SPEEDING LEADS TO CRIMINAL CHARGES

(HUNTSVILLE, ON) On Saturday July 7, 2014 just after 10:30pm Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members were patrolling on Highway #11 in the town of Huntsville when they observed a Porsche traveling at a high rate of speed in the south bound lanes.

Officers managed to get the vehicle stopped near Allensville Rd on Highway #11 and found that the driver had been drinking. David ARCHER (58yrs) of Toronto was arrested and eventually charged with Impaired Driving and having more than 80mgs of alcohol per 100mltrs of blood, along with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle under the Criminal Code of Canada. He faces further charges of racing a Motor Vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act. He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Huntsville on July 9, 2014 to answer to his charges.

FOUR COLLISIONS INVOLVING MOOSE INVESTIGATED

(KIRKLAND LAKE, ON.) – Members of the Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated four motor vehicle collisions involving moose being struck in a twenty-four hour period on the weekend. The locations of the collisions included one on Highway 11 in Marquis Township and three on Highway 66 east of Kirkland Lake in Lebel, Gauthier and McGarry Townships. No involved persons were injured in these collisions which occurred during the late evening hours on June 7 and 8, 2014. These four collisions took place at night when it was dark but drivers are advised that moose are active at any time during the day.

Police remind drivers that the moose are coming out to the shoulders and ditches to get relief from the black fly and mosquito population. Moose seek the open spaces of the highway so the breeze will keep the flies away. They also come to the ditches to get the salty water that results from winter road maintenance.

For the remainder of the spring and into the summer be attentive and watch both ahead and to the sides while driving. Moose are unpredictable and will run into the path of an approaching vehicle. If you see a moose, slow down, proceed with caution and be prepared to possibly stop.

“During this period of time, reduce your speed and drive defensively. Remember, many moose collisions have caused serious personal injuries or death. Help preserve our public’s safety as well as conserving our natural resources. They don’t know any better, we do”, states Staff/Sgt Rick Witty Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police Detachment Commander.

TRESPASSERS IGNORING SAFETY ISSUES AT QUARRY

(Township of Lanark Highlands, ON) – Officers from the Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged 17 people in a response to continuous incidents of trespass at the Tatlock Quarry, in the Township of Lanark Highlands.

People are trespassing at the quarry to swim and numbers have increased due to use of social media.

The OPP stress that while charges were laid under the Provincial Trespass to Property Act because people were entering onto, and using, private property without authority or permission, it is simply not safe to be in the excavation area and the waters.

OPP INVESTIGATING SUSPICIOUS FIRES

(Asphodel Norwood Township, ON) – On Sunday June 8, members of the Peterborough County OPP were called to investigate a report of two separate intentional fires in Asphodel Norwood.

At approximately 5:13 p.m. officers and members of the Asphodel Norwood Fire Department were called to a large grass fire on Ridge Street. The attending Fire personal were able to control and extinguish the grass fire which appeared to have been purposefully set.

Officers at the same time were called to a private residence on Mills Street where unknown suspects had burned a Political sign that had been on the front yard of the home owner.

No suspects have been identified in either incident however both are under investigation at this time.

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION LEADS TO DOUBLE IMPAIRED CHARGES

(LAKE OF BAYS, ON) On Saturday June 7, 2014 just after 7:00pm Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Fox Point Rd in Lake of Bays Twp. Information was that a Dodge Dakota was traveling toward Hwy #35 and lost control on a curve putting the pickup truck into the bushes, taking out trees along the way.

Investigation found that the driver had been drinking at the time of the crash. Further investigation found that the driver at the time of the crash was not the driver when they left a cottage in the area, a short time earlier.

As a result both Philip KISS (21yrs) of Burlington, Ontario and Cooper RUSH (20yrs) of Oakville, Ontario were both charged with Impaired Driving and having more than 80mgs of alcohol per 100mtrs of blood. They will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Huntsville on July 16, 2014 to answer to their charges.

Franz Giesbrecht MARTENS – Drunk Driving

(LEAMINGTON, ON) -The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Leamington arrested another impaired driver this past weekend.

On Sunday, June 8, 2014 at approximately 8:00 p.m. officers received a call from a concerned motorist regarding the erratic driving of a grey Ford travelling on Seacliff Drive in Leamington.

Officers located the vehicle and spoke to the driver of the vehicle who exhibited signs of impairment. He was arrested at the scene.

Franz Giesbrecht MARTENS, age 18 of Leamington, has been charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Exceed 80 milligrams of Blood Alcohol Content. He will appear in a Leamington court on July 3, 2014.

MALE CHARGED IN DOMESTIC INCIDENT

(Cavan Monaghan Township, ON) – On Friday June 6, at approximately 8:00 p.m.., members of the Peterborough County OPP were called to investigate a report of a domestic incident from a residence that occurred on Cedar Valley Road.

Officers attended learned that a 24 year old male and a 25 year old female had been involved in a domestic relationship for a period of time. The female and the male had become involved in an argument that quickly became assaultive.

An investigation was conducted and as a result a 24 year old Peterborough male has been charged with Assault and Mischief.

The male has been held for a Bail Hearing scheduled for Monday June 9, in Peterborough Provincial Courts.

The identities of the parties involved are being withheld due to the nature of the offence.

CIGARETTES STOLEN IN BREAK AND ENTER

(Selwyn Township, ON) – On Saturday June 7, Officers from the Peterborough County OPP were called to investigate a report of a break and enter that occurred over night at a Commercial Business on Ennis Road.

At some time in the evening of June 6 and the early hours of June 7, 2014, unknown suspects gained entry to Sullivan’s General Store on Ennis Road. The suspects gained entry by damaging the front door and once inside sole a large quantity of cigarettes then fled the scene.

Members of the Forensic Identification Unit were called to assist in an examination of the scene.

Darren SHAUGHNESSY – Drunk Driving

(Selwyn Township, ON) – On June 7, 2014, at approximately 3:19 a.m. officers from the Peterborough County OPP had occasion to investigate an erratic driver on Hilliard Street.

Officers patrolling the area stopped a motor vehicle being operated on Hilliard Street.

As a result of the investigation a 20 year old male Darren SHAUGHNESSY of Douro Dummer was arrested and charged with Having Over 80mgs of Alcohol in his Blood.

GJINI was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Peterborough Provincial Courts on July 24, 2014

Renfrew OPP Investigate Serious Collision

(RENFREW, ON) – The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision on Monday June 9th just after 6am in Renfrew. The collision occurred on Highway 17 just east of O’Brien Road. The highway is expected to be closed for most of the day. A detour has been set up at Gillian Road and O’Brien Road on Highway 17.

A west bound tractor trailer and an east bound SUV collided and the collision is under investigation. The driver of the tractor trailer and the driver of the SUV were the sole occupants of the vehicles and they have both suffered serious injuries and have been airlifted to the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

DAMAGE DONE AROUND TOWN THIS PAST WEEKEND

(HUNTSVILLE, ON) The town of Huntsville clock was finally up and running and construction moved away the clock was damaged this past weekend.

On Sunday June 8, 2014 the Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was notified by the town staff that the town clock had been damaged. Sometime over night unknown culprits smashed the clock that faces to the north/west side of the town hall. The town staff went up to cover the clock to protect it from any possible rain damage and observed what appeared to be pellet marks around the clock area.

During the night hours Huntsville OPP also responded to damage downtown where benches were turned over and fire hydrants were set off. Other damage was reported in other areas of the town of Huntsville included street signs bent over and 911 signs bent.

Huntsville OPP continues to investigate the damage done and asks that anyone with any information is asked to contact Huntsville OPP or Crime Stoppers.

OPP INVESTIGATE FATAL MOTORCYCLE COLLISION

(Oro-Medonte, ON) – Barrie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 400 southbound, south of Vasey Road, Oro-Medonte Twp.

On Saturday June 7th at 4:07 pm members of the Barrie OPP, County of Simcoe Paramedic Services (EMS), and Oro-Medonte Fire Department (OMFD) responded to a single vehicle collision, involving a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Preliminary investigation reveals that the vehicle entered the grassy portion of the center median.

The driver, Serafin DASILVA (53yrs) of Vaughan, Ontario, was confirmed deceased at the scene. OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator (TTCI) team members are assisting with the investigation.

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 10

(CALEDON, ON) – On June 5, 2014 at approximately 1:15 pm, officers from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with Caledon Emergency Services personnel responded to a head-on collision on Highway 10 north of Beech Grove Side Road. The investigation had revealed that a gray Mazda was travelling northbound and a white GMC pick-up was travelling southbound. For some unknown reason, one of the two vehicles crossed over the centre line. As a result of the impact, the Mazda became engulfed in flames. Both drivers of the vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.

The OPP confirm that the driver of the gray Mazda has been identified as William Taylor, 51, of Orangeville.

Thomas MCKENNA – Drunk Driving

(Oro-Medonte, ON) – On Friday June 6th, 2014 at 5:56 pm, an employee from a restaurant located in Shanty Bay contacted the Barrie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to report a possible impaired driver. The complainant reported that a male driver placed an order in the restaurant’s drive-thru lane and when the male drove up to the window and provided payment, they observed open liquor. Officers attended the restaurant and through their investigation determined the driver was impaired by alcohol.

33-year old Thomas MCKENNA of London was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired & Drive Motor Vehicle Over 80 milligrams of alcohol.

His licence was suspended for a period of 90 days under the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) program and his motor vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

The accused will be making his first appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on June 23, 2014.

Peter GRABER – Drunk Driving

Officers from the Barrie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested and charged a motorist with drinking and driving offences after receiving a traffic complaint Friday evening.

A member of the public reported a Chevy half ton pickup truck traveling northbound on highway 11 in Oro-Medonte Twp. The vehicle was reported to be weaving all over the road. Officers from the Barrie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) located the vehicle at a drive thru in Orillia.

38-year old Peter GRABER of Barrie was charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Drive Motor Vehicle Over 80 milligrams of alcohol.

His licence was suspended for a period of 90 days under the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) program and his motor vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

The accused will be making his first appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on July 21st, 2014.
