Officers Struck – Teen Arrested

(OTTAWA, ON) – There was a major traffic safety initiative in Ottawa Friday night, which included support from the sky.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division and Ottawa OPP Detachment joined forces with an aircraft from OPP Aviation Services to target dangerous driving. One incident saw two officers struck by a fleeing vehicle.

A group of drivers, gathered in the Alti Place area of Ottawa, near Highway 416, had their plans for illegal racing shutdown. Officers converged on the area, while the OPP plane circled above. When two vehicles started street-racing, officers attempted to stop them. One vehicle stopped, while the other struck two OPP officers and fled. The officers were not seriously hurt, and the aircraft was able to track the fleeing vehicle until other officers could successfully stop it and arrest the driver.

Pramod PERSAD, age 19 of Kanata has been charged under the Criminal Code, Highway Traffic and Cannabis Control Act with:

  • Assaulting a police officer with a weapon – two counts
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Dangerous operation
  • Race a vehicle
  • Stunt driving
  • Driving with cannabis readily available
  • Driving without two licence plates
  • Obstructing a licence plate
  • Colour coating obscuring interior (window tint was too dark)

The other driver, who did stop, also faces Highway Traffic Act charges.

In another incident, officers observed two motorcycles driving at high speeds on Highway 417 and Highway 416. The OPP aircraft tracked them, recording speeds up to 230 km/h. The plane followed them off the highway and through Barrhaven, where they could be seen lane splitting, weaving through traffic and running red lights. One motorcycle was successfully tracked to a residence in Barrhaven. 20-year-old Anthony NAJM of Ottawa was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act with:

  • Dangerous driving
  • Stunt driving
  • Speeding
  • No insurance
  • Use a licence plate not authorized
  • Driving a motorcycle with no motorcycle licence

Officers on the ground were busy, even without support from above:

  • A 17-year-old G2 driver was caught traveling 185 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 417. They were charged with stunt driving. Vehicle was impounded, licence suspended and a date in court.
  • A 37-year-old driver was stopped for traveling at 155 km/h in a 100 km/h on Highway 417 and was also charged for improper use of an HOV lane. Vehicle was impounded, licence suspended and a date in court.

“This was an outstanding example of teamwork, with a goal of making our highways and streets safer. This involved not only officers on the ground and in the air, but also excellent work by our OPP Communications Centre professionals.”

North Huron Council’s Special Meeting: Empty Words, Higher Taxes, and Failed Leadership

A Meeting of Empty Words and Inflated Self-Praise

Tonight’s agenda is full of glossy presentations and “strategic plan updates,” yet anyone who actually lives in Wingham, Blyth, or East Wawanosh knows the lived reality: 425 other municipalities in Ontario have lower tax rates. Families here are crushed under a property tax burden of 2.16%, one of the highest in the province, while council pats itself on the back for “community spirit” and “strategic goals”. What use are PowerPoint slides about “confidence-building strategies” when residents are forced to sell their homes at a loss?

Infrastructure Failure Hidden Behind Buzzwords

The meeting devotes pages to “paving programs” and “asset management updates”. Meanwhile, potholes crater local roads, sidewalks are illegally blocked by town staff dumping snow, and families have to walk their kids in traffic to get to school. Instead of enforcing their own bylaws, council buries the public in consultant jargon and “modernization plans.” The reality is simple: residents are paying triple Toronto-level taxes and getting third-world infrastructure.

Fireworks of Self-Congratulation, While Services Rot

The council brags about new fire trucks, daycare expansions, and a “Seniors Active Living Centre”—but these are fig leaves to distract from basic governance failures. Waste management is in chaos, recycling contracts are about to expire, and physician shortages are still plaguing the township. The “progress reports” are nothing more than smoke-and-mirror exercises designed to hide a crumbling foundation.

Paul Heffer: A Reeve in Name Only

If leadership is measured by courage and accountability, Reeve Paul Heffer has failed spectacularly. Time and again he has proven himself a coward—admitting in the past he won’t stand up to law-breaking town staff, while families suffer. Under his watch:

  • Taxes are suffocating families and destroying livelihoods.
  • Roads and sidewalks remain unsafe, blocked and neglected.
  • Public trust has collapsed, as residents see no accountability.

His performance as reeve is beyond poor—it’s reckless. A leader’s job is to protect the community, not to destroy its prosperity. Instead, Heffer presides like a puppet, rubber-stamping glossy by-laws and adjournments while his community crumbles.

Final Word

This meeting isn’t about residents. It isn’t about lowering taxes, fixing roads, or making sidewalks safe. It is a public relations exercise, an expensive self-promotion parade designed to prop up failing leadership.

Until there is accountability, until North Huron stops being the most expensive municipality to live in the area, and until cowards are replaced with real leaders, these meetings will remain nothing more than a cruel insult to the people footing the bill.
