Fatal Collision Update – Charges Laid

(TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON, ON) – On August 1, 2021, at approximately 9:50 p.m. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded along with Centre Wellington Fire and Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Services to a serious two motor vehicle collision on Wellington Road 21 near the Eighth Line of Centre Wellington Township.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a coupe was travelling westbound on Wellington Road 21 when it collided with an eastbound sport utility vehicle (SUV). Brian ARAUJO, 25-years-old of Kitchener was a passenger in the coupe and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other occupants from the same vehicle were transported to a trauma hospital with serious injuries. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Ricardo Francisco CRUZ ABREGO, 24-years-old of Kitchener has been charged with Dangerous Operation Causing Death, Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm X2 contrary to the Criminal Code and Drive While Under Suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on August 31, 2021 to answer to the charges.

Wellington County OPP and OPP Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) continue to investigate the collision.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

The cause of the collision is currently being investigated by Wellington County OPP and OPP Technical Collision Investigators (TCI). Wellington Road 21 remains closed between the Eighth Line and Sixth Line for the investigation.

Drunk Driver Rolls Vehicle – Blair WILSON

(BRANT TWP, ON) – On July 15, 2021 at 8:14 a.m., the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a single vehicle collision along Bruce County Road 2 in Brant Township. Officers attended with members of the Walkerton Fire Department and Bruce County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to find the vehicle had rolled before coming to rest in the ditch. 

As a result of the investigation, officers learned that the vehicle had struck a pedestrian before leaving the roadway. The pedestrian had non-life threatening injuries treated at a local hospital.

Blair WILSON, 39-years-old, of Kinloss Township, was charged with Impaired Driving, Operate over 80 milligrams, Dangerous Driving, Fail to Stop after Accident, Drive while under Suspension and Fail to wear Seatbelt. The accused is scheduled to appear in court on September 1, 2021 to answer to the charges.

Racing Charge Near Clinton

(HURON EAST, ON) – A young driver from Central Huron will be making a trip to court later this summer following a traffic stop conducted by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) earlier this month. 

On July 17, 2021 at approximately 9:20 p.m. a Huron County OPP officer was patrolling on London Road just south of Clinton when the officer observed a compact vehicle travelling northbound at a high rate of speed. A RADAR device was utilized to measure the speed of the vehicle at a rate in excess of 140 km/h in the posted 80 km/h zone. 

A traffic stop was initiated and the driver was subsequently charged. Aiden DI FONZO, 18 years of age, from Central Huron has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle Perform a Stunt – Excessive Speed. A court date has been scheduled for August 24, 2021 at Provincial Offences Court – Goderich. The defendant’s motor vehicle was seized and impounded, as well, an automatic 7-day driver’s licence suspension was served on the driver.

64 Year Old From Blyth Caught Going 50+ Over Speed Limit

(MORRIS-TURNBERRY, ON) – A resident of Blyth has been charged under the Stunt Driving legislation after getting stopped yesterday by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Shortly before 10:00 a.m. on July 28, 2021 a Huron OPP officer was patrolling southbound on London Road when a pickup truck was observed passing a car a high rate of speed travelling northbound. A RADAR device was used to measure the speed of the vehicle at a rate in excess of 50 km/h over the posted 90 km/h zone. 

A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was subsequently charged. Michael WALSH, 64 years of age, from Blyth has been charged with Race a Motor Vehicle – Speeding by 50 km/h or more. The defendant will now have to attend court on September 21, 2021 at Provincial Offences Court in Goderich to answer to the charge. 

A seven day driver’s licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment is now in effect.

Exeter Methamphetamine Bust – Christopher MURCH

(SOUTH HURON, ON) – An Exeter resident has been charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and other criminal charges following an investigation conducted last week by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). 

On July 21, 2021 at approximately 1:30 p.m. members of the Huron OPP Community Street Crimes Unit (CSCU) observed the suspect walking on William Street in Exeter with drug paraphernalia. Upon stopping the accused officers formed grounds to arrest the accused for possession of a drug. A search incident to arrest resulted in police locating a quantity of suspected methamphetamine, a stolen health card and two knives.   

Further checks revealed the accused is currently prohibited from possessing weapons. 

Christopher MURCH, 40 years of age, from Exeter has been charged with Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamine, Failure to Comply with a Release Order and Possession of an Identity Document. The accused has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for August 9, 2021 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

TASER Used To Stop Richard HAYS – Stolen Vehicle Recovered

(HOWICK, ON) – A Huron County resident remains in custody on four criminal charges following an arrest made by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) last weekend.

On Friday, July 23, 2021 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Huron OPP officers received information about a possible stolen vehicle located at a property located on Belmore Line. OPP officers responded to the property whereupon they located the accused with a pickup truck stolen from Stratford. 

Officers informed the accused he was under arrest and at that point he began to resist the officers and tried to break free. A conducted energy weapon was utilized and the accused was ultimately taken into custody. 

Further investigation revealed that earlier that day the accused stole gas from a gas station located in Amberley. As well, the accused was driving while he was bound by a court ordered driving prohibition.  

Richard HAYS, 36 years of age from Huron County has been charged with:

·        Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

·        Theft Under $5,000

·        Resist Peace Officer

·        Operation While Prohibited

The accused remains in custody with a court appearance scheduled for July 29, 2021 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

Assault With Weapon – Listowel Resident Arrested

(NORTH PERTH, ON) – On July 22, 2021 just after 7:00 p.m., the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an altercation on Elizabeth Street in the Municipality of North Perth.

Police spoke with the victim, and an investigation revealed an assault had been committed. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Reggie MCISAAC, a 35-year-old resident of Listowel, was later arrested and charged with:

–       Assault with a Weapon

–       Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Stratford at a later date to answer to the charge.

Driver Caught Going 140 in an 80 Near Vanastra

(HURON EAST, ON) – A London resident had to hire a taxi to get to their destination after police seized their vehicle for Racing earlier this month. 

On July 16, 2021 at approximately 6:52 a.m. a Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was patrolling on London Road south of Vanastra when the officer observed a sport utility vehicle travelling northbound at a high rate of speed. A RADAR device was utilized to measure the speed of the vehicle at a rate in excess of 140 km/h in the posted 80 km/h zone. 

A traffic stop was initiated and the driver was subsequently charged. Nina OCHS, 40 years of age, from London has been charged with Race a Motor Vehicle – Excessive Speed. A court date has been scheduled for August 24, 2021 at Provincial Offences Court – Goderich. The defendant’s motor vehicle was seized and impounded for the week, as well, an automatic 7-day driver’s licence suspension was served on the driver.

Michael PETRENKO – Drunk Driving

(BLUEWATER, ON) – A concerned citizen’s call about a possible impaired driver resulted in police arresting and charging a London resident with Impaired Operation earlier this week. 

On July 26, 2021 at about 1:30 p.m. Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call about a possible impaired driver that was last seen travelling on Zurich-Hensall Road. Officers began patrolling the area for the suspect vehicle and approximately 45 minutes later police located the suspect vehicle parked on Campbell Avenue in St. Joseph. Officers approached the vehicle and noticed the driver was sleeping inside.   

Officers were able to wake the driver and upon speaking with him the investigating officer made some observations that the driver was impaired by alcohol. As a result the driver was placed under arrest and was taken into custody. 

The driver was then transported to the Huron OPP Detachment for further testing. Two samples of breath were later provided to the Intoxilizer Technician and both tests were found to be above the legal limit.

Michael PETRENKO, 67 years of age, from London has been charged with Operation While Impaired and Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) 80 Plus. The accused was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for August 16, 2021 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

An automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension has been served on the driver and his vehicle was impounded.

E-Bike Stolen From Walkerton

(WALKERTON, ON) – On July 21, 2021 at 3:33 p.m., the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a theft report from a residence along John Street in Walkerton. Sometime between 1:00 a.m. on July 21, 2021 and 7:30 a.m. on July 21, 2021, a Black E-Bike, with White Lightning Bolts, was taken. The value of the stolen E-Bike is estimated to be $2,000.

Birgit RAPELJE Arrested Again – Theft

(ELDERSLIE TWP, ON) – On July 22, 2021 at 4:53 a.m., the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a theft report from a residence along Bruce County Road 40 in Elderslie Township. Officers arrived and learned the property owner had interrupted 2 individuals stealing fuel.

As a result of the police investigation, an arrest has been made.

Birgit RAPELJE, 52-years-old, of Arran Township was charged with Theft under $5,000 and Fail to Comply with Release Order. The accused is scheduled to appear in court on July 28, 2021 to answer to the charges.

Nicholas BERNIER – Drunk Driving

(SOUTH HURON, ON) – A Sarnia resident will be making a trip back to Huron County later this summer for a court date following an investigation conducted by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) last week.

On Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at approximately 10:34 p.m. a Huron County OPP officer was conducting RADAR enforcement on Bluewater Veteran’s Highway just north of Grand Bend when a vehicle travelling southbound was observed speeding well over the speed limit.

A traffic stop was initiated and while speaking with the driver officers noted open alcohol inside the vehicle. Additionally some observations were made that the driver had been drinking alcohol. As such a roadside screening test was conducted and the driver registered a fail. The driver was placed under arrest and was transported to the Grand Bend OPP Detachment for breath tests. Two samples of breath were later provided to the Intoxilizer Technician and both tests were found to be above the legal limit.

Nicholas BERNIER, 27 years of age from Sarnia has been charged with Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) 80 Plus. The accused has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for August 30, 2021 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

Teen Arrested After Crashing Into Bush

(HURON EAST, ON) – A concerned citizen’s call to police about a possible impaired driver resulted in police arresting and charging a young driver with several driving offences.

On July 17, 2021 at approximately 7:17 p.m. Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call about a possible impaired driver operating a pickup truck near the G2G Trail off of McNabb Line. Officers responded to the area and upon arrival they located the pickup truck crashed into a bush off of McNabb Line. 

Upon speaking with the driver the investigating officer noted several signs of impairment thus the accused was arrested for Impaired Operation. The driver was then transported to the Huron OPP Detachment for further testing. Two samples of breath were later provided to the Intoxilizer Technician and both tests were found to be above the legal limit.

Mackenzie SANFORD, 19 years of age, from Field, ON has been charged with Operation While Impaired, Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) 80 Plus, Drive Motor Vehicle with Liquor Readily Available, Novice Driver BAC Above Zero & Young Driver BAC Above Zero. The accused has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for August 30, 2021 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

$10,000 Damage To Hay Bales

(GEORGIAN BLUFFS TWP, ON) – On July 22, 2021 at 9:33 a.m., the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police received a report of a mischief at a property along Concession 21 in Georgian Bluffs Township. Sometime during the late evening of July 20, 2021 or the early morning hours of July 21, 2021, the wrap was cut on approximately 100 bales of hay.

The value of the damage is estimated to be $10,000, but the amount will be higher if this act of mischief results in crop spoilage.
