(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind our residents that crime prevention is a shared responsibility and we all have a role to play. Recently, Huron County OPP along with other detachments in West Region have investigated a number of break, enter and thefts including day-time break and enters.

Two day-time break, enter and thefts occurred in Goderich during the last week of May wherein the thief forced entry into both residences and escaped with jewellery and cash. Huron County OPP continues to investigate these crimes and encourages members of the public to contact the Huron County OPP Detachment at (519) 524-8314 with any information you may have about these crimes. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.

The best way to deal with crime and victimization is to stop crime before it occurs. All communities are safer when citizens work together to build safe and healthy neighbourhoods. Public safety and crime prevention is a shared responsibility, in which both citizens and the police have important roles. Collectively, if we all take pro-active steps we can reduce crime and increase the overall safety of our communities in Huron County.

One of the most useful tools for crime prevention is to call police if you see suspicious activity. You are not bothering police with your call, conversely, officers highly recommend and encourage you to make the call if you see suspicious activity. When in doubt, please call police. For suspicious activity and crimes in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately and continually update police with a description of the events that are unfolding.

(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) On Tuesday June 10, 2014, Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were called to a residence on Boyne Ave. South in Listowel where the homeowner discovered a theft from his attached garage.

Investigation revealed that sometime between 9:30 p.m. Monday June 9th and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday June 10th 2014, five golf clubs were removed from a golf bag located in the garage. The overhead garage door of the garage had accidentally been left open during the night.

– Taylor Made R7 3 Wood

– Taylor Made R7 5 Wood

– Odyssey White Ice Putter

While officers were investigating this theft, they spoke with a neighbour living down the street of the victim. The neighbour advised that his unlocked garage had also been entered sometime between June 7th and June 9th, and two bicycles were stolen. He had not bothered to report this break-in to police. As the neighbour provided the description of the stolen bicycles to police, the officers immediately recognized one of the described bikes as one that was recovered in town on June 9th.

These two incidences reiterate the need to lock our homes and garages, and to immediately report criminal activity to police. (TOWNSHIP OF PERTH SOUTH, ON) On Sunday June 08, 2014, shortly after 8 a.m. a Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was driving southbound on Perth Road 130 south of Sebringville when a fast moving north bound minivan was observed.

The officer utilized police radar and determined that the minivan was travelling at 139 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The vehicle was pulled over and the 18 year old female driver, a Stratford resident was issued a summons for the offence of “race a motor vehicle”.

On Tuesday June 10, 2014, around 3:30 a.m. a Volkswagen was observed travelling south bound on Hwy 7 near Perth Line 20 at a high rate of speed. A Perth County OPP officer locked the vehicle’s speed in on radar at 134 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone.

The 21 year old male driver, a Zorra Twp resident was issued a summons for “race a motor vehicle”.

Both drivers had their driver’s licences suspended and their vehicles impounded for seven days. The will both be appearing at the Stratford Court of Justice on June 24, 2014, to answer to their charge.

(ST.MARYS, ON) The Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating three residential day-time break-in’s that occurred on Friday June 06, 2014, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. In all three cases the home owners were out for the day while the entries occurred. Two of the homes are on James St. North with the third being located on Emily St. in St.Marys.

Investigation revealed that all three homes had been entered by means of unlocked garage and patio doors. Once inside the garages and covered patios, the culprit(s) were then able to force their way into the homes without being observed. The homes were searched and in all three instances cash and jewellery was taken. From one of the homes a small camera and some personal documents were also removed.

The stolen items are small but valuable and can easily be carried away without attracting too much attention to the culprit(s).
