(HALIBURTON, ON) – On May 14, 2014 at 2:15 am Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haliburton Highlands Detachment responded to a vehicle driving on the football field at Haliburton Highlands Secondary School on County Road 21 in the Municipality of Dysart et al, Ontario. Police arrived to find that the vehicle had fled the scene but had caused significant damage to the field by doing donuts on the grass area of the field. Shortly after that police responded to a similar event in Minden Ontario where the baseball fields were damaged. At approximately 5:00 am police located a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu vehicle and the occupants at a park on Pacific road in Minden. More damage had been caused at that location and the vehicle eventually became disabled which ended the crime spree. OPP arrested the three vehicle occupants and as a result the following persons were charged:

Sasha WHITE age 20 from Minden charged with Impaired Operation, Operating a Motor Vehicle with Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol, and Mischief Over $5000

Rachel POLLARD age 20 from Minden charged with Mischief Over $5000

Sydney CARRIERE age 19 from Minden charged with Mischief Over $5000

The accused are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Minden on July 02, 2014.

(Kenora, ON) On May 13, 2014, members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Emergency Response Team (ERT) conducted a missing person search for Hughie WHISKEYJACK, age 47 from Kenora. WHISKEYJACK was reported missing on May 12, 2014 and was last seen at Separation Rapid’s Camp off the English River Road.

On May 13, 2014, OPP members located WHISKEYJACK, who was deceased. WHISKEYJACK was located close to where he was last observed. A post mortem examination to be conducted on May 14, 2014.

(Cavan Monaghan Township, ON) – On May 13, members of the Peterborough County OPP were called to investigate a report of a theft of a yard work vehicle from a property that occurred on Moncrief Line.

Unknown suspect(s) attended the property and stole a Bob Cat Skid Steer and left the area.

(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – On Wednesday May 21 2014 the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will be going through the Town of Parry Sound.

Officers with the OPP, Provincial Corrections, Canada Border Services Agency, the RCMP and other law enforcement partners, along with local Special Olympians will be running and walking to raise funds for and awareness of Special Olympics.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest source of funds for Special Olympics Ontario, which supports more than 19,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities. The District of Parry Sound has an amazing group of Special Olympics athletes.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. from the Parry Sound Fire Hall and will finish at the Royal Bank of Canada.

Runners will have their collection buckets ready for those who wish to make a donation.

A 34 year old Rodney, ON man is in serious condition after being involved in an ATV collision yesterday May 13, 2014.

Police were called to the collision at approximately 9pm in the area of Queens Line just West of Kerr Road, West Elgin. The lone male was operating the ATV eastbound on Queens line when he lost control of the ATV causing it to roll. The male was not wearing a helmet and sustained severe injuries. He was transported to hospital in serious condition with life threatening injuries.

Police continue to investigate the collision.

(Otonabee South Monaghan Township, ON) – On May 13, at approximately 9:46 p.m. members of the Peterborough County OPP were called to investigate a report of a domestic dispute that occurred at an Pinecrest Avenue.

Attending officers were advised that a 53 year old female and a 68 year old male had been involved in a domestic relationship. On this date the two had become involved in a argument that quickly became assaultive. As a result of the assault the male was stabbed several times and the female was arrested and charged with Assault with a Weapon and Assault.

The victim received medical treatment and his injuries are not deemed to be serious in nature.

She was held in custody with a bail hearing scheduled for May 14 2014 to appear in Peterborough Provincial Courts.

The identities of the parties involved are being withheld due to the nature of the offence.

(KIRKLAND LAKE, ON.) – The Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reminds motorists that there is a greater occurrence of wildlife crossings and sightings on our highways, roads and roadsides during the Victoria Day Long Weekend. Large wildlife such as deer, moose and bears are more mobile at this time of the year when searching for food and trying to get relief from the fly population. They are often spotted near or on roads and highways on their travels.

The OPP would like to emphasize some important points when dealing with the sudden emergence of large wildlife onto our highways, roads and at the side of the road. It is important to remember that deer and moose crossing signs are only posted where there are frequent sightings and crossings. The reality is that these animals can be seen anywhere, at anytime therefore we should never lower our level of awareness when driving in areas that are absent of these signs. When driving at night, it is important to use your high beams whenever possible.

If you do encounter large wildlife such as deer or moose on the road and can safely avoid hitting them, do so, but be absolutely certain that oncoming traffic or soft shoulders don’t put you and others at risk. Also do not direct your full attention to the animal when you take measures to avoid hitting it, because you will hit it every time. Instead, focus your attention on the alternate route you decide to take, again only if this manoeuvre doesn’t place you and others in danger. When you see a moose or deer while travelling at 90 kilometres per hour, then apply on the brakes, you will travel another 75 meters (246 ft.) during the three seconds that it takes you to react to the situation.

Staff/Sgt Rick Witty Kirkland Lake OPP Detachment Commander states, “When travelling our roads and highways, we must always be mindful of the wildlife around us, particularly at night, and when their seasonal habits and behaviours result in increased sightings and encounters. During your Victoria Day weekend travels reduce your speed and drive defensively. Help preserve our public’s safety as well as conserving our natural resources. They don’t know better, we do.”
