On May 27, 2014 at 6:20 p.m., the Guelph Police, Guelph Fire and Guelph Wellington EMS went to a Southgate Drive business for a workplace accident investigation. A female employee operating a heated press had one of her arms caught inside the machine. Her injury is considered severe and she was airlifted to Hamilton.
The Ministry of Labour was advised and is investigating.
On May 27, 2014 at 8:03 a.m., the Guelph Police went to the Humane Society located on Wellington Street West to investigate a break and enter. A front window was smashed sometime overnight and entry gained. There is no theft reported.

The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man in connection with a break and enter in Chatham.
In December 2013, police responded to a break and enter at a residence on Joseph Street. The victim reported that the suspect(s) forced their way into his home causing about $500 damage. Once inside the suspect(s) stole various electronics valued at approximately $3000 and cash. The scene was examined and evidence was seized for forensic analysis.
In March 2014, police received information from The Centre of Forensic Sciences stating that a DNA profile was generated and matched that of a local man. Officers attempted to locate the man, however when unsuccessful, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Yesterday morning, officers located the man on King Street West and he was arrested. Eric Dutcher, 27 years, of Queen Street in Chatham has been charged with break and enter. He was released from custody with conditions pending a future court date.
The Chatham-Kent police are seeking the public’s assistance regarding a mischief investigation.
Sometime this past week, unknown suspect(s) damaged the industrial air conditioner at the Active Lifestyle Center on Merritt Avenue. Damage has been estimated at $10,000.

Around 8:45 a.m. yesterday morning, police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on River Line near Scane Road.
The driver lost control of her vehicle, left the roadway and struck a traffic sign. Damage was estimated at $2000.
The 18-year-old Howard Township woman was charged with careless driving.

As previously reported, the Barrie Police Service Street Crime Drug Unit has been investigating the trafficking of Fentanyl. A medical secretary was fraudulently creating prescriptions for complicit individuals who allowed their identity and health card numbers to be used.
Also previously reported was the fact that the medical secretary in question has entered a plea of guilt and received a 9 year sentence.
The investigation has continued and the Street Crime Drug Unit has arrested 8 further individuals and laid a total of 72 further charges which allege the possession and uttering of forged documents in addition to possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled substance.
At present 11 further individuals are being sought for their involvement in this matter.

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service will be hosting a Women-Only Information Session and PREP Test workshop on the OACP Constable Selection Process for women interested in a policing career.
The session is designed to educate potential candidates about the Constable Selection Process. The practice sessions will also give the participants an opportunity to see if they can meet the physical requirements of the job.
The session will be held on Sunday, June 15, 2014 between 9 am to 1 pm at Algonquin College Woodroffe Campus, P building, 1385 Woodroffe Avenue.

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit is investigating two separate convenience store robberies in south Ottawa.
On May 15, 2014, at approximately 8:00 pm, a lone male entered a convenience store situated along the 2300 block of St. Andrew St. in North Gower. The suspect, armed with a knife, approached a store employee and made a demand for money. The suspect obtained an undisclosed quantity of cash and left the store. There were no injuries.
On May 20, 2014, at approximately 5:10 pm, the same lone male entered a convenience store situated along the 5500 block of Osgoode Main St in Osgoode. The suspect, armed with a knife, approached a store employee and made a demand for money. The suspect obtained an undisclosed quantity of cash and left the store. There were no injuries. The suspect fled to what is described as a possibly being a gold coloured Nissan Altima. The victim of the robbery followed the suspect out of the store and repeatedly struck the passenger side windshield of the vehicle causing significant damage to the windshield.
The suspect is described as being a Caucasian male, 40-50 years of age, 6’0â€(183cm)- 6’4â€(193cm) tall, medium build with a potbelly, medium length “salt & pepper†coloured hair and English speaking. On both occasions he wore a light coloured baseball cap with an oval shaped logo on the front (see attached images).
The extent of damage to the windshield would necessitate it being repaired. Anyone with information about a repair, on a vehicle as described, is asked to contact Police.

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service is investigating a sexual assault that occurred on a green space between Claridge Drive and Longfields Drive in Barrhaven.
On May 27, 2014 at approximately 2:00am, a 19-year-old female was walking alone when she was approached by two males and sexually assaulted. The victim was able to run away from her attackers. Residents of the area heard a commotion and called 911.
Responding officers did not locate the male suspects, who had fled the scene.
The males are described as Caucasian, mid 20’s, wearing baggy pants possibly driving a small vehicle.

(Ottawa) On Thursday, May 22 2014, Ottawa Police Service East District investigators charged two men with damaging political electoral signs.
In the early morning hours of May 22, two men were walking in the Southmore Drive/McCarthy Road area and lit several signs on fire belonging to an election’s candidate.
A witness called Police and Fire and the two men were seen fleeing the scene by attending Ottawa Fire Fighters. Police officers attended the area and arrested both men.
Thomas WALLIS, 19 years old, of Ottawa and Grayden DREW, 18 years old, of Ottawa, have both been charged with one count of Mischief to property. They were released on a Promise to Appear.
Police investigators have determined that there is no indication that WALLIS or DREW were targeting any particular political party; and this appears to be a random act.
Ottawa Police would like to remind the public that the damaging of political signs is a criminal offense.

Stratford – On September 23, 2013, Stratford City Council passed an amendment to its smoke-free bylaw to make outdoor spaces no-smoking zones. With the spring season now here, the Health Unit and Stratford City Council would like to make Stratford residents aware about this bylaw. The bylaw prohibits smoking nine metres from all municipal building entrances, at bus shelters, on playgrounds and at sports fields. It also prohibits smoking on the entire grounds of Stratford General Hospital.
Stratford has joined more than 120 municipalities across the province that have passed outdoor no-smoking bylaws to make their communities healthier.
“Research indicates there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke, even outdoors,†says Miriam Klassen, Medical Officer of Health. “We are pleased that the City of Stratford has shown leadership by passing this bylaw and helping protect the health of its residents.â€
Other benefits of this bylaw amendment include:
helping to prevent youth from starting to use tobacco by limiting their exposure
helping people to quit smoking
reducing cigarette butt litter in parks and playgrounds.
The Health Unit’s THINK youth team completed a cigarette butt clean-up on April 25, 2014 for Earth Week. The group collected over 1,000 cigarette butts from areas that are affected by the bylaw, such as around the Stratford City Hall building, Queen’s Park and on the grounds of Stratford General Hospital.
Signage will be installed in various locations around the city and on hospital property to ensure the public is aware of the bylaw. Residents who are found smoking in prohibited areas may be ticketed with a fine.

(DRYDEN, ON.) – On May 25 2014, officers from the Dryden Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a two vehicle motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Mutrie Township. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 6am and observed a Westbound Mustang convertible had collided with a Eastbound Tractor Trailer Unit. The driver of the Mustang, Adrian CHAPADOS (37yrs old) of Saskatchewan was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the mustang, Frisco MCRAE (18yrs old) of Quebec was transported to hospital with serious injury by ambulance, he succumbed to his injuries while at hospital. The occupants of the Tractor Trailer Unit were uninjured.
The Technical Traffic Collision Unit (TTCI), Highway Safety Division (HSD), Ministry of Environment (MOE) and Transfield all attended the scene. The highway was closed for approximately 6 hours. No charges have been laid.
(LAKESHORE, ON) -The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with Lakeshore Fire Service was called to a residence in the 1500 block of Essex County Road 22 in Lakeshore, for a residential fire at approximately 10:25 p.m. on May 27, 2014.
One person perished in the fire. The name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The Ontario Fire Marshall (OFM) has been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.
Essex County Road 22 between Willow Wood Drive and Rourke Line in Lakeshore is currently closed and will remain so for an unknown length of time.

(GUELPH-ERAMOSA TOWNSHIP, ON) – On May 23, 2014 at approximately 1:20 p.m. members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Management Unit (TMU) were conducting R.I.D.E. spot checks on Wellington Road 39 just south of Wellington Road 30 in Guelph-Eramosa Township.
Officers investigated the driver of a 2002 Subaru that entered into the checkpoint and immediately detected the strong odor of marihuana emanating from the vehicle. The male driver surrendered a paper bag containing individual baggies filled with bud marihuana.
Michael SPOHN aged 50 of the Village of Elora has been charged with Possession of Schedule Two Substance – Marihuana – Over 30 grams contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal court on July 4, 2014 to answer to the charge.
