Brock SMITH – Drunk Driving

(KENORA, ON) On May 31, 2014 just before 2:00 am, members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Anderson Road, Kenora Township. Police determined the male driver had been consuming alcohol and placed him under arrest. He was transported to the Kenora OPP detachment for further tests.

As a result of this investigation, Brock SMITH, age 19 of Kenora has been charged with Drive with More than .80 mgs of alcohol in 100 ml of blood and Driving While Ability Impaired contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

He is to appear in Kenora court on July 3, 2014 to answer to the charge.

BOAT STOLEN

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON.) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating the theft of a motor boat.

On June 1, 2014 the OPP attended a residence on Lawrence Street in the former Emily Township in response to the theft of a boat from the waterway of the residence.

Stolen was a 1974 Springbok, aluminum boat with a 15HP Evinrude motor.

BREAK AND ENTER

(KENORA, ON) Members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating another break and enter that occurred on May 31, 2014.

On Saturday May 31, 2014 at 2:38 am police received a report that an unknown suspect had entered a residence in the Rabbit Lake area of Kenora. Once again, an occupant of the residence woke up and saw the suspect in the residence. The suspect fled the scene upon waking the occupant.

There is no description of the suspect, but the circumstances are very similar to two break and enters that occurred in the last two weeks. A facial approximation of that suspect has already been released.

The OPP once again remind the public to be aware of their personal safety at all times. Lock your doors, vehicles and outbuildings. For tips on safety for you and your home see opp.ca.

Robert WEST – Drunk Driving

(South Glengarry) – On May 30th, 2014 at approximately 8:15pm, an SD&G OPP officer had the occasion to conduct a traffic stop on County Road 34, South Glengarry Township. A check of the male driver indicated he was under the influence of alcohol.

Robert WEST (68) of South Stormont Township was arrested and is charged with;

– Driving While Ability Impaired
– Driving with More than 80 milligrams of Alcohol in Blood
– Driving while Under Suspension (Highway Traffic Act)

He was released and scheduled to appear in Alexandria court on June 17th, 2014.

DRUG OFFENCES

(South Glengarry) – On May 31st, 2014 at approximately 7:30pm, an SD&G OPP officer had the occasion to stop a vehicle on County Road 2, South Glengarry Township. The stop resulted in a small quantity of suspected marihuana seized from within the vehicle.

The driver, Patricia DUNKLEY (42) of South Glengarry Township and passenger Paul ST-LOUIS (42) of Cornwall were both arrested and each charged with;

– Possession of a Controlled Substance

They were released and scheduled to appear in Alexandria court on July 9th, 2014.

(North Stormont) – On June 1st, 2014 at approximately 12:32am, SD&G OPP officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the Village of Finch, North Stormont Township. The noted vehicle was intercepted on County Road 12. The stop resulted in a small quantity of suspected cocaine and methamphetamine seized from within the vehicle.

The male driver, Kane HANNA (18) of North Stormont was arrested and is charged with;

– Possession of a Controlled Substance (2 counts)

He was released and scheduled to appear in Cornwall court on June 26th, 2014.

THEFTS FROM MOTOR VEHICLES

(South Stormont) – Overnight (29-30May14) a vehicle was entered while parked at a residential property on Mill Street in the Village of Newington, South Stormont Township. Inside, a TomTom GPS and IPhone charger (3) were taken. Furthermore, a vehicle was entered while parked at a residential property on Fairgrounds Drive. Assorted Dewalt power tools (drill & battery) and hand tools were taken. An investigation continues.

(North Glengarry) – On May 30th, 2014 between 8:45-10:00pm, a vehicle was entered while parked at a business property on Main Street north in the Town of Alexandria. Inside a computer tablet, personal documents and a quantity of cash (coins) were taken. An investigation continues.

OPP INVESTIGATING THEFT

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON.) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating the theft of copper wire from a local business.

On May 31, 2014 the OPP attended the LaFarge site on Kawartha Lakes Road 20 in the former Manvers Township, in response to a break, enter and theft of copper wire. The value of the copper wire stolen is estimated at $50 000.

The Forensic Identification Unit attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

THEFT OF CHAINSAWS

(KEARNEY, ON) On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at approximately 3:40 p.m., the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to investigate the theft of 2 chainsaws.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2014 between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., unknown person(s) entered the Highway 518 East location and stole the saws. The first chainsaw is described as a Stihl MS 461 and the second one is a Stihl MS 460 Magnum. The chainsaws are valued at approximately $1000.

PLANE CRASH AT THE SOUTH RIVER/SUNDRIDGE AIRPORT

(JOLY TOWNSHIP) The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended a plane crash at the South River/Sundridge District Airport that sent the pilot to hospital.

On Saturday, May 31, 2014 at approximately 11:30 a.m., the pilot while operating his white Piper hit a tree on the runway while attempting to land his plane. David LANE, 63 was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There were no passengers in the plane. The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

THEFT OF HOMEMADE ATV PLOW AND TRAILER

(STRONG TWP, ON) The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating the theft of a home-made All-terrain-vehicle (ATV) plow and trailer. Sometime between Saturday May 31, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. and June 1, 2014 unknown person(s) entered the South Horn Lake Road property and stole the trailer and plow.

The plow is described as 3.5 feet long and red in colour. The trailer is described as green with 14 inch duster winter tires on chrome rims. The value of the missing items is approximately $1000.

BEAR SIGHTINGS IN THE AREA

(ESSA TOWNSHIP, ON) – Officers from the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) wish to inform the public of safety tips to prevent encounters with bears after they have received information about sightings in the area.

Last night, just after 9:00PM, a full size grown bear was observed in the area of Gold Park Gate and the 5th Line of Essa Township. This bear appeared to have a slight limp and may have an injured front leg. Other sightings have also occurred in this area and involve 2 cubs. It is possible that this bear is trying to locate a source of food for her cubs and herself.

Residents are reminded to practice these safety tips to prevent bears from wandering onto their property:

Putting garbage out only on the morning of collection.
Storing garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids.
Put away bird feeders and offer natural alternatives like flowers, nesting boxes and fresh water.
Clean outdoor grills after each use, including the grease trap underneath.

If you encounter a bear and your personal safety is threatened, you are urged to call the OPP immediately by dialling 911.

To report bear sightings (non urgent), residents can contact 1-866-514-2327, which is the Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Reporting Line.

DRUG WARRANT EXECUTED IN NORWICH TOWNSHIP

(NORWICH TOWNSHIP, ON.) – Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau – Central Drug Enforcement Unit and Community Drug Action Team (CDAT) with the assistance of the Oxford County OPP and OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) members, conducted a search warrant at a residence on Cedar Line on May 31, 2014 in Norwich Township.

The warrant led to the seizure of 87.3 grams of Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDVP- commonly referred to as “Bath Salts”), 37 grams of Cannabis Marihuana Bud, 21 Cannabis Marihuana Plants and approximately $2,500 in cash. Also seized were three firearms, ammunition and one vehicle.

Police arrested and charged two males as a result of this investigation.

Charged with the following is, 33 year old Justin ELSBRIE and 27 year old Nathan TAYLOR, both of Norwich Township:

Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Other Drug (MDPV)
Possession of a Schedule II substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cannabis Marihuana
Produce a Schedule II substance – Cannabis Marihuana
Import a Schedule I substance – Other Drug (MDPV)
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

Both were held for bail hearings, and are scheduled to appear in Woodstock Court on the June 2, 2014.

CHARGE LAID UNDER STUNT DRIVING LEGISLATION

(CHATHAM-KENT, ON) On May 31, 2014, a Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was conducting RADAR enforcement on Highway 401 near Charing Cross Road.

Just before 5:00 p.m., the officer observed a westbound Chevrolet Malibu that appeared to be exceeding the posted speed limit of 100 km/hr. The RADAR registered a speed of 174 km/hr.

Shaun SLOAN, age 28, from Romeoville, IL, has been charged with Race A Motor Vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The driver’s licence has been suspended and the vehicle impounded for a period of seven days, as per statute.

RECOVERED ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – On Thursday April 24, 2014 a Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer on general patrol stopped the driver of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in Cramahe Township for not wearing a helmet. An investigation into the ownership of the ATV has resulted in charges being laid by OPP.

The 32 year old male driver was stopped without a helmet on a 2005 Yamaha Grizzly 660 ATV on County Road 21 near Cowie Road in Cramahe Township at approximately 5:43pm on April 2014. He was unable to produce valid ownership or insurance for the machine which resulted in a follow-up investigation by Northumberland OPP’s Street Response Team (SRT).

As a result of this follow-up investigation, it was determined that the Yamaha was reported to Durham Regional Police as stolen from the Whitby area in 2005.

Northumberland OPP’s SRT members concluded their investigation on Wednesday May 28, 2014 and have arrested and charged Troy SAUNDERS, 42 from Belleville, Ontario with one count each of trafficking in stolen goods and possession of property obtained by crime under the Criminal Code.

The accused was released on a promise to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton, Ontario on Wednesday June 25, 2014.

Carol BATEMAN – Drunk Driving

(HALIBURTON, ON) – On Friday May 30, 2014 at 9:45 pm Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haliburton Highlands Detachment responded to a single motor vehicle rollover on Haliburton Lake Road in the Municipality of Dysart et al. A lone female occupant was operating her 2006 Buick when she left the roadway and entered the ditch and the vehicle rolled over. It was determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol and she was arrested at the scene and transported to the OPP detachment for breath tests.

As a result, Carol BATEMAN age 53 from Eagle Lake Ontario has been charged with the following:

Driving with Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol
Impaired Driving

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Minden on July 02, 2014.
