(ESSA TOWNSHIP, ON) – Officers from the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) wish to inform the public of safety tips to prevent encounters with bears after they have received information about sightings in the area.
Last night, just after 9:00PM, a full size grown bear was observed in the area of Gold Park Gate and the 5th Line of Essa Township. This bear appeared to have a slight limp and may have an injured front leg. Other sightings have also occurred in this area and involve 2 cubs. It is possible that this bear is trying to locate a source of food for her cubs and herself.
Residents are reminded to practice these safety tips to prevent bears from wandering onto their property:
Putting garbage out only on the morning of collection.
Storing garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids.
Put away bird feeders and offer natural alternatives like flowers, nesting boxes and fresh water.
Clean outdoor grills after each use, including the grease trap underneath.
If you encounter a bear and your personal safety is threatened, you are urged to call the OPP immediately by dialling 911.
To report bear sightings (non urgent), residents can contact 1-866-514-2327, which is the Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Reporting Line.
As well, for further safety tips and information, residents can visit the Ministry of Natural Resources website at www.mnr.gov.on.ca and query bear wise.
