Guelph Police Daily Update 22Mar2024

Waste truck driver charged following collision

A waste collection truck driver has been charged with careless driving after a collision Thursday morning which left a south-end road closed most of the day.

Approximately 8:35 a.m. police were called to the intersection of Clair Road West and Gosling Gardens. The truck was being driven when the collection forks became snagged on telecommunications lines, pulling down two light standards which fell across the road.

Roads in the area were closed most of the day as crews worked to restore service and replace the damaged poles.

The 50-year-old truck driver was charged with careless driving.

Pickup stolen in Guelph recovered in Italy

A pickup truck stolen from Guelph more than a year ago has been recovered after being located in Italy.

In November, 2022, a Guelph man reported his 2021 Ram Bighorn stolen from his driveway near Brant Avenue and Montana Road.

On Thursday, the Guelph Police Service was notified the truck was at the Port of Montreal, after it was located in Italy and shipped back to Canada. The original owner has since been paid by his insurance company, which was notified of the truck’s current location.

Three drivers taken off road for stunt driving

Three motorists have been taken off the road after they were each caught driving nearly twice the speed limit on city streets.

At 8:14 p.m. Thursday, a member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit was patrolling in the area of Edinburgh Road South and Wellington Street West when he clocked a BMW SUV travelling 91 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. A 25-year-old Maple man was charged with speeding and stunt driving.

Less than an hour later, just after 9 p.m., the same officer was patrolling near Whitelaw and Fife roads when he clocked a Honda Accord travelling 98 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The 50-year-old driver from Guelph was charged with speeding and stunt driving.

Then approximately 12:15 a.m. Friday, an officer patrolling near Gordon Street and Forbes Avenue observed a Ford Mustang driving 94 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. A 22-year-old Guelph man was charged.

Each of the drivers had their licences suspended immediately for 30 days and their vehicles impounded for 14 days. Drivers convicted of stunt driving face a minimum one-year licence suspension, minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and potentially jail time.

Pervert Alert – Eric CYR – Child Pornography

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) arrested and changed an Ottawa man following a joint investigation with the Northern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit (NAICE).

On March 19th, the Ottawa Police received information from NAICE regarding an Ottawa man making attempts to lure an underaged person that lives in Alberta. Yesterday, with the assistance of multiple OPS sections including, the Surveillance Unit, the South Neighbourhood Resource Team and Frontline Patrol officers, the man was arrested.

Eric CYR, 48-years-old, of Ottawa, was charged with the following:

–          Telecommunication with a person under the age of 18 for a specific criminal offence x3;

–          Making sexually explicit material available to a child;

–          Making child pornography;

–          Unlawfully possessing child pornography

He is scheduled to appear in court today.

Paul BEDUHN – Drunk Driving

(SEARCHMONT, ON) – A collision has resulted in impaired driving charges for one individual. On March 19, 2024, shortly before 10:00 p.m., the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was notified of a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 556 in Vankoughnet Township.   

Through investigation, officers determined the vehicle driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. As a result, Paul BEDUHN, 45 years-of-age, of Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs
  • Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 22, 2024 in Sault Ste. Marie. The accused was issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Repeat Offender Arrested Again

(SMITHS FALLS, ON) – The OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), OPP Canine, and the OPP Tactical Response Unit (TRU) assisted Smiths Falls Police Service (SFPS) with the execution of a warrant for a subject who was believed to be armed and barricaded in the Town of Smiths falls.

On March 21, 2024, the Smiths Falls Police Service requested assistance from the OPP on Lavina Street. OPP attended the location and multiple police resources worked together to locate a wanted individual; however, the accused was not located.

Police later located the accused at a residence on Parkland Court in the Town of Smiths Falls.

The accused was transported to hospital for unrelated injuries.

Caleb Mitchell BENNETT, 34 years old of South Elmsley Township was arrested on an outstanding warrant and charged with:

·      Mischief Under $5000

·      Failure to comply with a release order- other than to attend court- two counts

The accused is being held for bail and is scheduled to appear in Brockville Court on March 22, 2024.

Richard KOZAK Arrested After Hit & Run and Rollover

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – An individual was charged following an investigation into an incident of impaired driving.

At approximately 6:57 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2024, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment responded to and investigated a report of a two-vehicle collision on Gunton Drive in Simcoe, Norfolk County.

It was determined that vehicle leaving a driveway had recently collided with a parked vehicle and then left the scene. No injuries were reported.

Soon after, officers received a report of a single-vehicle rollover on Nixon Road in Windham, Norfolk County.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle involved in the rollover was the same one that had fled from the scene of the collision on Gunton Drive a short time earlier.

After evaluating the driver’s sobriety at the scene, the driver was taken into custody without incident. They were later taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Charged with the following alleged offences is 26-year-old Richard KOZAK of Norfolk County:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs,
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus),
  • Dangerous operation,
  • Drive motor vehicle – no licence,
  • Fail to remain.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Simcoe on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

911 Calls Lead To Arrest Of Donald HAWKINS

(QUINTE WEST, ON) – The Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged one person following several months worth of unsubstantiated calls to 911.

On March 19, 2024, Quinte West OPP with the assistance of the Quinte West Crime Unit arrested one male following an extensive investigation into unsubstantiated calls to 911. The investigation started in late October 2023 and continued into March 2024 regarding unfounded emergency calls to 911. Quinte West Fire Services, Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services and Quinte West OPP all responded to numerous emergency calls that were deemed not legitimate. 

Donald HAWKINS, 24 years old from Quinte West, Ontario, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Public Mischief – 14 counts
  • Mischief – seven counts

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville and has since been released.

$300,000 Drug Bust

(BRACEBRIDGE, ON) – In early 2024, the Muskoka Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted an investigation into drug trafficking through-out the District of Muskoka.

On March 20th and 21st, 2024, with the assistance of theCentral Region Tactics and Rescue Unit, the Orillia Community Street Crime Unit, and Bracebridge Detachment officers, investigators executed five search warrants, two in the Town of Bracebridge and three withinthe City of Toronto. As a result of the investigation, police seized a quantity of fentanyl, cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, various prescription medications, a large quantity of cash and drug trafficking paraphernalia.The estimated street value of the drugs seized is in excess of $300,000. 

As a result of the investigation, the following accused were arrested and face the following charges:

Daniel Shemar JOHNSON (24 years old, of Toronto)

– Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking, CDSA 5(2) x4

– Possession of Fentanyl for the Purpose of Trafficking, CDSA 5(2) x3

Another Wasaga Beach Drug Bust – Name Released

(WASAGA BEACH, ON) – The Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police executed a search warrant which resulted in an arrest and drug related charges being laid in the Town of Wasaga Beach.

In January 2024, Huronia West Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) initiated a drug trafficking investigation involving an individual who was allegedly trafficking drugs in Wasaga Beach and Collingwood. Utilizing investigative techniques, police were able to gather evidence further advancing their investigation.

On March 20, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Huronia West CSCU, with assistance from the Collingwood CSCU and Southern Georgian Bay CSCU, executed a search warrant for the accused’s residence and vehicle.

During the search, officers seized:

  • 11.5 grams of Cocaine
  • $280 in Canadian Currency
  • A cellular device
  • 2 tablets of suspected Percocet

Ashik PATEL, 22-year-old of Wasaga Beach, was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie at a later date.

Cocaine & Weapons Bust

(PICTON, ON) – The East Region Community Street Crime Unit has arrested and charged two individuals after executing a search warrant in Picton yesterday.

On March 21, 2024 a search warrant was executed on Nery Avenue with the assistance of the East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit, Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit. As a result of the warrant, officers seized a firearm, a prohibited device, ammunition and a quantity of suspected cocaine.

Thomas MCCUMBER, age 34 and Amber RODGERS, age 28, both from Prince Edward County were charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of weapon

Both individuals were held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 22, 2024.

Hit & Run – Anonymous 89 Year Old Driver Runs Down Pedestrians In Crosswalk

(GREY HIGHLANDS, ON) – Two youth were treated for minor injuries after a collision in Markdale.

On March 21, 2024, at 10:36 a.m., the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a collision between a vehicle and two pedestrians that occurred at the intersection of Toronto Street North and Grey Road 12 in Markdale, and that the driver has left the scene. 

Police attended and determined that the pedestrians were crossing at the crosswalk when the vehicle struck them. The pedestrians were treated at the scene for minor injuries and not transported to hospital. Police canvassed the area for video surveillance to identify the driver and vehicle. 

An 89-year-old of driver from the Municipality of Meaford has been charged with:

·      Fail to yield to pedestrian on roadway

·      Fail to remain

·      Fail to report accident

Armed Home Invasion & Kidnapping – Suspects At Large

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is investigating an armed home invasion in Milton.

At approximately 2:00 am on March 21, 2024, a group of suspects broke into a home in the area of Clark Boulevard and Lancaster Boulevard in Milton. A male resident was awoken by the noise and confronted a male suspect near the bedroom.

The suspect pointed a gun at the resident and demanded cash or jewelry. A total of three suspects were seen in the house. The resident advised the males that there was no cash or valuables in the home and was then directed at gunpoint into his own truck idling in the driveway with a fourth suspect waiting behind the wheel. The resident was forced into the passenger seat while two suspects got into the back and another drove a stolen white BMW X5M vehicle the suspects arrived in.

The suspects drove the resident in his own truck a short distance from the house before he was told to get out.

In total, the suspects stole the resident’s Dodge RAM pickup truck, wallet and cell phone.

The residents did not sustain any physical injuries.

Descriptions for two of the armed suspects who entered the home are below. Descriptions for the other two suspects are not available.

Suspect 1:

Male, black, mid 20’s, approximately 5’10’ to 6’0’’ tall. Wearing a ski mask and dark clothing.

Suspect 2:

Male, black, late teens to early 20’s, thin build, and approximately 5’8” tall.

Break and Enter – CK24012573

Yesterday at approximately 7:30 a.m. officers were dispatched to attend the Park Street area in Chatham, responding to a break and enter.  Investigation revealed that sometime overnight, unknown suspect(s) entered a garage and stole various tools and a dirt-bike.  Investigation is on-going.

Public Intoxication Arrest – CK24012693

This morning, just after midnight, police responded to calls of a man stumbling down the middle of Grand Avenue in Chatham.  A highly intoxicated 50-year-old man was located and was not able to take care of himself.  He was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service headquarters, lodged until he was sober and issued a provincial offence notice for being intoxicated in a public place.

Break and Enter – CK24012652

Yesterday at approximately 5:25 p.m. police responded to a call of a break and enter at a residence on Harvey Street in Chatham. Officers learned that a sometime overnight unknown suspect(s) broke into a shed and stole a generator and two outboard motors.

Man arrested after recent break-ins

A Guelph man was arrested Wednesday following an investigation into recent commercial break-ins.

Shortly after noon, members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit executed a search warrant at an address near Neeve Street and Wellington Street East. Inside officers recovered property stolen from a restaurant break-in last Friday morning, as well as clothing similar to that seen on surveillance video from a break-in at another restaurant the same morning.

During the investigation, officers also determined power tools stolen earlier this week from a trailer on Essex Street had been sold through an online marketplace to an unsuspecting buyer for $700. Officers were able to locate and recover the tools, with the buyer now being out the money he paid for them.

A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with two counts of break and enter, trafficking in stolen property, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.

Stolen van found in south Guelph

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a stolen van was recovered in the south end.

Wednesday morning, the owner of a commercial property near Gordon Street and Gosling Gardens reported a van had been left on the property. The caller advised he called the business named on the side and they confirmed two of their vans were stolen earlier Wednesday from Caledon.

Video from another nearby business suggested the van was parked approximately 4:15 a.m. Wednesday and the two occupants were picked up by a second vehicle.

26 collisions during Wednesday storm

The Guelph Police Service responded to 26 motor vehicle collisions between 6:20 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Fortunately only three of the collisions involved minor injuries. No serious injuries were reported.

With more winter weather expected this week, motorists are reminded to drive according to weather and traffic conditions and leave themselves plenty of time to safely arrive at their destination.

Drug Bust – Names Released

(TOWNSHIP OF WELLINGTON NORTH, ON) – On February 20, 2024, the Community Street Crime Unit (C.S.C.U) of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) concluded a drug trafficking investigation and executed a search warrant at a residence on George Street, Arthur. Investigators also executed a search warrant at an address on Pioneer Drive, Kitchener and at John Carpenter Way, North Dumfries.

As a result, a firearm was seized, and two individuals are facing drug trafficking charges.

Justin James Frederick WILLIAMS-GALLEY, 28-years-old of Wellington North, was charged with Possession of a Schedule I substance (Cocaine) for the Purpose of Trafficking, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Cory Robert WINDLINGER, 31-years-old of Kitchener, was charged with Possession of a Schedule I substance (Cocaine) for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of a Schedule I substance (Methamphetamine) for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of a Schedule I substance (Opioid, other than Heroin) for the Purpose of Trafficking, and  

two counts of Possession of a Schedule I Substance (Other) for the Purpose of Trafficking, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Further, the accused was also charged with Unauthorized Possession of a prohibited or Restricted Firearm contrary to the Criminal Code.

Both were held for bail.

Repeat Offender Arrested Again – Meth A Factor

(PEMBROKE, ON) – A local individual is facing drug possession charges after a trespassing incident was reported in Pembroke.

On the evening of March 9, 2024, officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended an apartment building on Elizabeth Street in Pembroke in response to a trespassing complaint. Police located an individual who was trespassing and took them into custody. Suspected fentanyl and methamphetamines were seized during the investigation.  

Richard FARR Jr., age 36 of Laurentian Valley Township, has been charged with the following Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), Criminal Code (CC) and Trespass to Property Act (TPA) offences:

  • Possession of a schedule 1 substance – methamphetamine
  • Possession of a schedule 1 substance – fentanyl
  • Fail to comply with probation – three counts
  • Enter premises when entry prohibited

The accused was held for a bail hearing and remains in custody until their next appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on April 3, 2024.
