KNUFF – Impaired Operation

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person has been charged after they were arrested for impaired operation at a Reduced Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check.

On January 11, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE check at the intersection of Barber Street and Queensway Avenue in the town of Espanola. A vehicle went through the RIDE, and police determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance. Further testing on scene resulted in the driver being arrested for impaired operation.

As a result, the driver, David KNUFF, 62-years-old from Espanola, was charged with operation while impaired – drugs.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on March 10, 2025.

TREMBLAY Facing Charges

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person is facing charges after they rear-ended another vehicle.

On January 5, 2025, at approximately 11:00 am., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision, where a person was rear-ended by a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) on Highway 17 in the town of Walden. During their interaction with the driver, police determined that an intoxicating substance had been consumed. A subsequent arrest was made, and the driver was transported to the Espanola detachment for further testing.

No injuries were sustained.

As a result, the driver, Chelsea TREMBLAY, 25-years-old from Markstay, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – drugs
  • Dangerous operation
  • Driving while under suspension – two counts

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on February 3, 2025.

Sabrina MISHIBINIJIMA Was Arrested

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person has been arrested and charged after a traffic stop in Espanola.

On December 31, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a sobriety check. During the stop, police detected an odour of cannabis emanating from the vehicle. As a result of the investigation, the driver was arrested for impaired operation.

Additionally, a search of the vehicle resulted in police seizing approximately 50 suspected hydromorphone pills, with an estimated street value of $130, and approximately 0.5g of suspected crack cocaine, with an estimated street value of $75.

As a result, the driver, Sabrina MISHIBINIJIMA, 38-years-old from Wikwemikong, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood drug concentration
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance – other drugs
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on February 3, 2025.

Steven MCGUIRE Facing Drug Charges

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person is facing impaired and drug charges after they went through a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check.

On January 4, 2025, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE check on Highway 6 at Old Webbwood Road in the Baldwin Township. A vehicle entered the RIDE check area, and police determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance. An arrest was made, and the driver was transported to the Espanola detachment for further testing.

Additionally, a search of the vehicle resulted in police seizing approximately one gram of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $100, approximately one gram of suspected crack cocaine, with an estimated street value of $150, approximately 70g of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $7,000, and approximately $3,500 in Canadian currency.

As a result, the driver, Steven MCGUIRE, 58-years-old from Levack, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – drugs
  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – methamphetamine
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Fail to properly wear seat belt
  • Obstruct plate
  • Operate unsafe vehicle

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on February 3, 2025.

Hwy 17 Drug Bust – Name Released

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person has been arrested and is facing several charges following a traffic stop on Highway 17, Baldwin Township.

On December 23, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle observed driving on Highway 17 with no rear lights on. The vehicle driver provided police with a false name and was arrested. Further investigation led to the driver being arrested for impaired operation.

A search of the vehicle and the driver resulted in police locating and seizing approximately 25g of fentanyl with an estimated street value of $7,500, approximately 1.5g of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $150, methamphetamine tablets and Canadian currency.

As a result, the driver, Lynda TROTTIER, 36-years-old from Webbwood, was charged with:

  • Personation with intent
  • Obstruct peace officer
  • Operation while impaired – drugs
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – methamphetamine – two counts
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – other drugs
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 – in Canada
  • Drive without proper rear light – motor vehicle
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Fail to comply with probation order

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on February 3, 2025.

2 Located After House Fire

(ESPANOLA, ON) – Two people are safe following a house fire in Espanola.

On December 20, 2024, at approximately 12:00 a.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with the Espanola Fire Department, responded to a house fire on Mead Boulevard in Espanola. Two people were able to escape the from the house and were transported to a local hospital by Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation into the circumstances of the fire revealed it to be non-suspicious.

Connor BOUILLON Was Arrested

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person has been charged with impaired operation as a result of a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check on Highway 6 in Espanola.

On December 7, 2024, at approximately 12:00 a.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting a RIDE check on Highway 6 in Espanola. A vehicle came through the RIDE, and officers detected an odour of alcohol coming from the driver. Further testing on scene resulted in the driver being arrested for impaired operation.

As a result, the driver, Connor BOUILLON, 23-years-old from Espanola, was charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – alcohol

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

·      Fail to surrender licence

·      Fail to surrender insurance card

·      No mudguards

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on January 6, 2025.

Stolen Vehicle Recovered – Alexander FOURNIER Arrested

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person has been charged, and a stolen vehicle located following a single vehicle collision on Lee Valley Road in the Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

On November 30, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to reports of a pickup truck in the ditch on Lee Valley Road. Officers on scene discovered that the pickup truck involved in the collision was stolen.

As a result, the driver, Alexander FOURNIER, 31-years-old from Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, has been charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Drive motor vehicle – no licence
  • Careless driving

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on January 6, 2025.

Cocaine Bust – KITENGE

(ESPANOLA, ON) – Two people have been charged with drug related offences following a traffic stop on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township.

On November 24, 2024, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting general patrol on Highway 17. A vehicle was observed driving past them with no front plate. A traffic stop was conducted and there were two occupants in the vehicle. A check of the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) revealed that the licence plate on the rear of the vehicle was not authorized for that vehicle. Further investigation led to the driver and passenger being arrested.

Additionally, police seized over 50g of suspect cocaine, with an estimated street value of $5,000, and drug paraphernalia.

As a result, the driver, Charles KITENGE, 22-years-old from Espanola, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle
  • Fail to surrender insurance card
  • Fail to display two plates
  • Drive motor vehicle with liquor readily available
  • Drive motor vehicle with cannabis readily available

The passenger, Mahaylia DAIGLE, 21-years-old of no fixed address, was charged with possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine.

Both accused individuals are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on January 6, 2024.

Merek MANNINEN Arrested After Calling Police on Themself

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person has been arrested and charged after they called police to report their location following a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver. 

On November 23, 2024, at approximately 4:30 a.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a traffic complaint in the area of Wood Street, Espanola regarding a possible impaired driver. Shortly after, the driver called police to report their location. Police attended the location provided, and further testing on scene resulted in the driver being arrested for impaired operation.

As a result, the driver, Merek MANNINEN, 24-years-old from Espanola, was charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – alcohol

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The driver’s licence was suspended, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on January 6, 2025.

Raymond YOUNG – Impaired Operation

(ESPANOLA, ON) – The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) assisted the Anishinabek Police Service (APS) with an impaired investigation which resulted in one person being arrested and charged.

On November 2, 2024 at approximately 1:30 p.m., APS officers located a driver passed out in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck. The driver was subsequently arrested and upon further investigation, officers located suspected crack cocaine. An OPP Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) assisted with the investigation for further testing.

As a result, the driver, Raymond YOUNG, 33-years-old from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired
  • Possession of Schedule I Substance

The pickup truck was towed and impounded for seven days, and the driver’s licence was suspended.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on December 2, 2024.

Drug Bust @ RIDE

(ESPANOLA, ON) – Two people have been arrested and charged following a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check, which led to the seizure of a large amount of cannabis.

On November 19, 2024, at approximately 12:45 a.m., The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE check on Highway 6 near Espanola. A vehicle approached officers, and police noticed an odour of cannabis coming from the vehicle. Further investigation resulted in two people being arrested.

Additionally, officers located over 12kg of dried cannabis, with a street value of approximately $41,200, over 140 packages of cannabis gummies with a street value of approximately $5,800, 50 cannabis vape pen cartridges with a street value of approximately $2,000 and over 10g of suspected cocaine, with a street value of approximately $1,000, and Canadian currency.

As a result, the driver, Edward SMAGALA, 58-years-old from Annan, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – cocaine
  • Possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling
  • Possession for the purpose of distributing
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000

The passenger, Hao Dong LIANG, 33-years-old from Markham, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – cocaine
  • Possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling
  • Possession for the purpose of distributing
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000

Both accused were held in custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sudbury on November 19, 2024.

Ashley JACKO-METANSININE Facing Numerous Charges

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person has been arrested and charged for impaired operation and drug related charges following a traffic complaint on Highway 17 near Nairn Centre.

On November 9, 2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a traffic complaint involving a pickup truck on Highway 17 near Nairn Centre.

Police located the pickup truck on Jacklin Road in the Town of Espanola and conducted a traffic stop. While speaking to the driver police determined alcohol had been consumed and the driver was transported to the McKerrow detachment for further testing.

Additionally, officers located over 660 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $66,000, and three suspected oxycodone pills with an estimated street value of $45.

As a result, the driver, Ashley JACKO-METANSININE, 30-years-old from Wikwemikong, was charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – drugs

·      Possession of a Schedule I substance – opioid (other than heroine)

·      Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

·      Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000

·      Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000

·      Drive motor vehicle with liquor readily available

·      Drive motor vehicle, fail to display two plates

·      Drive motor vehicle, no permit

·      Operate a motor vehicle without insurance

Ashley JACKO-METANSININE appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sudbury on November 10, 2024, and was remanded into custody.

Kieran NAHMIWAN Was Arrested Again

(ESPANOLA, ON) – One person has been arrested and is facing several charges following a traffic complaint about the dangerous operation of a vehicle on Highway 6 near Espanola.

On November 7, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received traffic complaints reporting that a vehicle was driving dangerously at a high rate of speed on Highway 6, near the Town of Espanola.

Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on Highway 6.  A query revealed the driver had an outstanding warrant and was arrested. While speaking to the driver police determined alcohol had been consumed and the driver was transported to Little Current detachment for further testing.

Additionally, officers located over 12 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,200, and imitation brass knuckles.  

As a result, the driver, Kieran NAHMIWAN, 30-years-old from Wikwemikong, was charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – alcohol

·      Possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine

·      Failure to comply with undertaking – two counts

·      Failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court

·      Dangerous operation

·      Fail to stop for police

·      Drive vehicle with cannabis in open baggage

·      Novice driver – B.A.C above zero

The accused is scheduled to appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on December 4, 2024.

Darren OWL Facing Numerous Charges

(ESPANOLA, ON) – A Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) has resulted in one male being charged with impaired operation and drug related charges.

On November 6, 2024, at approximately 1:45 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE check on Lee Valley Road, Sables-Spanish Rivers Township. A pickup truck went through the RIDE and officers noticed the male driver to be exhibiting signs of impairment. Further investigation led to the male driver being arrested for driving while under suspension. The driver was transported to the McKerrow OPP detachment for further testing, which determined that he was impaired by drug.

Additionally, officers located over .5 grams of suspected crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $115, over 11 grams of suspected fentanyl with an estimated street value of $3,400, over 20 capsules of suspected psilocybin and over 41 grams of psilocybin mushrooms with an estimated street value of $600.

As a result, the driver, Darren OWL, 31-years-old from Espanola, was charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – drugs

·      Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – opioid (other than heroin)

·      Possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine

·      Possession of a Schedule III substance for the purpose of trafficking

·      Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000

·      Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit

·      Driving while under suspension

·      Improper tires

·      Operate a motor vehicle without insurance

·      Operate unsafe vehicle

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on December 2, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.
