Justin SCHELL – Drunk Driving

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- On Monday, August 11, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a pickup up in a ditch on Highway 129 near Feltham Road in the Municipality of Huron Shores (north of Thessalon). 

A short time later police attended the scene and while speaking to the driver police determined alcohol had been consumed. The driver was arrested and transported to Blind River detachment for further testing.

Justin SCHELL, 42 years old from Sault Ste Marie was charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – alcohol

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on September 4, 2025. The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension, and the involved vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The OPP continues to encourage the public to report motorists suspected of driving impaired by calling 9-1-1 or contacting the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Daanis NIGANABE – Drunk Driving

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- Impaired driving charges laid following single motor vehicle collision in the Town of Iron Bridge.

On Sunday, August 3, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision in the south side ditch of Chiblow Lake Road.

The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Blind River OPP Detachment for further processing.

As a result of the investigation, Daanis NIGANABE, 29 years old from Mississauga First Nation, was charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – alcohol

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Thursday, October 2, 2025. The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension, and the involved vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The OPP continues to encourage the public to report motorists suspected of driving impaired by calling 9-1-1 or contacting the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

72 Year Old Arrested For Impaired Driving

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- Trespass complaint leads to an impaired charge.

On Monday, June 2, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a trespassing complaint on Eley Road in the Town of Iron Bridge. A black vehicle had reportedly driven past a gate clearly marked with “No Trespassing” signs. The complainant also suspected the occupants of the vehicle were impaired by drugs.

The vehicle left the area and was observed a short time later traveling eastbound on Highway 17. Officers conducted a traffic stop and, upon speaking with the driver, observed signs of impairment.

The driver was arrested and transported to the Blind River OPP detachment for further testing.

Armond SCARFF, 72 years-of-age from Blind River was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – drug
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on July 3, 2025.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension, and the involved vehicle was impounded for 7days.

The OPP remains committed to ensuring our roads are safe from drug-impaired and alcohol-impaired drivers. Drivers who are impaired by drugs or alcohol continue to pose a significant threat on Ontario roads.

3 Facing Murder Charges

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON) – Three individuals have been charged in relation to a residential fire investigation from February 6, 2023.

On February 6, 2023, at approximately 9:00 a.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Mississauga First Nation Police Service and the Huron Shores Fire Department responded to a suspicious fire to a residence and a vehicle on Mississagi Bay Road. The remains of 51-year-old Dwayne KOZUCH were recovered in the residence.  

The East Algoma OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, continued the investigation, with assistance from the OPP’s Forensic Identification Services Unit in conjunction with the Office of the Fire Marshal and the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

On January 9, 2025, the OPP arrested and charged three individuals with offences contrary to the Criminal Code.

Nathaniel BATES, 28 years-old from Blind River was charged with:

  • First degree murder, section 235(1)
  • Arson-disregard for human life, section 433(a)
  • Arson-damage to property, section 434

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on February 6, 2025.

Lindsay RIETZE, 28 years-old from Blind River was charged with:

  • First degree murder, section 235(1)
  • Arson-disregard for human life, section 433(a)
  • Arson-damage to property, section 434

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on February 6, 2025.

Amanda SOUM, 42 years-old from Blind River was charged with:

  • Accessory after the fact to murder, section 240
  • Arson-disregard for human life, section 433(a)
  • Arson-damage to property, section 434

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on January 10, 2025.

Thieves Arrested – SCHELL & MATTIEU

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- Police catch thieves in the act at Railway Business.

On December 26, 2024, at around 8:30 p.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an abandoned dump trailer that had been parked overnight near metal railway ties and appeared to be stuck on Green Lane Road east of the Town of Thessalon.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., officers arrived at the driveway of a railway business and observed a pick-up truck attempting to retrieve the trailer. Upon inspection, police discovered that the trailer, which was covered, contained a significant amount of cut metal railway ties. In the back of the pick-up truck, beneath a blanket, officers seized a 20-volt battery-powered grinder, black and yellow in color, equipped with a used cutoff wheel.

Michael SCHELL, 38 years-old from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Theft under $5000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Possession break in instruments

Dorothy MATTIEU, 29 years-old from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Theft under $5000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Possession break in instruments

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on February 6, 2025.

Annarae JARRATT – Drunk Driving

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON) – East Algoma OPP lays 46th impaired charge in 2024.

On November 2, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver travelling westbound on Causley Street through the Town of Blind River. 

At approximately 8:20 p.m., police located the suspect pick-up truck east of the Town of Iron Bridge and initiated a traffic stop. While speaking to the driver police determined alcohol had been consumed and an arrest was made. The driver was then transported to Thessalon detachment for further testing.

As a result, Annarae JARRATT, 43 years-of-age from Thessalon was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on December 5, 2024.

The pick-up truck was towed and impounded for seven days with the driver being issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension.

Hamza Suleiman JAMA Was Arrested

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- On September 18, 2024, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a weapons call involving an eastbound white SUV that had fired gunshots at another unknown vehicle on Highway 17 west of the Town of Iron Bridge.

The shooting incident had occurred 45 minutes prior to 3:15 p.m., resulting in the white SUV fleeing the scene and travelling eastbound on Highway 17. Later, the Manitoulin OPP observed the suspect SUV travelling eastbound on Highway 17 near the Town of Massey. At approximately 3:45 p.m., Manitoulin OPP initiated a traffic stop on Highway 17 near Mary Street in the Town of Webbwood. OPP and APS conducted a High Risk take down and arrested the SUV driver and passenger.

Both individuals, and the vehicle were searched with police seizing Canadian currency in the amount of $272 from the driver, $3000 from the passenger and $100,000 in the vehicle, three cell phones, a small amount of cannabis marihuana, drug paraphernalia as well as the SUV. 

As a result, the driver, Hamza Suleiman JAMA, 27 years-of-age from Brampton was charged with:

  • Failure to comply with release order-other that to attend court
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Espanola on September 19, 2024, and was remanded into custody.

The investigation is continuing.

Stolen Trailer Recovered – Two Arrested

(HURON SHORES, ON) – The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested two people for having a stolen trailer on Highway 17.

On September 5, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m. the complainant reported following a white pickup truck towing trailer on Highway 17, Huron Shores. They were travelling eastbound, and the trailer was recognized by the complainant as it was stolen over a year ago from Sault Ste Marie.

Police conducted a traffic stop and it was in fact the complainant’s trailer. Both occupants of the pickup truck were subsequently arrested.  

Thomas BOSTON, 62-years-old, of Sault Ste Marie, was charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Draw trailer, no permit
  • Draw trailer, no plate

Randy BENNETT, 67-years-old, of Sault Ste Marie, was charged with – Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000

Both accused persons are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on November 7, 2024.

Jean Guy PILON – Drunk Driving

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- The East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) lays 36th impaired charged in 2024.

On August 26, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the OPP responded to a traffic complaint involving an eastbound blue pick-up truck swerving all over the road, travelling at varying speeds and had struck some construction pilons near Beaton Road and Highway 17 in the Iron Bridge area.

A short time later, police located the suspect vehicle parked at a house on Pearson Drive in the Town of Blind River. Police observed a travel trailer on the property that appeared to be occupied and called out to the registered owner of the truck. Police established the person they were conversing with was in fact the driver from the traffic complaint. As the conversation continued, the officer determined alcohol had been consumed and a subsequent arrest was made. The driver was transported to Blind River detachment for further testing and the pick-up truck was later impounded for seven days.

As a result, Jean Guy PILON, 63 years-of-age from Blind River was charged with: 

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Drive motor vehicle, no permit
  • Fail to surrender insurance card

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on October 3, 2024.

Kulwinder SINGH Was Arrested – Meth A Factor

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- Small car with extensive damage was stolen from Edmonton.

On August 16, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to suspicious vehicle/driver that pulled into a driveway of a local business on Highway 17 in the Town of Iron Bridge.  

The car had left in an eastbound direction on Highway 17 and was later travelling 40 kph in a 70 kph zone on Causley Street in Town of Blind River with police initiating a traffic stop.

A query revealed the car was stolen and the driver was subsequently arrested. The North East Canine Unit assist with the search of the vehicle and located over three grams of suspected crystal meth (estimated street value of $300).

As a result, Kulwinder SINGH, 29 years-of-age from Winnipeg was charged with:

  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
  • Possession of a schedule I substance-methamphetamine

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on October 3, 2024.

Edmonton Police Service were notified that the vehicle was recovered in Blind River.

Robin HURON Charged Following Collision

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)– Collision involving two water vessels on the Mississagi River.

On July 21, 2024, shortly after 1:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Algoma Paramedic services responded to a collision involving two boats on the Mississagi River near a boat launch south of Mississaugi Crescent and Glen Street in the Town of Iron Bridge.

Investigation determined four youths had launched their boat and were struck by a larger westbound boat. The four youths suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The smaller water vessel was total beyond repair and the larger was severely damaged.  

As a result, Robin HURON, 74 years-of-age from Iron Bridge was charged and issued two provincial offence notices:

  • Operating vessel in a careless manner, without reasonable consideration for other persons
  • Operator of a pleasure craft failing to take all reasonable steps to ensure safety of craft and persons on board
