Shot Fired – One Charged

(ELGIN COUNTY, ON) – One person is charged following a firearms investigation at the Ontario Police College (OPC) in the Township of Malahide.

On Friday, October 13, 2023, members of the Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment responded to a report of a negligent discharge of a firearm during a training scenario. No injuries were reported.

As a result of the investigation, an instructor from the OPC, Katherine WILLIAMS, age 56, has been charged with careless use of a firearm.

The accused has been released and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Thomas on November 14, 2023.

Elgin County OPP is continuing the investigation in conjunction with the Chief Firearms Office for Ontario.

WETTLAUFER Arrested

(HURON EAST, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Huron East resident with Impaired Operation after a theft complaint was reported to police on Sunday, September 24th

Huron OPP officers were dispatched to an address on Moncrieff Road in Huron East at approximately 10:00 a.m. on September 24th. Once on scene, officers observed a vehicle parked on the lawn of the residence and spoke to the driver who displayed signs of impairment. Officers had reason to believe that the driver was impaired by drug, and they were subsequently arrested.

The accused was then transported to the Huron OPP Detachment in Clinton for further tests by an OPP Drug Recognition Expert (D.R.E.). 

Ashley WETTLAUFER, 38 years-of-age from Huron East has been charged with the following offence:

–      Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs.

The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused’ driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.

The accused was later released from custody with a court appearance scheduled at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich on November 6th, 2023.

22 Year Old From “North Huron” Arrested In Wingham

(NORTH HURON, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a North Huron resident with an Impaired Operation – Over 80 driving offence following a traffic stop on Friday, September 22nd. 

On September 22, 2023, at 10:40 p.m., police observed a motor vehicle stopped near the intersection of Josephine Street and John Street East in the Town of Wingham, Township of North Huron. The officer observed people outside of the vehicle with suspected open alcohol. The officer then conducted a traffic stop to check the sobriety of the driver. Police spoke to the driver and determined that they had been consuming alcohol prior to driving. The driver registered a “Fail” on the roadside screening device (ASD) and was subsequently placed under arrest for Operation Over 80 and taken into custody. The driver was transported to the Huron County OPP detachment in Clinton for further breath tests with an OPP qualified breath technician.

Dustin BAKALAR, 22 years of age from North Huron has been charged with:

–      Operation while Impaired – Over 80.

The accused’ driver’s license was suspended for a period of 90 days and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

The accused was later released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for November 6th at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

Tractor Vs Building In Seaforth

(HURON EAST, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a collision involving a farm tractor with two trailers attached and a Seaforth store front which has caused extensive damage to a building located on Main Street. 

Huron County OPP were dispatched to the scene of a collision on October 13th, 2023, at approximately 8:05 p.m. Upon arrival, emergency services discovered that a farm tractor had left the roadway and impacted the front of a building on Main Street in Huron East, Seaforth at approximately 8:00 p.m. The collision has caused extensive damage to the structural integrity of the building, which contains a business in the lower half, and a residence in the upper portion. The residents were home at the time of the collision, but thankfully were uninjured. The driver has been identified as a 23-year-old Huron East resident who was also uninjured. The cause of the collision is being investigated.

The involved tractor will be removed only when it is safe to do so. A road closure is still in effect, however pedestrian traffic is being allowed to access local businesses. The investigation is ongoing. More information to follow.

Hanover Drug Bust – ARMSTRONG, ALLARD, CARON & WHIBLEY

(HANOVER, ON) – On October 6, 2023, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crimes Unit (CSCU), South Bruce OPP and Hanover Police Service (HPS) executed a search warrant at a residence along 10th Street in Hanover. 

As a result of the execution of the warrant, police seized a quantity of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl.

Officers also seized offence related property including: a Honda generator, a BB gun, ammunition, a trail camera, and Stihl tools. The value of the recovered stolen property is estimated to be $1,000.

Brandon ARMSTRONG, 31-years-old, from Hanover was charged with:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of a Stolen Property – two counts

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton on November 1, 2023, to answer to the charges.

Paige ALLARD, 33-years-old, from Hanover was charged with:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton on November 1, 2023, to answer to the charge.

Crystal CARON, 34-years-old, from Hanover was charged with:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Stolen Property – two counts

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton on November 1, 2023, to answer to the charges.

Charleen WHIBLEY, 31-years-old, from Hanover was charged with:

$100,00 Investment Scam

(HURON EAST, ON) – The Huron Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a recent report of fraud in Huron East. Total loss from the fraud is reported to be $100,000.

On September 14th, Huron OPP was contacted by a Huron East resident who reported losing $100,000 in an internet investment scam between July and September 2023. The victim explained to police that they were referred to a cryptocurrency investment website by a person not known to them who made contact by text message initially. The victim initially invested $500 and was promised certain profits on their investment. The victim then invested an additional $100,000. The victim sent their money to an internet service which transferred the victim’s Canadian currency into cryptocurrency. The fraudsters eventually “froze” the investment and ceased all communication with the victim. The victim realized they had been scammed and called the police.

In 2022, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), fraud reports totaled a staggering $530 million in victim losses. This was nearly a 40% increase from the 2021, unprecedented $380 million in losses. It is estimated that only 5-10% of victims report scams and frauds to the CAFC or law enforcement.

Death Threats – James MASON Arrested

(GODERICH, ON) – An investigation conducted by the Huron County OPP involving damage to Town of Goderich property has resulted in several criminal charges for a Goderich resident.

On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at approximately 1:00 p.m. police received several 911 calls for reports of an individual displaying assaultive, destructive behaviour on the Square in Goderich. The individual was reported to be smashing a garbage container against a store front window.

OPP officers arrived on scene shortly after receiving the 911 calls and located the suspect in the area. The suspect was non-compliant and displayed assaultive behaviour, and a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was utilized to safely gain control of the suspect. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Huron OPP detachment for processing.

James MASON, 31 years of age from Goderich has been charged with:

  • Mischief Under $5,000,
  • Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm,
  • Causing a Disturbance.

The accused was processed, and later released from custody with an appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich on October 30th, 2023.

60 Year Old From ACW Arrested

(GODERICH, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged an Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Township resident with Impaired driving offences following a collision investigation on September 22nd, 2023. 

Just after 5:10 p.m. on Friday, September 22nd, Huron County OPP officers responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle that had collided with a hydro pole on Oxford Street, near Huron Road in the Town of Goderich. The involved driver did not remain at the scene of the collision and was later located at the Goderich Hospital with minor injury. Police spoke the driver and made a demand for their breath sample using the roadside screening device which resulted in a failure. The investigating officer subsequently arrested the driver for Impaired Operation.

The accused then provided further breath samples before a qualified Intoxilyzer Breath Technician. Suitable breath samples were provided to police which resulted in readings over the legal limit.

Ronda BOGIE, 60 years of age from Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Township has been charged with:

–      Operation while Impaired – alcohol and drugs,

–      Operation while Impaired – Over 80,

–      Dangerous Operation.

The accused was additionally charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) for failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days, and the accused’ driver’s license was suspended for a period of 90 days.

The accused was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for October 16th, 2023, at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

Scammer Gets $150,000

(ELGIN COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Elgin County Detachment is investigating a recent report of fraud in the Municipality of Central Elgin.

On October 5, 2023, Elgin County OPP was contacted by a resident of the Municipality of Central Elgin who reported losing more than $150,000 in an investment fraud over a period of two months starting in July 2023.

The victim explained to police that they were referred to an investment opportunity by an individual who they had met on a social media platform. The victim made a series of investments over a period of two months and when attempting to make a withdrawal of funds was only permitted access to a limited dollar amount.

The victim then contacted another agency claiming to be “Legal Services in Canada” to initiate an investigation and was informed that the initial lost could be recovered but a sum of money was required for fees and taxes. After paying the requested sum, the victim discovered that this too was a fraud, and contacted the police.

The investigation is on-going.

Cocaine Bust

(BLUEWATER, ON) – An investigation conducted by the Huron-Perth Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crimes Unit (CSCU), Grey-Bruce Community Street Crimes Unit (CSCU), West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), and members of the Huron OPP resulted in the seizure of illegal drugs, cash, and offence-related property with a total value exceeding $7,000.

On Thursday, September 28th, 2023, an individual was located and arrested in the Municipality of Bluewater as a result of a drug trafficking investigation. Following their arrest, a search warrant was executed at a residence on MacTavesh Street in Bluewater. A second individual was located and arrested during the warrant execution.

As a result of the investigation, police seized a quantity of suspected cocaine. Other seized items included digital scales, packaging material, and cellular phones. A quantity of Canadian currency was also seized.

The combined estimated value of the seized drugs is $700.

The combined estimated value of the seized property is $6,390.

Matthew O’BRIEN, 41 years of age from Arthur, Wellington North Township has been charged with:

  • Traffick in Schedule I substance – Cocaine,
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order (three counts),
  • Failure to Comply with Undertaking (four counts).

The accused was processed, held for a bail hearing, then later remanded into custody with a court appearance scheduled for October 23rd, 2023, in the Goderich Ontario Court of Justice.

Melissa MCCLEMENT, 37 years of age from Bluewater has been charged with:

  • Traffick in Schedule I substance – Cocaine.

The accused was processed, then later released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for October 23rd, 2023, in the Goderich Ontario Court of Justice.

Another Meth Bust In Listowel

(PERTH COUNTY, ON) – As a result of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation that was initiated in the Summer of 2023 in Perth County, two people were arrested and a search warrant was executed in the Municipality of North Perth.

On September 20, 2023, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Huron-Perth Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), with the assistance of the West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), executed a search warrant at a residence on Krotz Street in Listowel.

Police seized suspected methamphetamine, and a suspected stolen Can-Am utility vehicle.

Michael MCLAUGHLIN, a 40-year-old resident of North Perth, was charged with:

·      Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking- Methamphetamine

·      Altering/Destroying/Removing a Vehicle Identification Number

·      Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Other drugs

·      Allegation of Breach of Conditional Sentence

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Jessica Martin, a 34-year-old resident of North Perth was charged with:

·      Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking- Methamphetamine

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on October 23, 2023, to answer to the charge.

Two More Impaired Drivers Arrested

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested and charged two motorists with impaired driving this past weekend.

  • On September 24, 2023, at 4:28 p.m., the South Bruce OPP received a driving complaint in the town of Chesley. Officers located the vehicle and found that the driver had been drinking alcohol. Valeri MONK, 28-years-old, from the Municipality of Brockton was charged with Operate over 80 milligrams. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton on November 1, 2023, to answer to the charge.
  • On September 23, 2023, at 9:27 p.m., a South Bruce OPP officer on patrol along Bruce County Road 2 in Brant Township stopped a vehicle. The driver was found to have been drinking alcohol. Wayne WITTMAN, 63-years-old, from the Municipality of South Bruce was charged with Operate over 80 milligrams, Drive with open liquor and Fail to have insurance card. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton on November 1, 2023, to answer to the charges.

An impaired driving charge includes an immediate 90-day driver’s license suspension and an immediate 7-day vehicle impoundment.

Wellington OPP Weekly Update

(COUNTY OF WELLINGTON, ON) – Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to consolidate and streamline our notable traffic offences and publish a single weekly release.

On September 14, 2023, a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic along Wellington Road 4, Minto. At approximately 2:45 p.m., a red sedan was stopped. As a result of the investigation, a 43-year-old driver from Listowel, was charged with two counts of Drive while Under Suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (H.T.A.). The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court – Guelph, on January 17, 2024.

On September 14, 2023, at approximately 4:45 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a Commercial Motor Vehicle (C.M.V.) inspection of a white dump truck on Wellington Road 18, Pilkington. As a result of the investigation, a 26-year-old driver from Kitchner was charged with Fail to Surrender Inspection Schedule and Fail to Accurately Complete Daily Inspection Report contrary to the H.T.A. Further, a company from Stratford, was charged with Fail to Supply Driver with Daily Inspection Schedule, Fail to Ensure Daily Inspection Is Conducted Properly and Permit Use of Plate Not In Accordance with Act, contrary to the H.T.A.

On September 15, 2023, a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic on Highway 23, Minto. At approximately 7:00 p.m., a grey sedan was observed travelling above the posted 80km/hr speed limit. As a result of the investigation, Ethan Jonathan WHEATON, 24-years-old of Atwood, has been charged with Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand contrary to the Criminal Code (C.C.). Further, the driver was also charged with Drive Vehicle with Cannabis in Open Baggage contrary to the Cannabis Control Act (C.C.A.), Possession of a Schedule III Substance contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (C.D.S.A.), Driving Moor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquid contrary to the Liquor Licence Control Act (L.L.C.A.), and with Speeding and Use Plate not Authorized for Vehicle, contrary to the H.T.A. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice – Guelph, on October 6, 2023.

On September 16, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Ellis Road, Puslinch. It was reported that a motorcycle was driving at an extremely high rate of speed. As a result of the investigation, a 20-year-old driver from Cambridge, has been charged with Use Plate not Authorized for Vehicle, Drive Motor Vehicle – No Plates, Fail to Apply for Permit on Becoming Owner, and Drive Motor Vehicle – No Permit, contrary to the H.T.A.

On September 16, 2023, a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic along Wellington Road 109, Minto. At approximately 9:45 p.m., a black sedan was stopped. As a result of the investigation, a 26-year-old driver from Hanover, was charged with Drive while Under Suspension contrary to the H.T.A. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court – Guelph, on January 17, 2024.

On September 19, 2023, a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic along Main Street North, Mount Forest. At approximately 11:00 a.m., a black Sport Utility Vehicle (S.U.V.) was stopped. As a result of the investigation, a 25-year-old driver from Ayton, was charged with Drive while Under Suspension contrary to the H.T.A. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court – Guelph, on January 17, 2024.

On September 19, 2023, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Queen Street North, Harriston. It was reported that a driver was possibly impaired. As a result of the investigation, Korey Kenneth CHERREY, 34-years-old of Toronto, has been charged with Operation while Impaired and Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus), contrary to the C.C. Further, the driver was also charged with Driving while Under Suspension contrary to the H.T.A. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice – Guelph, on October 10, 2023. 

On September 20, 2023, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 6, Guelph/Eramosa. It was reported that a grey pickup truck was observed being driven erratically. As a result of the investigation, Kenvin Chester EMILIENNE, 43-years-old of Markdale, has been charged with Operation while Impaired and Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus), contrary to the C.C. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice – Guelph, on October 10, 2023. 

*Anyone charged with Operation while Impaired – B.A.C. 80 Plus (mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood) or Failing to Comply with Demand receives a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and a 7-day Vehicle Impoundment as per statute.

*Anyone charged with Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt receives a 14-day impoundment and a 30-day driver’s licence suspension as per statute.

61 Year Old Arrested After Pub Visit

(BLUEWATER, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Central Huron resident with several offences following a traffic stop for dangerous driving on September 15th, 2023. 

On Friday, September 15th, 2023, at 12:43 a.m. Huron County OPP was contacted by a concerned citizen who advised that they believed a person was planning on driving after drinking alcohol at a local pub in Bluewater. Officers patrolled the area and observed a vehicle depart a business location and proceed to drive dangerously through the Village of Bayfield. The suspect vehicle continued northbound on Bluewater Highway and was pulled over by police. In speaking to the driver, the investigating officer determined that the driver had consumed alcohol prior to driving and was subsequently arrested for Impaired Operation and Dangerous Driving.

The accused was transported to the Huron OPP detachment in Clinton to provide breath tests before a qualified Intoxilyzer Technician. The accused refused to provide breath samples as were required by law.

Edgar BAUER, 61 years of age from Central Huron has been charged with:

–      Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs,

–      Dangerous Operation,

–      Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand.

The accused was additionally charged with an offence found in the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA).

The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days, and the accused’ driver’s license was suspended for a period of 90 days.

The accused was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for October 23rd, 2023, at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

Violence Continues To Soar In Huron County

(SOUTH HURON, ON) – On September 15th, 2023, members of the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted for a report of an intimate partner dispute incident in the Municipality of South Huron.

As a result of the investigation, OPP learned that the involved suspect had failed to comply with an undertaking in relation to a condition involving communication with their partner.

A 33-year-old individual from South Huron has been charged under the Criminal Code with: Failure to Comply with Undertaking.

The accused was arrested and held for a bail hearing in the Goderich Ontario Court of Justice.

(SOUTH HURON, ON) – On September 15th, 2023, members of the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted for a report of an intimate partner dispute incident in the Municipality of South Huron.

As a result of the investigation, OPP learned that the involved suspect had committed 15 criminal offences involving their partner.

A 42-year-old individual from South Huron has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

–      Criminal Harassment (two counts),

–      Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm – Spousal,

–      Sexual Assault,

–      Forcible Confinement,

–      Assault – Spousal (three counts),

–      Mischief – Domestic,

–      Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon (three counts),

–      Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (three counts).

The accused was arrested and held for a bail hearing in the Goderich Ontario Court of Justice.

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – On September 19th, 2023, members of the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted for a report of a disturbance incident in the Municipality of Central Huron.

As a result of the investigation, OPP learned that the involved suspect had committed criminal offences involving their partner and committed further criminal offences while interacting with the investigating officers. A total of 14 charges have been laid.

A 41-year-old individual from Central Huron has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

–      Mischief – Domestic,

–      Causing a Disturbance,

–      Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm,

–      Assault Peace Officer,

–      Resist Peace Officer,

–      Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon,

–      Carrying a Concealed Weapon,

–      Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (four counts),

–      Failure to Comply with Probation Order (three counts).

The accused was arrested and held for a bail hearing in the Goderich Ontario Court of Justice.
