p.m., members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Bradley Street.

The deceased has been identified as Joseph GENEREUX, 53 years-old, from West Nipissing.

As a result of the investigation, Marc LARABIE, 48 years-old, from West Nipissing has been charged with:

·      Second degree murder, contrary to section 235 of the Criminal Code (CC)

·      Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC

·      Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm, contrary to section 92(1) of the CC

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Superior Court of Justice in North Bay on April 12, 2024.

Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and there is no immediate threat to public safety.

The public can continue to expect a large police presence in the area. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

The investigation is being conducted by the Nipissing West OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance of the OPP Forensic Identification Services, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Melisa SIMON-CARROLL – Assault With Weapon

(WEST NIPISSINGON) – Police charged one person after a report of a disturbance at a local arena.

On March 2, 2024, shortly before 1:30 p.m., Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance at a local arena on O’Hara Street, West Nipissing.

It was reported that after an earlier hockey game on that same day, a parent from an opposing team had assaulted another parent with a solid object in their hand. Minor injuries were reported by the victim.

As a result of the investigation, Melisa SIMON-CARROLL, 40-years-old, from Markstay-Warren, was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Mischief – destroys or damages property

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on April 4, 2024.
