ALERT: Gold Chains Ripped From Victims Necks

The Windsor Police Service is warning the community to stay vigilant following two recent distraction thefts targeting jewelry.

A distraction theft occurs when suspects divert a person’s attention, often through conversation or unsolicited gifts, in order to steal jewelry, wallets, phones, or other valuables.

In the first incident (case #25-91808), two women approached a man in a South Windsor parking lot and tossed costume jewelry into his vehicle to create a distraction. When the victim looked away, the suspects pulled the gold chain from his neck before fleeing the scene.

In the second incident (case #25-96263), a female victim walking on Grand Boulevard was approached by two women in a black Lincoln MKX. The suspects engaged the victim in conversation, and one exited the vehicle to offer her two necklaces as a gift. After placing these cheap necklaces around the victim’s neck, the suspect forcibly removed the victim’s own gold necklace and fled the scene in the vehicle.

Police believe these incidents involve two different pairs of suspects.

“Distraction thefts are opportunistic crimes that rely on deception and quick action by the suspects,” said Constable Bianca Jackson. “We urge community members to be cautious when strangers offer unsolicited gifts or start unusual conversations. Never accept items from unknown people and report suspicious behaviour to the police immediately.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Target Base Unit at 519-255-6700, ext. 4350. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.catchcrooks.com.

Driver Rams Police Car, Flees Twice, Then Surrenders

A 27-year old male from Toronto, who had three separate driving incidents with Barrie Police on Wednesday September 17, is currently facing a number of very serious criminal charges for the manner in which he was dangerously observed driving his car.

On Wednesday morning, police observed a motor vehicle travelling at a very high rate of speed northbound on Yonge Street and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The speed was well in excess of the posted 50km/h speed limit and the driver was observed weaving in and out of traffic in a manner that was unsafe. Despite their efforts, police lost sight of the car in the area of Little Avenue.

Three minutes later, assisted by additional units, the same motor vehicle was observed exiting a nearby coffee shop and again attempts were made to stop the fleeing car. The driver disobeyed a red light at Yonge Street and Little Avenue and was last seen traveling eastbound at a rate of speed that was again, well over the posted 50km/h speed limit.

A short time later, due to the investigation that continued, police were able to locate the involved motor vehicle at a residence located northwest of Mapleview Drive East and Terry Fox Drive. As they approached the car, which was parked in the driveway, it reversed and struck an unmarked Barrie Police vehicle, which as a result sustained significant damage. The driver again fled at a high rate of speed.

The ongoing investigation concluded the following day after the accused attended Barrie Police Headquarters and surrendered to police. He has been charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation (3 counts)
  • Flight from Peace Officer (3 counts)
  • Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Weapon.

After being investigated for his unacceptable and dangerous driving behaviour, he was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on October 29, 2025.
