Puppy On Driver’s Lap Leads To Rollover Collision Near Wingham

(MORRIS-TURNBERRY, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Morris-Turnberry resident with Careless Driving following a single vehicle rollover on January 15th on Howick-Turnberry Road. 

Just after 11:15 a.m. on January 15th, Huron County OPP responded to a collision scene involving an SUV on Howick-Turnberry Road, outside Wingham. 

The investigation revealed that the lone female driver was holding her puppy while driving at which time the puppy fell into the driver’s side wheel well area, causing the driver to lose control of the Cadillac Escalade and enter the ditch, rolling the SUV. The driver received minor injuries and was transported to Wingham hospital and later released. The puppy was reportedly uninjured.

The 35-year-old driver from Morris-Turnberry has been charged with Careless Driving.

The Huron OPP would like to remind the public that any animals, persons, or property should be secured and not interfere with the proper management or control of the motor vehicle.

Matthew BOUVIER Arrested Again – Arson

(HURON EAST, ON) – Members from the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and OPP Forensic Identifications Unit investigated a fire that took place in Seaforth early last week.

On January 10, 2023, at approximately 8:00 a.m. Huron County OPP and the Huron East Fire Department responded to a suspicious fire located at a multi-unit apartment building on Market Street in Seaforth. All residents inside the building had to be evacuated.        

The investigation revealed a male suspect had started a fire inside the entrance of the apartment building, causing smoke damage. The dollar value of the damage to the building has yet to be established.

Matthew BOUVIER, 31 years-of-age of no fixed address has been charged with the following offences:

–      Arson – Disregard for Human Life

–      Fail to Comply with Probation Order x 4 counts

The accused has since been remanded into custody.

MILLS Arrested Again – Passed Out Behind Wheel, Stolen Property Etc.

(SOUTH HURON, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Thorndale resident with twelve offences after an observant citizen contacted police for a driver passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in the Kirkton LCBO parking lot on January 10th. 

Huron OPP officers were dispatched to the Kirkton LCBO located on Road 164 in South Huron at approximately 11:30 a.m. on January 10th. When officers arrived, they observed a white Ford Escape parked in the LCBO parking lot with a lone male behind the wheel. The vehicle was running, and the driver was eventually awoken by police. Officers had reason to believe that the driver was impaired by drug, and he was subsequently arrested. A quantity of suspected fentanyl was found on the driver during a search.

The accused was then transported to the Wellington OPP Detachment for further tests by an OPP Drug Recognition Expert.  

Further investigation revealed that the Ford Escape and attached license plates were stolen out of London. The driver was prohibited from driving and was also bound by a probation order and another release order.

Bradley MILLS, 34 years-of-age from Thorndale has been charged with the following offences:

–      Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs,

–      Possession of Stolen Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000,

–      Possession of Stolen Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000,

–      Fail to Comply with Probation Order x 2 counts,

–      Possession of Schedule I Substance – Opioid,

–      Fail to Comply with Release Order,

–      Operation while Prohibited x 2 counts.

The accused was also charged with Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and Cannabis Control Act (CCA) offences, including Driving While Under Suspension, Use Plate Not Authorized, and Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available.

The accused was remanded into custody.

More Sexual Assaults In North Perth

(NORTH PERTH, ON) – The Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged an individual after receiving a report of historical domestic assaults.

On January 11, 2023, members of the Perth County OPP began an investigation and learned of historical domestic incidents occurring in the Municipality of North Perth. It was determined that one person has assaulted on one occasion in October 2022. The victim did not sustain any serious injuries.    

As a result, 31-year-old resident of North Perth has been arrested and charged with:

–      Assault Cause Bodily Harm – Choke, suffocate or strangle

–      Uttering Threats – Cause death or Bodily Harm (2 counts)  

–      Mischief – Domestic

–      Sexual Assault

–      Unauthorized possession of a Firearm (4 counts)

The accused was held for bail.

78 Year Old Charged For Hit & Run

(NORTH PERTH, ON) – Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a Listowel resident for fail to remain at collision.   

On January 8, 2023, just after 6:00 p.m.., the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two-motor vehicle collision on Wallace Avenue North in the Municipality of North Perth.    

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that a sedan was travelling Northbound when they were struck by a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) travelling southbound. The SUV failed to stop. No injuries were reported.

A 78-year-old from Listowel has been charged with:

–      Fail to report accident

–      Fail to remain

The accused was issued a Provincial Notice for each offence.

Fatal Collision – Name Of Deceased Released

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – On January 12, 2023, at 12:53 p.m., the Huron detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a three-vehicle collision along Huron Road in the Municipality of Central Huron.

Officers responded to the scene with members of Huron County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to find a pick-up truck, a car and a transport truck involved in the collision..

The driver of the car, 44-year-old Michael OAKES of Central Huron was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. 

The driver of the pick-up truck reported minor injuries at the scene and the driver of the transport truck reported no injuries at the scene.

The Huron OPP is continuing to investigate the collision along with members of the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team and the Coroner’s Office.

Huron Road was closed at the scene for the protection of emergency responders. It has since re-opened for traffic.

Werner NAGEL – Drunk Driving

(HURON TWP, ON) – On January 9, 2023, at 9:17 p.m., the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a single vehicle collision along Highway 21 in Huron Township. Officers arrived to find a pick-up truck was at rest in the ditch.

The driver was found to have been consuming alcohol. They were placed under arrest and taken to a Qualified Intoxilizer Technician for breath tests.

Werner NAGEL, 58-years-old, of Goderich Township was charged with Operate over 80 milligrams.

The accused will be appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton as required to answer to the charges.

This charge includes an immediate 90-day driver’s license suspension and an immediate 7-day vehicle impoundment.

Jewelry & Clothing Stolen During Break & Enter

(SOUTH HURON, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are actively investigating an overnight break, enter and theft that took place in Exeter.

Sometime between December 26th and December 27th unknown suspect(s) forced entry into a business located on Main Street South in Exeter. Once inside the business, the suspect(s) stole a large quantity of men’s and women’s clothing, including jackets, jeans, sleepwear, and men’s underwear. A quantity of various costume jewelry was also stolen. The total value of stolen items exceeds $7,000.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance should they have any knowledge of this incident.

Murray SUBJECT Charged Again

(NORTH PERTH, ON) – On December 31, 2023, just after 10:15 a.m., a Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer observed a vehicle, whereas the registered owner is a prohibited driver. The officer conducted a traffic stop on McDonald Street West in the Municipality of North Perth.

During the investigation, police confirmed the driver was a prohibited driver.  

As a result, Murray SUBJECT, 43-year-old of North Perth has been charged with:

–      Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code

The driver’s vehicle was impounded for 45 days. The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Stratford at a later date to answer to the charge.

Two More Drunk Drivers Arrested – FINLAY & DAVIDSON

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged two impaired drivers this past weekend: less than twenty-four hours apart.

  • On January 7, 2023, at 1:21 a.m., a South Bruce OPP officer on patrol conducted a vehicle stop along Ross Street in Lucknow. The officer found that the driver had been drinking alcohol. The driver was placed under arrest and taken to a Qualified Intoxilizer Technician for breath tests. Paul FINLAY, 60-years-old of Huron-Kinloss Township was charged with Operate over 80 milligrams.
  • On January 6, 2023, at 3:07 a.m., the South Bruce OPP received a report of a possible impaired driver along Bruce County Road 3 in Brant Township. Officers located the vehicle and found that the driver had been drinking alcohol. The driver was placed under arrest and taken to a Qualified Intoxilizer Technician for breath tests.   Josh DAVIDSON, 27-years-old, of Brantford, was charged with Impaired Driving and Operate over 80 milligrams. 

Both accused will be appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton to answer to the charges.

An impaired driving charge includes an immediate 90-day driver’s license suspension and an immediate 7-day vehicle impoundment.

Dine & Dasher Facing Fraud & Drunk Driving Charge

(NORTH PERTH, ON) – Another driver charged with an impaired related offence in the Municipality of North Perth.

On January 8, 2023, just after 12:00 a.m., a Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received information of an impaired driver that had left a restaurant located on Main Street West in Listowel.

During the investigation, it was determined that an impaired driver left the restaurant without paying their bill and drove away. The driver was located at their residence. The male was showing signs of impairment and there was open alcohol was observed in the vehicle.

A roadside screening device was administered, the driver was subsequently arrested and transported to a local operations center for further testing.

Raymond CHIPUNZA, 38, of North Perth, has been charged with:

–      Operation while Impaired – alcohol and drugs

–      Failure or Refusal to comply with demand

–      Food and Lodging Fraud

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 7-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute.  

The accused has been released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Stratford at a later date to answer to the charges.

28 Year Old From Central Huron Arrested

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Central Huron resident with Impaired Operation – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus) following a failed roadside test on January 6th at approximately 6:10 p.m. on Base Line. 

Huron County OPP officers were investigating a collision on Base Line in the Municipality of Central Huron on the afternoon of Friday, January 6th. A section of Base Line was closed to protect the scene. An OPP officer was approached by a driver who had driven around the road closure sign to speak with police. In speaking with the driver, the officer detected the odour of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath which led to the officer conducting a roadside screening device test on the driver. The roadside breath test resulted in a failure and the driver was placed under arrest and taken into custody. 

The accused was then transported to the Huron OPP Detachment for further breath tests. Two samples of breath were supplied to the Intoxilyzer Technician and both tests were found to be over the legal limit. 

Jonathan ATKINSON, 28 years of age from Central Huron has been charged with Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus).

The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days, and the accused’ driver’s license was suspended for a period of 90 days.

The accused has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for January 30th, 2023, at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

Prohibited Driver Caught Speeding – PHIPPS

(PERTH EAST, ON) – On January 7, 2023, just after 3:00 p.m., a Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer stopped a vehicle travelling on Perth Line 43 in the Township of Perth East, after it was found to be speeding.

During the investigation, police were notified that the driver was a prohibited driver.

As a result, Michael PHIPPS, 46-year-old of Mitchell has been charged with:

–      Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code

The driver’s vehicle was impounded for 45 days. The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Stratford at a later date to answer to the charge.

Mobility Scooter Operator Facing Drunk Driving Charge

(GODERICH, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Goderich resident with Impaired Operation, and Impaired Operation – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus) following a complaint received by police on January 7th in Goderich. 

Just after midnight on January 7th, Huron County OPP received information from a concerned resident on St. David Street who observed a mobility scooter being driven by a male they believed had been drinking alcohol. Officers patrolled the area of the complaint and located the suspect driver a short time later on Walnut Street. The mobility scooter had been abandoned on John Street. The driver displayed signs of impairment and was placed under arrest and taken into custody. 

The accused was then transported to the Huron OPP Detachment for breath tests. Two samples of breath were supplied to the Intoxilyzer Technician and both tests were found to be over the legal limit. 

Ronald CARRICK, 56 years of age from Goderich has been charged with Operation While Impaired, and Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus).

The accused has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for February 13, 2023, at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich. 

The Huron OPP would like to remind the public that motorized mobility scooters are defined as motor vehicles under the Criminal Code of Canada.

$7,000 In Bicycles Stolen

(GODERICH, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating the theft of 5 bicycles from a residence located on Victoria Street North in Goderich.

On December 26, 2022, Huron OPP officers received a report that the bicycles were stolen sometime overnight on Dec 25/26 while the homeowner was away. The suspect(s) defeated a padlock to access the detached shed where the bicycles were stored. The bicycles are described as follows:

–      “Trek” e-Bike, black in colour

–      “Rocky Mountain” mountain bike, red in colour

–      “Rocky Mountain” mountain bike, grey in colour

–      “Norco”, blue in colour

–      “Supercycle” mountain bike, red in colour

The total value of all the bicycles is approximately $7,000+
