Warning Signs Of An Overdose

(KENORA, ON) – Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Kenora have seen a rise in the number of suspected overdoses and would like to remind residents that it is dangerous to use illicit substances from unregulated sources.

The OPP encourages the public to call 9-1-1 immediately if you or anyone else you are with is experiencing an overdose. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act (GSDOA) provides some legal protection against simple drug possession charges for individuals who seek emergency help during an overdose. The GSDOA applies to anyone seeking emergency support during an overdose, including the person experiencing an overdose. The Act protects the person who seeks help, whether they stay or leave from the overdose scene before help arrives, and anyone else who is at the scene when help arrives.

Signs and symptoms of an overdose may include:

·     Difficulty walking, talking, and staying awake

·     Blue lips or nails

·     Very small pupils

·     Cold and clammy skin

·     Dizziness and confusion

·     Extreme drowsiness

·     Choking, gurgling, or snoring sounds

·     Slow, weak, or no breathing

·     Inability to wake up, even when shaken or shouted at

Police urge citizens not to handle any unknown substance, as some substances can be harmful to handle and require proper procedures and personal protective equipment. If a member of the community comes across something they suspect to be illegal drugs, they should notify the police, so the substance can be handled and disposed of in a safe manner.

Members of the public are also encouraged to ensure safe disposal of any expired or unused medication by contacting their pharmacy. Any prescription medication can be returned to a pharmacy or other prescription drug dispenser at any time. Medications can also be returned to hospitals or medical clinics or during a local prescription drug drop off/take back program.

The OPP is committed to supporting safe, healthy communities for all Ontarians. The OPP continues to work with community partners to strategically and collaboratively address the opioid crisis at the local and provincial levels.

Drug Bust – Names Released

(KENORA, ON) – On December 4, 2024, members of the Kenora OPP Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) with the assistance of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police conducted a traffic stop in the area of Highway 17 East.

Following the stop, two parties were placed under arrest for possession for the purpose of trafficking. As a result of a search, 25.34 grams of fentanyl, 2x 8mg hydromorphone pills and evidence of drug trafficking was seized.

As a result of the investigation the following individuals have been charged:

Julien THERIAULT – 36 year old male from Kenora

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl – Section 5(2) CDSA
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance – hydromorphone – Section 4(1) CDSA

Sally KOKOKOPENACE – 26 year old female from Grassy Narrows

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl – Section 5(2) CDSA
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance – hydromorphone – Section 4(1) CDSA

All arrested parties have been held in custody pending a bail hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice of Kenora.

Million Dollar Drug Bust – Names Released

(KENORA, ON) – Two out-of-province individuals are facing numerous drug and firearm-related charges after a search warrant was executed in Kenora.

In October 2024, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) began an investigation into the trafficking of fentanyl, crystal methamphetamine, hydromorphone and cocaine in Kenora and the surrounding area. Following an arrest, on November 19, 2024, OPP OCEB, Kenora OPP Community Street Crime Unit and Treaty Three Police Street Crime executed a search warrant in Pellatt Township at a residence rented on a short-term basis by one of the accused.

As a result of this investigation, officers seized:

·      approximately 962 grams of suspected fentanyl

·      approximately 1.2 kilograms of suspected crystal methamphetamine

·      approximately 287 grams of suspected cocaine

·      approximately 968 hydromorphone tablets (8 mg)

·      approximately 3 grams of crack cocaine

·      one rifle

·      two digital scales

·      two cellular devices

·      $4,060 in Canadian currency

The estimated street value of the drugs seized is $1,072,000.

Dawson CAMERON, age 25 of Edmonton, Alberta, and Megan DENT, age 20 of Westbank, British Columbia, have each been charged with the following seven offences under the Criminal Code (CC) and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA):

·      Possession of proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000

·      Unauthorized possession of a firearm

·      Careless storage of a firearm

·      Possession for the purpose of trafficking – hydromorphone

·      Possession for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

·      Possession for the purpose of trafficking – crystal methamphetamine

·      Possession for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl

Both accused were remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on November 21, 2024.

Double Fatal Collision

(KENORA, ON) – Police are investigating a fatal three-vehicle collision on Highway 17 near Kenora. 

At approximately 9:00 a.m., on November 25, 2024, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Kenora Detachment, along with Kenora Fire Service and Northwest Emergency Medical Services responded to a collision between three commercial motor vehicles (CMV) on Highway 17A between Beryl Winder Road and Highway 596.

As a result, two drivers of separate CMV’s were pronounced deceased at the scene.

A third driver of a CMV, remained at the scene, reporting only minor injuries.

Highway 17A has been closed for several hours while the North West Region OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) Team is assisting with the investigation and encourages anyone with pertinent information to contact the Kenora OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

$400,000 Fentanyl Bust

(KENORA, ON) – Police have arrested and charged two individuals after a traffic stop led to the seizure of a large quantity of fentanyl with a street value of approximately $400,000.

On September 2, 2024, as a result of an investigation led by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, with assistance from the OPP Kenora Community Street Crime Unit, OPP Kenora Detachment and Treaty Three Police Service, a traffic stop was conducted in Kenora.

The two occupants in the vehicle were arrested and charged with drug-related offences.

Jashanpreet SINGH, age 20 and Karanpreet SINGH, age 23 both of Brampton have been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

The fentanyl seized is believed to have been destined for Kenora and the surrounding communities.

$100,000 Drug Bust

(Kenora, ON) – An investigation led by the Kenora Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), with assistance from the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB), Provincial Operations Intelligence Bureau (POIB) and the OPP Canine Unit executed a Search Warrant in the area of Rabbit Lake, Kenora.  As a result of this search warrant charges were laid against one individual.

On August 25th, Brendon Phillips, 34 years old, of Kenora, was arrested for weapons related offences in the area of Rabbit Lake, Kenora.

Shortly thereafter a search warrant was executed in a residence in the area of Rabbit Lake, Kenora, where a quantity of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription opioids, 4 replica pistols and items used to traffic controlled substances were seized. Estimated street value of these drugs are over $100 000.

As a result of the investigation, Brendon Phillips, has been arrested and charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substance’s Act:

  • Five counts of possession of a schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000

Amber MARKHAM – Drunk Driving

(KENORA, ON) – A traffic complaint of a suspected impaired driver has resulted in charges.

On July 11, 2024, just after 4:15 p.m., members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a suspected impaired driver on Park Street in the City of Kenora.

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle had been impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Kenora OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result, Amber MARKHAM, 32-years-old, of Kenora, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act with:

·        Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

·        Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·        Class G1 Licence Holder – Accompanying Driver B.A.C. .05 or Above

·        Class G1 Licence Holder – Unaccompanied by Qualified Driver

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on August 1, 2024.

Ashanti SKEAD – Drunk Driving

(KENORA, ON) – A R.I.D.E program in the City of Kenora has resulted in impaired operation charges.

On July 6, 2024, at approximately 2:20 a.m., members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a R.I.D.E program in the area of Railway Street. A motor vehicle entered the program, and an approved screening device was administered.  

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle had been impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Kenora OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result, Ashanti SKEAD, 28-years-old, of Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

·      Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

·      Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on July 25, 2024.

Ethan COPENACE – Impaired Driving

(KENORA, ON) – A traffic complaint has led to one individual being arrested and charged for impaired operation.  

On June 29, 2024, just after 8:30 p.m., members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a suspected impaired driver at a business on Main Street South in the City of Kenora.

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle had been impaired by drug. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported back to the Kenora OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result, Ethan COPENACE, 34-years-old, of Keewatin, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs.

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on July 25, 2024.

Terrance CHERRY – Drunk Driving

(KENORA, ON) – A traffic violation has led to one individual being arrested and charged with impaired operation.

On June 29, 2024, shortly before 3:30 a.m., members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting general patrol in the area of Lakeview Drive and initiated a traffic stop on a motor vehicle for a traffic violation.

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle had been impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported back to the Kenora OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result, Terrance CHERRY, 23-years-old, of Kenora, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

·        Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

·        Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on July 23, 2024.

Caden TREFTLIN Was Arrested

(KENORA, ON) – Proactive enforcement has led to impaired operation charges being laid.   

On June 15, 2024, just before midnight, members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting general patrol in the area of Main Street and Second Street in the City of Kenora and initiated a traffic stop on a motor vehicle.  

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Kenora OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result, Caden TREFTLIN, 19-years-old, of Winnipeg, Manitoba has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

·        Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·        Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on July 22, 2024.

Darren BOUCHA – Drunk Driving

(KENORA, ON) – A single motor vehicle collision has resulted in impaired charges.

On June 10, 2024, shortly before midnight, members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Airport Road in the City of Kenora.

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle had been impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Kenora OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result, Darren BOUCHA, 51-years-old, of Kenora has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

·        Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·        Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

·        Operation While Prohibited Under the Criminal Code

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on July 4, 2024.

There were no injuries as a result of the collision.

Anaiya BAKER Arrested Again

(KENORA, ON) – An investigation led by the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) with the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has resulted in drug trafficking charges.

On April 24, 2024, just after 3:00 p.m., members of the Kenora OPP CSCU were conducting an investigation in the area of Bernier Drive in the City of Kenora when they observed suspected drug transactions take place.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of one individual and the seizure of suspected illicit substances including fentanyl, methamphetamine, morphine, and dilaudid. Canadian currency and other items associated with drug trafficking were also seized.

As a result, Anaiya BAKER, 18-years-old, of Kenora has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with:

·      Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition for Dangerous Purpose

·      Traffick in Schedule I Substance – Opioid

·      Traffick in Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamines

·      Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Opioid – two counts

·      Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine

·      Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

·      Failure to Comply with Release Order – two counts

The accused is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on April 25, 2024.

Owen CHANG – Drug Trafficking

(KENORA, ON) – An investigation led by the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) with the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has resulted in drug trafficking charges.

On April 9, 2024, just before 12:00 p.m., members of the Kenora OPP CSCU were conducting an investigation in the area of Bernier Drive in the City of Kenora when they observed drug transactions take place.

·        Traffick in Schedule I Substance – Opioid

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora at a later date.

OPP Detachment Finally Enforced Law Over Weekend – Shocked They Caught 4 Drunk Drivers in 8 Hours

(KENORA, ON) – The Kenora Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged 4 different persons at 4 different occurrences between March 31 and April 1 2024 for impaired related offences.

On March 31, 2024, shortly after 5:30 p.m. a disturbance call on Lakeview Dr resulted in an impaired investigation by the Kenora OPP.

As a result, Tammy FRENETTE, 48-years-old, of Kenora has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

· Adult operation while impaired- alcohol and drugs

The accused with scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on April 25, 2024, to answer to the charges.

On March 31, 2024, after a report of a possible impaired driver on Whitefish Bay FN, the Kenora OPP and Treaty Three Police Service (T3PS) located the vehicle on Hwy 17E at Reddens.

Police conducted an investigation, and it was determined the driver of the vehicle was impaired.

As a result, Tamook PAYPOMPEE, 28-years-old, of Northwest Angle 33 has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

· Adult operation while impaired- alcohol and drugs

· Adult operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on April 18, 2024, to answer to the charges.

Further the Kenora OPP initiated a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program in the City of Kenora at around 1:30 a.m. on April 1, 2024.

As a result, Bradley WHITE, 39-years-old, of Shoal Lake 39 has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

· Adult operation while impaired- alcohol and drugs

· Adult operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

· Adult operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code

The accused was held pending a bail hearing where he was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on April 4, 2024, to answer to the charges.

A second driver, Danielle EVERSON, 31-years-old, of Kenora has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code (CC) the Cannabis Control Act (CCA) and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) with:

· Adult operation while impaired- alcohol and drugs (CC)

· Adult possession of a Schedule I Substance-Cocaine (CDSA)

· Adult have care or control of vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available (CCA)

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on April 25, 2024, to answer to the charges.
