Fatal Collision

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a fatal collision on Highway 101, near Chapleau.

On March 17, 2025, approximately 11:40 a.m., the Superior East OPP and Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic responded to a two-vehicle collision involving a motorized snow vehicle on Highway 101 at Adam Lake Road, approximately 30 kilometers, east of Chapleau.

As a result of the collision, one person, 59 years-old, of Tiny Township, died at the scene.

The investigation is on-going with the assistance of the Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team.

The highway was closed for six hours.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.

Jordan SMITH Was Arrested

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – On January 17, 2025, at approximately 5:00 a.m., the Chapleau Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an abandoned stolen vehicle on Lafreniere Road, in Chapleau Township. While responding to the call, officers were alerted of a second stolen vehicle   in the same area.

The officers located the second stolen vehicle a short distance away with the suspect in the driver’s seat. 

As a result of the investigation, Jordan SMITH, 35-years-old from Kingston, was arrested and charged with:

·        Possession property obtained by crime over $5,000

·        Theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle

·        Operation while impaired – drugs

·        Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  in Chapleau on February 12, 2025.

BOUCHER – Impaired Driving

(Chapleau, ON) – One person was arrested and charged after police responded to a single motor vehicle collision in the ditch.

On December 11, 2024, at approximately 1:55 a.m., the Superior East Chapleau Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 101, Chewit Township, East of Chapleau.

The OPP arrived a short time later and while speaking to the driver police determined the driver had consumed an alcoholic beverage. The driver was transported to the Chapleau Detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, David BOUCHER, 51 years-of-age, from Timmins, was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Chapleau on January 13, 2025

2 Arrested After Attempting To Use Fake ID

(CHAPLEAU AND WAWA, ON) – The Superior East Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged two suspects in relation to using fake identification at local businesses.

On December 12, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., two people attempted to use false identification (ID) at a local business in the Town of Chapleau. The couple had fled the scene prior to police arrival. The next day on December 13, 2024, at approximately 11:00 a.m., the OPP located the suspects attempting to use false ID again at another business in the Town of Wawa. Police searched the suspects and seized 20 – 25 pieces of false identification each.

As a result of the investigation, Cynthia RACINE, age 41 of Lac Superior, Quebec, was charged with:

·        Identity Theft – obtain or possess another person’s identity information – twenty-one counts

·        Personation with Intent – intent to obtain property (identity fraud) – two counts

·        Possession of a forged document with intent

And, Stephane GALAREAU, age 48 of Laval, Quebec was charged with:

·        Identity Theft – obtain or possess another person’s identity information – twenty-five counts

·        Personation with Intent – intent to obtain property (identity fraud) – two counts

·        Fail to Comply with Probation Order – five counts

·        Possession of a forged document with intent

Both accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sudbury on December 14, 2024.

Michelle MARTINEAU – Trafficking

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – OPP Community Street Crime Unit executes search warrant.

On October 16, 2024, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit executed a search warrant at a residence on Martel Road in the Town of Chapleau.

Police located and seized:

  • Over 13 grams of suspected cocaine
  • Over 9 grams of suspected fentanyl
  • Over 17 grams of suspected methamphetamine
  • Under 1 gram of suspected crack cocaine $100
  • Drug paraphernalia (packaging material, two digital scales and a cellphone)

Total estimated street value of drugs is $3200.

As a result of the investigation, Michelle MARTINEAU, 30 years-of-age from Chapleau was charged with:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking-cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking-methamphetamine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking-opioid (other than heroin)
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice-Bail Court in Chapleau on October 17, 2024.

Tyrone TANGIE Was Arrested

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – One person is facing a criminal charge after sending threatening messages over social media. On April 9, 2024, shortly before 11:00 p.m., the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a threats occurrence on Martel Road in Chapleau.

As a result of the investigation, Tyrone TANGIE, 24 years-of-age, of Brunswick House First Nation was arrested and charged with one count of Uttering Threats to cause bodily harm.        

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on May 13, 2024 in Chapleau.

Spouse Assaulted With Weapon

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – A Chapleau resident is facing criminal charges as a result of a sexual assault investigation. On March 23, 2024, shortly after 4:00 p.m., the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic disturbance on Pine Park Road in Chapleau.

As a result of the investigation, a 52-year-old person from Chapleau was arrested and charged with:

  • Sexual Assault
  • Assault with a Weapon – Spousal
  • Assault – Spousal
  • Uttering Threats to Cause Death – Spousal

The accused was held for a bail hearing, and remanded into custody. Due to the domestic nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.

Darryl HIGHAM Arrested

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – One person is facing criminal charges after causing a disturbance at a residence in Chapleau. On February 22, 2024, shortly before 3:00 p.m., the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a threats occurrence on Pine Street.

As a result of the investigation, Darryl HIGHAM, 36 years-of-age, of Cloyne, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Mischief       

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 16, 2024 in Chapleau.
