Tyler MOISES Arrested Following Collision

(LAIRD TOWNSHIP, ON) – A person was charged after crashing car into median on Highway 17 near Townline Road.

On July 19, 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call pertaining to a vehicle stuck in the median and a loan male driver in an intoxicated state.  Police attended, arrested the driver and the grey car was towed and impounded.   

Tyler MOISES, 31-years-old, from Echo Bay was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs
  • Dangerous operation

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on September 4, 2025.

The OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive. Report impaired drivers. Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.

Scott BAKER Was Arrested

(LAIRD TOWNSHIP, ON) – An individual is facing a criminal charge after failing to return a work truck as planned. On November 19, 2024, at approximately 1:22 p.m., the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call for a stolen vehicle. The complainant reported that an employee had failed to return a work truck and could not be reached after multiple attempts. 

Officers located the vehicle on Highway 17 near Pumpkin Point Road. With assistance from Batchewana First Nation Police Service and Garden River Anishinabek Police Service, a traffic stop was conducted. Investigation confirmed the vehicle was stolen, and the vehicle driver, Scott BAKER, 37 years-of-age, of Port Carling was arrested and charged with one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on January 13, 2025 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Armed Robbery – NICHOLSON & TORRANCE Arrested

(LAIRD, ON) – On March 9, 2024, shortly before 7:00 p.m., the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an unwanted person at a residence on Neebish Road in Laird Township. Investigation revealed an individual entered the victim’s property and attempted to steal a vehicle, then returned a short time later with a second individual, and left with items belonging to the victim. The accused individuals fled the scene prior to police arrival.  

On March 13, 2024, police completed their investigation and arrested both accused individuals. As a result, Leslie NICHOLSON, 34 years-of-age, of Garden River First Nation was charged with:

  • Robbery with Weapon
  • Using Firearm while Committing Offence
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Uttering Threats – Injure Animal
  • Theft Over $5,000
  • Mischief Under $5,000

The accused was held for a bail hearing, and subsequently released by the Ontario Court of Justice.

Lucas TORRANCE, 36 years-of-age, of Sault Ste. Marie was charged with:

  • Robbery with Weapon
  • Theft Over $5,000

The accused remains in custody, following a bail hearing. 

Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers were assisted by Batchewana First Nation Police, Anishinabek Police Service, East Algoma OPP, North East Region Canine Unit, and Sault Ste. Marie Crime Unit.

Suspended Driver With Cocaine Arrested – Name Released

(LAIRD, ON) – A traffic stop has resulted in multiple charges for one individual. On March 13, 2024, shortly before 9:00 p.m., the Batchewana First Nation Police was conducting general patrol on Neebish Road in Laird Township, when they observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.  

When officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, it fled the scene. It was located shortly after and a traffic stop was conducted. Investigation revealed that the driver’s licence was suspended. A subsequent search of the individual yielded a small amount of suspected cocaine.

As a result, Isaiah SCHIELE, 24 years-of-age, of Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with:

  • Failing to Stop for Police
  • Driving While Under Suspension
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Cocaine

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 22, 2024 in Sault Ste. Marie.
