On Sunday, December 8th, 2024, members of the Hanover Police while on patrol observed a suspicious male around 10th Avenue. On approach police recognized the 35-year-old man who was bound by court conditions not to be in the Town of Hanover. On seeing police, the man attempted to flee but was apprehended. Hanover Police have charged the man under the Criminal Code with multiple charges of Fail to Comply and Resist Arrest. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Walkerton.
On Friday, December 6th, 2024, Hanover Police responded to a theft complaint from a local business. Police viewed video surveillance which showed a well-known 40-year-old Hanover man taking product and making no attempt to pay. Police later located and arrested the man charging him under the Criminal Code with Theft and Possession of Stolen Property. He was given a court date in Walkerton and released from custody.
On Sunday, December 8th, 2024, police while dealing with another matter were approached by two males on foot. The males requested a ride home from police and were obviously under the influence of alcohol. Police provided advice to call a local taxi. One male became confrontational and refused to continue on his way. He was arrested for Public Intoxication and charged under the Liquor Licence Control Act. He was held in custody until sober and issued a Provincial Offence Notice.
On Sunday, December 1st, 2024, Hanover Police responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of 14th Street. Through investigation police formed grounds to believe that a 23-year-old female had assaulted another person. The victim did not require medical attention. The female was later released from police custody but returned to the victim’s residence and assaulted them again. This time the female was arrested and held for a bail hearing in Walkerton. Her charges include Assault X2, Mischief and Fail to Comply. All charges were under the Criminal Code.
Hanover Police continue to investigate a fail to remain motor vehicle collision from Friday, November 29th, 2024. A 2016 Jeep Cherokee was struck while parked on 12th Avenue in Hanover. On Saturday, November 30th, 2024, members of the Hanover Police while on patrol observed a vehicle fail to stop at the intersection of 12th Street and 10th Avenue. The vehicle was stopped, and the driver’s license was determined to be suspended under the Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code. Hanover Police charged a 65-year-old Hanover man under the Criminal Code with Prohibited Operation of a Motor Vehicle. He was further charged under the Highway Traffic Act. He was later released with an upcoming court date in Walkerton.
On Friday, December 6th, 2024, Hanover Police received a report of a possible impaired driver. Police located the vehicle on 10th Street and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was subsequently arrested and provided samples of her breath which were over the legal limit of alcohol. Police have charged a 29-year-old Ayton woman under the Criminal Code with Impaired Driving and Over 80mgs of Alcohol. Her license has been suspended for 90-days and her vehicle impounded. She was released with an upcoming court date in Walkerton.
Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigations Unit are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in the City of Markham
On Thursday, December 19, 2024, shortly after 7 a.m., officers responded to a report of a collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Markham Road and Golden Avenue.
When officers arrived, a 53-year-old man was located and found to have sustained severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle which remained at the scene.
The man was taken to a local hospital but was later airlifted to a nearby trauma centre. On Friday, December 20, 2024, the man succumbed to his injuries.
No charges have been laid at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
Investigators are appealing to any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, and to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the area at the time of the collision, to please come forward.

York Regional Police Criminal Investigations Bureau investigators have laid charges against a male youth following a threats investigation.
On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, officers attended a secondary school after the youth threatened to bring a firearm and cause harm at the school.
Through investigation, a search warrant was conducted at the youth’s residence and a number of firearms were seized.
The youth has since been charged with Uttering Threats and Possession of a Restricted Firearm without a Licence.
Youth Engagement Officers, under the York Regional Police Community Services Bureau, were engaged at the onset of the investigation. A Violent Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) was conducted by Youth Engagement Officers, certified Board staff and community partners. This occurred once the student was removed from the school setting and no longer posed a threat.
The goal of a VTRA is to determine how to best support a student and decrease the likelihood of harm to themselves or others. In conjunction with a VTRA, a safety plan is created for the victim or potential victim.
York Regional Police remains committed to working collaboratively with the York Region school boards to ensure the safety of students and the broader community of York Region.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional have charged a male in connection to multiple commercial break-and-enters.
Between December 9 and 10, 2024, a male broke into four businesses in Waterloo Region, one on Sydney Street in Kitchener and three in Cambridge, on Eagle Street, Hespeler Road and Holiday Inn Drive.
In each of the break-ins, a rock was used to smash a glass door and gain entry, and property and cash were stolen.
WRPS’ Break, Enter, and Vehicle Theft Team subsequently identified the male and determined he had been arrested in Guelph on December 11, 2024, after breaking into a business.
As a result of the investigation, Waterloo Regional Police have charged a 37-year-old male with four counts of break and enter – commit theft.

A male is in custody after he made threats with a shotgun outside a residence in Oshawa.
On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at approximately 12:50 p.m., members of Central West Division responded to an armed person call in the area of Thornton Road North and Winchester Road West. A male made threats with a shotgun toward three other males who attended the property to enforce an eviction. The three victims exited the property and contacted police.
Officers arrived on scene and located the suspect barricaded inside of his residence. Police set up containment and closed the roadways as they negotiated with the male. After lengthy negotiations, the suspect safely surrendered himself to police and was taken into custody without incident. A shotgun, rifle, and ammunition were seized following a search of the residence.
The victims did not sustain any physical injuries.
Steven Rejean COTE, age 64 of Whitby is charged with: Possess Firearm – No licence x9, Careless Use of a Firearm x2, Possession of a Firearm with Ammunition x2, Possession of a Prohibited Device x2, Utter Threats, and Assault with a Weapon.
He was held for a bail hearing.

A suspect is being sought after shots were fired into a residence in Whitby.
On Sunday December 22, 2024, at approximately 10:35 p.m., members of Central West Division responded for gun shots reported in the area of Rivers Edge Place and Taunton Road East. A male wearing dark clothing was seen fleeing the area in a white Mercedes SUV. Officers arrived on scene and located a residence with several bullet holes. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the shooting, and no injuries have been reported to police.

A 29-year-old male remains in life-threatening condition after a single-vehicle collision in Clarington.
On Saturday, December 21, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., members from East Division were called to Station Street in Orono for a single-vehicle collision. A 29-year-old male from Orono had been operating an off-road vehicle (ATV) when he lost control and was ejected from the vehicle.
As a result of the collision, the male suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital by paramedics. The male what then transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre by ORNGE Air where he remains with life-threatening injuries.
Members of the DRPS – Collision Investigation Unit, attended the scene and investigated the circumstances of the incident. The area of the roadway was closed for several hours while evidence was collected. This collision is still under investigation.

DRPS completed its fifth week of the 2024 Festive RIDE program, stopping more than 2,300 vehicles and charging 21 drivers with impaired driving offences. More than 200 drivers were given roadside breath tests.

This week the RIDE team worked in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Durham, as well as DRPS auxiliary constables. DRPS would like to thank all of the citizens who called 911 to report suspected impaired drivers. Many of these calls led to arrests and removed impaired drivers from our roads. This is a prime example of how it takes the entire community working together to improve the safety of our roadways. If you see something, say something. Impaired driving is an emergency, call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.
During the first five weeks, the 2024 Festive RIDE Team has arrested and charged 86 drivers for impaired related driving offences. That is only one less than the entire six-week campaign in 2023. With still a week to go, including New Year’s Eve, it looks like we will see an increase over last year. This is unacceptable. We urge drivers to make the right choice, plan ahead, use alternative transportation or have a designated driver.
A designated driver is someone who should abstain completely from alcohol or drug consumption before driving. This week, one motorist learned this the hard way, receiving a 90 Day licence suspension and a court date, after deciding they would be the designated driver because they drank less than their passenger.

Note: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a criminal impaired driving offence will have their driver’s licence suspended for ninety days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.
A Guelph man has been arrested in connection with two recent incidents in which store employees were threatened and assaulted.
Approximately 6 p.m. Saturday, police were called to a business near Speedvale Avenue East and Stevenson Street North. A male had left the business without paying for merchandise and was confronted outside by an employee and a customer, who began to record the male so he could be identified. The suspect slapped the customer’s hand, causing him to drop his phone.
Police arrived a few minutes later and located all parties. A 23-year-old Guelph man was arrested for theft under $5,000 and assault.
Investigation revealed the male was wanted for two incidents last week during which employees of stores downtown and on Stone Road West were threatened and assaulted. He was further charged with an additional three counts of assault and five counts of uttering threats. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court January 28.
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after $800 in tools were stolen from a business under construction.
Approximately 1:45 p.m. Friday, police were called to a business near York Road and Kingsmill Avenue. A business under renovation had been entered overnight and tools including drills and a propane heater were stolen. The front door had been pried open causing a glass pane above the door to crack.

Two Guelph men were arrested for impaired driving in Guelph over the weekend, including one stopped at a RIDE spot check.
Saturday evening, just after 9 p.m., officers were running a RIDE check on Gordon Street just south of Wellington Street. Upon speaking to one driver, officers suspected he had been drinking and asked him to provide a breath sample, resulting in a fail.
He was arrested and transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 43-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.
Approximately 1:35 a.m. Sunday, an officer patrolling near Woodlawn Road and Woolwich Street observed a vehicle being driven erratically and pulled it over. The officer detected a strong odour of alcohol and the driver was showing signs of impairment.
The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 24-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. Both drivers had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. Both were released with upcoming court dates.
