Arrest after four strangers attacked

A Guelph man faces four counts of assault with a weapon after four strangers were attacked in separate incidents Friday.

Just before 11 a.m. the subject was outside a business on Baker Street when he struck another male in the face with a rod, causing an injury. Staff from the business intervened and tried to deescalate the man, but he struck a second victim in the face with the rod.

The subject fled the area, but a short time later was involved in an altercation with another passerby, raising his guitar over his head in a threatening manner.

Approximately an hour later police were called to a business on Silvercreek Parkway North. A man was shopping in the store when he was approached by another man, who briefly spoke to him and then repeatedly swung a rod at his head. The victim was able to duck and was instead struck on the shoulder and forearm, causing an injury.

A 46-year-old Guelph man was arrested for four counts of assault with a weapon and one count of assault causing bodily harm. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.

Multiple vehicle thefts and attempts

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after three vehicles were stolen and an attempt was made on a fourth over the weekend.

Just before 5 p.m. Friday, staff from a dealership on Woodlawn Road West reported a 2023 Dodge Durango SRT missing from their lot. Earlier in the day an employee had discovered a second Durango SRT with a broken window and damage to the dashboard, however the missing vehicle was not discovered for several more hours.

The missing vehicle is described as grey with black and red stripes over the top. It was unplated and likely had the window smashed to gain entry.

Just after midnight Saturday morning police were called to a different business on Woodlawn Road West. The complainant advised he and his wife were seeing a movie and when they came outside their black 2024 Mazda CX90 was missing.

Just before 1 p.m. Saturday, a resident of Westwood Road reported his black 2017 Honda Civic had been stolen from the parking lot of his apartment building.

Anyone with information about these thefts is asked to call the Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

The Guelph Police Service encourages residents to take steps to protect themselves from auto theft. This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Please report suspicious activity around unattended vehicles, especially during overnight hours.

Arrest after manager spat on

A Guelph woman has been arrested in connection with an incident late last year during which two people spat in the face of an employee trying to stop a theft.

Just before 2 p.m. December 22, the manager of a business near Woodlawn Road and Woolwich Street tried to remove a woman who had earlier been banned from the store. He had observed her concealing items.

As he walked her to the exit, the victim was approached by a second male who shoved him. Both subjects spat in the manager’s face before fleeing on foot.

On Sunday evening a 39-year-old Guelph woman was located downtown and arrested for robbery. She will appear in court March 25. The investigation is ongoing.

Drug and property charges

A Guelph woman faces drug and property charges after she was located in a vehicle Saturday morning.

Just before 11 a.m. police were called for a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot near Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue. Officers approached and noted a woman who appeared to be asleep and a baggie with white powder in the vehicle.

The woman was awakened and arrested for possession of a controlled substance. A search of the vehicle revealed quantities of suspected fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine, as well as several fake driver’s licences in various names and a stolen credit card.

A 41-year-old Guelph woman is charged with two counts of possessing controlled substances, possessing forged documents, possessing a stolen credit card and failing to comply with an undertaking. She will appear in court March 21.

Two impaired arrests

Two motorists were charged with impaired driving on the weekend, including one not old enough to legally drink.

Approximately 11:25 p.m. Saturday police were called by a west-end resident who advised her teenage son had been drinking and had just shoved her and took her pickup. Officers located the vehicle in a ditch just outside the city.

While speaking to the driver, officers noted a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 17-year-old is charged with impaired driving.

Just after midnight Monday morning, an officer observed a vehicle stopped in the exit from a licensed establishment on Silvercreek Parkway North. The driver waited a couple of minutes, then accelerated out of the driveway at a high rate of speed.

The officer followed the vehicle and pulled it over. While speaking to the driver the officer immediately detected a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test the male was arrested and transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 23-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and driving without a licence.

Both accused had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They were released with upcoming court dates.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.

Second arrest in robbery, attempted robbery

A second Waterloo man has been arrested for attempting to rob a Guelph business and robbing a Brantford business nearly two years ago.

Shortly after noon June 19, 2023, three males in a stolen vehicle attended a business on Silvercreek Parkway North. They were wearing gloves, masks and sunglasses and carrying reusable shopping bags, but were unable to enter the business as the front doors were locked as a safety precaution.

Later that afternoon the males drove the same stolen vehicle to a Brantford business, where they brandished weapons and stole a large quantity of prescription medication.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, an 18-year-old Waterloo man was arrested in Toronto Wednesday while serving a sentence for an unrelated matter. The accused, who was 16 at the time of these crimes, is charged with robbery, attempted robbery, possessing stolen property over $5,000 and several weapons offences. He will appear in court March 19.

A 19-year-old Waterloo man, who was 17 at the time, was earlier arrested on similar charges and will appear in court later this month. The investigation is ongoing.

Arrest in $50k lotto theft

A Waterloo man has been arrested in connection with the theft of nearly $50,000 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets late last year.

Police were called December 16 to a business on Woodlawn Road West. Investigation revealed a suspect had pried open the front doors to gain entry to the store the previous day.

They were captured on video a short time later exiting the business with two reusable shopping bags filled with scratch tickets and fleeing in their vehicle. The owner of the business advised the tickets were not activated at the time of the theft and would be flagged so they could not be redeemed.

An investigation by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation revealed someone had attempted to redeem one of the stolen tickets the morning of December 15 at a business in Waterloo.

On Wednesday morning a 39-year-old Waterloo man was arrested and charged with break and enter and possessing stolen property over $5,000.

Three businesses entered in same plaza

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after three businesses in the same south-end plaza were entered early Tuesday.
Approximately 4:45 a.m. police received a call from a security guard who had attended to check on an alarm at a business near Gordon Street and Clair Road East. When he arrived he discovered three neighbouring businesses with their front doors smashed.

Surveillance video from one of the businesses showed three males entering the plaza on foot from Poppy Drive. One of the males was carrying what appeared to be a hammer which he used to smash the glass doors. Small amounts of cash were reported stolen from each of the businesses and one also had a tablet torn off a wall and smashed.

The incidents are under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Kent Schneider at 519-824-1212, ext. 7164, email [email protected], leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

Facebook pics used in extortion attempt

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a mother received messages Tuesday threatening her children.

Tuesday morning a woman contacted police and reported she had received messages from an unknown person through a messaging app. The messages included photos of the woman’s three children and indicated their lives could be at risk if the woman did not pay $1,000. She instead contacted police.

Investigation revealed the photos had been taken from the victim’s own Facebook account.

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Graeme Adams at 519-824-1212, ext. 7419, email [email protected], leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

Sextortion attempt

Residents are reminded not to share images or information with strangers online after an extortion attempt Tuesday.

A man in his 60s reported he was playing an online game on his phone when he received a message which appeared to be from a woman and included a revealing profile photo. They began chatting and the woman eventually asked the complainant to send a photo of himself.

He sent a photo of his face, then a short time later received a fake Facebook post which included that photo and a photo of an exposed penis. The post was clearly designed to suggest the penis was the complainant’s and the unknown user threatened to share it unless he sent Apple gift cards.

Residents are reminded to be cautious when interacting with strangers online. Any information or images shared can be manipulated and used against you.

Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if no financial loss has been sustained, interactions can still be reported to the CAFC.

Two Tundras stolen, four more attempts

Toyota Tundras remain at the top of thieves’ hit list in Guelph, with two more stolen over the weekend and attempts made on four others.

Just after 7 a.m. Friday, a resident of Clairfields Drive West reported they had come outside in the morning to find a window broken on their 2022 Tundra and the steering wheel cut to remove an anti-theft device. The truck is equipped with an immobilizer device, preventing it from being stolen.

Just after 2 a.m. Saturday a resident near Grange Road and Cityview Drive North reported someone had just attempted to steal his 2023 Tundra, smashing a window and breaking part of the steering column. The truck was equipped with a brake pedal locking device.

Surveillance video revealed two males – one dressed in all black and the other in all red – arriving in a small silver car and approaching the truck. A small white SUV with a moon roof also drove past twice however it is not known if the occupants were involved.

A short time later, a resident near Willow Road and Marksam Road reported his black 2024 Tundra had just been stolen from his driveway. He reported seeing a white Acura SUV and silver Hyundai sedan stopping in front of his house and a short time later saw his truck being driven away.

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday a resident near Kortright Road West and Ironwood Road was awakened by a grinding sound. He looked outside and saw two vehicles – described as a white SUV and a red SUV – fleeing from the area. A window had been smashed on his Tundra and the steering wheel had been cut to remove an anti-theft device.

Approximately two hours later, police were called by a resident near Pine Ridge Drive and Farley Drive, who was awakened by a motion sensor alarm. He looked outside and saw a man walking away from the his Tundra. The man got into the passenger side of another Tundra which had been parked along the street.

That Tundra drove and parked in front of the complainant’s house. He activated his alarm and the two males ran back to the second truck and fled the area.

Approximately 7:30 a.m. Saturday, a resident near Flanders Road and Devere Drive reported his grey 2024 Tundra had been stolen from the driveway sometime overnight. It was described as having a grey fiberglass cap on the back.

Since September 1, nine Toyota Tundras have been stolen in Guelph and attempts have been made to steal at least eight more.

Expired plate leads to impaired

An expired licence plate permit led to an impaired driving charge for a Guelph man Saturday night.

Just after 11 a.m. a vehicle was pulled over on Grange Street because the permit was expired. While speaking to the driver an odour of alcohol was detected on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test the driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 47-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court February 18.
