(MOOSONEE, ON) – On May 12, 2014 at approximately 7:45 pm members of the Moosonee Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a break and enter in progress at a business located on Mistik Boulevard. Officers arrived shortly after and found the interior of the business to be ransacked and heavily damaged. The company vehicles had also been damaged extensively. The owners directed officers into the bush line where the subjects fled.

The accused led officers on a chase through the bush until two of the three were located and arrested on Bay Road. The third accused turned himself in on the morning of May 13, 2014.

The three males, ages 17, 15 and 14 have been charged with the following offences:

– Break, enter a place and commit an indictable offence

– Mischief over $5000

The identities of the three accused will not be released as they are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The accused were released on promises to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Moosonee on July 8, 2014.

(CLEARVIEW, SPRINGWATER TOWNSHIPS & WASAGA BEACH) – The Victoria Day Long Weekend traditionally draws a large volume of people to the Town of Wasaga Beach and surrounding area.

In an attempt by the members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, in partnership with the Town of Wasaga Beach, the Township of Clearview and the Township of Springwater, to make this coming Victoria Day Weekend safe for everyone, the Huronia West OPP will again be implementing their Strict is Fair” policy.

To aid in this policy there will be an increased Police presence in the high vehicle and pedestrian traffic areas of Wasaga Beach.

As a result of this policy the Police have seen a positive change in the attitude of visitors towards our community. We will stay vigilant in seeking out those in our community or those who visit it and fail to respect it and in doing so we strive to make our community a safer place for everyone.

(EAST GARAFRAXA, ON.) -On May13,2014 at 2:48 pm Dufferin OPP received a report of bear sightings. A East Garafraxa resident saw a Mother bear and her two cubs on a farm on 11th Line of East Garafraxa in Dufferin County

There are a variety of available options to reduce the likelihood of bears being attracted by household garbage and other domestic waste. These strategies have been adopted by various Ontario communities, either on a voluntary or mandatory basis.

Best Practices for Waste Management can include:

Restricting curb-side placement of garbage and recycling to the morning of pick-up.
Considering the use of community bear-resistant curb-side garbage collection in areas which are prone to bear problems.
Promoting the use of bear resistant waste containers by residents in areas prone to bear problems.
Promoting or requiring the use of bear resistant dumpsters by commercial businesses which produce food waste.

If You Encounter a Bear…
Remain calm and avoid sudden movements.
Give the bear plenty of room, allowing it to continue its activities undisturbed. If it changes its behavior, you’re too close so back away.
If you see a bear but the bear doesn’t see you, detour quickly and quietly.
If a bear spots you, try to get its attention while it is still farther away. You want it to know you’re human so talk in a normal voice and waive your arms.

Remember that a standing bear is not always a sign of aggression. Many times, bears will stand to get a better view.
Throw something onto the ground (like your camera) if the bear pursues you, as it may be distracted by this and allow you to escape.
Never feed or throw food to a bear.

(BURK’S FALLS, ON) – On Friday May 9, 2014 at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and the North East Region Drug Enforcement Section arrested and charged two males with possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance.

OPP Officers stopped a pickup truck in the Village of Burk’s Falls, and as a result of that traffic stop arrested the driver, Richard HUNT, 42, of Burk’s Falls, Ontario.
Further investigation lead to the arrest of a second male, Richard STEELE, 31, of Burk’s Falls, Ontario.
Both males were charged with possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act.

Hunt was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sundridge, Ontario on Thursday, June 26, 2014.

Steele was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound, Ontario.

(Aweres Township, ON) – On May 12, 2014 at approximately 8:00 pm Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police officers were conducting traffic control on the Mile Hill in Aweres Township for a disabled tractor trailer unit.

One of the officers conducting traffic control in the southbound lane observed a white Toyota car traveling northbound at a high rate of speed.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then continued northbound swerving in and out of traffic forcing several oncoming vehicles off the roadway.

The vehicle then pulled over to the shoulder of the road south of Mahler Road in Fenwick Township.

As a result of further investigation, twenty-eight year old Jennifer McMillan of Grace St., Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was arrested and charged with the following: Fail to Stop for Police; Driving while ability impaired by alcohol; Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol, Theft of property over $5000; Possession of Property over $5000; Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of Breach of Recognizance all contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

(MUNICIPALITY OF GREY HIGHLANDS, ON) – On Sunday, May 11, 2014, Grey County Provincial Police (OPP) received a call from a man reporting he may be in possession of a stolen dirt bike.

The 2009 Yamaha, 50 cc dirt bike was purchased last summer for $700 from an unknown male in Toronto, who had posted an ad on Kijiji.

Recently, after looking into purchasing a motorcycle of his own and becoming aware of the correct process of transferring ownership; the caller became suspicious that the dirt bike he had purchased last year may, in fact, be stolen after he was unable to obtain the ownership from the seller.

Police confirmed that the dirt bike had been reported stolen by Durham Regional Police in 2010.

The 40 year old Grey Highlands man immediately turned the dirt bike over to police, who notified the Durham Regional Police.

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Orillia Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is seeking the assistance of the public in locating a customized vehicle stolen from a Bay Street address in the City of Orillia.

On Thursday May 8, 2014 sometime after 6:30 p.m., someone stole a grey, 2000 Ford Focus from a parking lot on Bay Street. The vehicle has an Ontario licence plate of BPRT 350 and is modified with hand controls as the owner is handicapped.

The Orillia OPP is currently investigating the incident.

(COLLINGWOOD, ONTARIO) Yesterday evening, the 12th of May 2014, officers from the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to attend the Collingwood Harbour where the body of a male in his mid 70’s was discovered and later removed from the water.

The local OPP Crime Unit is currently investigating and the death does not appear suspicious at this time. Post mortem to be conducted in the near future.

(TOWNSHIP OF GEORGIAN BLUFFS, ON) – On Monday, May 12, 2014, at approximately 8:12 a.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a theft report from Owen Sound Volkswagen located on Hwy. 6 & 21 in the Township of Georgian Bluffs.

Sometime between 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10th and 7:45 a.m. on Monday, May 12th, unknown person(s) smashed the back window of a 2001 Volkswagen Golf and removed the stereo system from the vehicle.

Another vehicle, a 2004 Volkswagen Golf, had been propped up with cement blocks and all 4 tires/rims removed.

Both vehicles were parked in the rear parking lot of the business.

(MUNICIPALITY OF MEAFORD, ON) – On Saturday, May 10, 2014 at approximately 1:55 a.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting a R.I.D.E. spot check at Grey Rd. 15 and Princes St., Leith, in the Municipality of Meaford.

A 1998 Nissan vehicle had stopped and the driver of the vehicle had been found to be smoking marihuana. The driver handed the officer a glass pipe containing a green leafy substance, indicating he had more inside the vehicle which was turned over to police.

Tristan William FLOOD-BROWN, 29, of Owen Sound was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis marihuana – under 30 grams, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

He is scheduled to appear in Court in Owen Sound on Thursday, June 19, 2014.

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment received a report of a stolen vehicle from a Windham Road 2, Windham, Norfolk County, Ontario address.

On Monday, May 12, 2014 in the early morning hours, unknowns attended the address and proceeded to remove a vehicle that was parked behind a barn located on the property.

The vehicle is described as a black 1999, GMC Sierra pick-up truck with a stainless steel flatbed with a white fuel tank.

The Norfolk County OPP Detachment is continuing to investigate and is seeking assistance from the public. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are being asked to contact the Norfolk County OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.

(KENORA, ON) – Members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking for the public’s help in the search for a missing person. The missing person is Hughie WHISKEYJACK, age 47 from Kenora. WHISKEYJACK was reported missing on May 12, 2014 and was last seen on May 10, 2014 walking from Separations Rapids camp off the English River road.

He is described as First Nations, 6’1, 160 pounds, slim build, long black hair, brown eyes. He was last observed wearing blue jeans, navy t-shirt and brown work boots.
