SEARCH WARRANT

On May 15, 2014, just after 4:30pm, members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant at a residence on Church Street in Kitchener. Several prohibited weapons and replica firearms were found within the residence along with evidence of drug use and drug trafficking. A 48 year old Kitchener male is charged with weapons offences. A 49 year old Cambridge male is charged with breach of probation.

THEFT MOTOR VEHICLE

Thursday, May 15, 2014 at approximately 5:00 p.m., a 2007 silver Nissan Versa was stolen from the parking lot of Fairview Park Mall. Suspect(s) obtained the keys to the vehicle and drove off. Shortly afterward, the stolen Nissan Versa was involved in a hit-and-run collision in the area of Weber St E and Borden Ave N in the city of Kitchener. The stolen vehicle then fled the scene and was located a short distance away, unoccupied. FIRE

On Friday May 16, 2014,at approximately 4am, Waterloo Police responded to 235 Madison Ave at KW Auto Wreckers, in regards to a fire within the compound. The fire was contained to a camper-trailer, and was extinguished quickly by Kitchener Fire. The trailer was deemed as scrap and held no value. There was no injuries or further damaged sustained in the fire. The cause is undetermined, however it is not believed to be suspicious.

THEFT UNDER $5000

On May 16th, 2014, just before 1am, Waterloo Regional Police responded to a suspicious persons’ call where males were observed entering vehicles on Borden Ave North, in the city of Kitchener. Police were contacted by alert neighbours. Two Kitchener males, 22 and 23 years were arrested and jointly charged with theft under $5000, possession under $5000. The investigation is continuing. ROBBERY

Waterloo Regional Police are investigating a report of a person on person robbery. Police received information that at approximately 5am on May 15th, 2014 an adult Kitchener male victim was threatened by a male holding a weapon in the area of Ottawa Street South and Alpine Road, Kitchener. The male subject was accompanied by another male and a female in their 20’s. The victim reports that he was forced to drive these parties to 4 different locations before he dropped them all off. During this encounter with them, the victim had some money and a GPS stolen from him. The victim was not injured. Police are investigating. Assault/mischief charges

On May 15, 2014 at 5:30 p.m., the Guelph Police went to the Cardigan Street area to investigate an assault complaint. It is alleged that a male was driving on Cardigan Street and honked at a male pedestrian that was walking down the middle of the road. The driver then parked at his apartment building. The pedestrian approached him while he was still in his car and punched him in the face. The assaultive male then walked away. A short time later, this male returned and kicked the car, denting it. The driver called police while the male started jumping on the hood of his car further damaging it. Police arrested the male nearby.

Patrick MCDERMOTT, 27 years of Guelph has been charged with assault and mischief under $5,000. He will appear in court on June 24, 2014.

One man charged in six sexual assaults

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has charged an Ottawa man in relation to six sexual assaults that occurred over the last two years.

Yousef HUSSEIN, 25 years old, of Ottawa has been charged with six (6) counts of Sex assault, three (3) counts of Overcome Resistance, two (2) counts of Break and Enter and two (2) counts of Indecent Act.

Three of the sexual assaults occurred on:

August 5, 2012 on Banner Road;
June 26, 2013 on a footpath between Lancaster Road and Erinbrook Crescent; and
October 7, 2013 on Aldea Avenue.
These three cases had been previously linked by the task force assigned to the files.

The other three sexual assault charges relate to the sexual assaults that occurred on:

Late March 2013 in the 2600 block of Draper Avenue;
June 1, 2013 on Laurier Avenue near Chapel Street;
October 16, 2013 in the 2400 block of Baseline Road between Woodroffe Avenue and Greenbank Road.
HUSSEIN is scheduled to appear in court today.

“Identifying and arresting the person responsible for these crimes has been a priority for the Ottawa Police Service and I want to thank the investigators for their work,” said Chief Charles Bordeleau. “Investigators have worked tirelessly to solve these crimes.”

“I especially want to recognize the great courage and resilience of the women who came forward to police. It’s vital that these crimes are reported,” said Bordeleau. “Victims can have confidence in coming forward that when these crimes are reported they will be fully investigated.”

The task force received hundreds of public tips and identified over 150 persons of interest through a professional, methodical and thorough process.

“I also want to thank the public for their assistance in this investigation,” added Bordeleau.

The investigation continues.

The Ottawa Police will not be discussing details of the investigation as this information will be part of the evidence to be proven at court.

Read Away Fines For Kids

Huron County, ON – Do you love reading and using the library, but struggle with getting your books back on time? If you are between the ages of 0 and 16 you have the chance to erase those overdue library fines by reading!

From June 23rd to July 11th, children ages 0-16 can ‘pay’ their overdue library fines by reading at home or at the library. Often fines create a deterrent, especially for children, from using the library. If an individual’s fines become too great, they cannot use the library’s book-borrowing services.

The Read Away Fines program provides a 3 week window where children with fines can visit the library and ‘pay’ down these fines through reading. Every 15 minutes of reading removes $1.00 in fines, to a maximum of $20.00.

Participation is easy! Follow these simple steps:

VISIT one of the twelve Huron County Library locations and ask staff about the program. Make sure you bring your library card!
SIGN UP. Staff will give you a log sheet and reading contract, which must be signed by a parent.
READ at home or in the library. For every 15 minutes of reading during the program time period, you will erase $1.00 in fines. You can remove $4.00 in fines for one hour of reading, and so on to a maximum of $20.00.
LOG your book titles and the time you spend reading.
ERASE YOUR FINES. Once you’ve reached your Reading Goal, bring your log sheet back to the library and show it to the staff. The staff members will confirm you’ve met your goal, and your outstanding fines will be reduced!

Some restrictions apply. Children with more than $10.00 in fines will not be allowed to check out books, and will have to do their reading in the library.

Only fines on children’s items may be read away. The fines may appear on the child’s card or their parent or guardian’s card. Only late fines may be read away; fines for lost or damaged items, processing fines or collection service fees may not be read away.

Books read for Read Away Fines can also be logged for children attending the TD Summer Reading Club in July and August 2014.

Paving Scam Alert

(HOWICK, ON) – A couple from Howick called Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on May 13, 2014 to report a possible paving scam. The couple reported on May 6, 2014 a male showed up at the residence offering to pave their laneway for a great deal. He stated he was in the area doing work and had a spare load of asphalt that he could sell them for a discount. He told them they had to act quickly or he would move on. The owner of the property asked if they would take $3500 cash and they struck a deal on the spot.

The paving crew was at the residence within minutes and started on the job. Part way through the job the property owners started having concerns about the quality of the paving job. The recycled pavement was described as crumbling on the edges and was a mix of gravel and sand not asphalt. At this point the salesman stated he would take them around to some other laneways that he had completed in nearby Fordwich. The couple was taken to two other laneways and the quality of the paving jobs they saw were well below standard. One of the recently paved driveways had dandelions and grass poking through the asphalt.

During the time the salesman was showing off the other laneways the paving crew back at their residence had packed up and left. The driveway was not completely finished and the overall quality was well below standard. The salesman left them a business card claiming to be from Mississauga and they marketed themselves as “Specialists in recycled asphalt and highway grade asphalt”.

The owner has contacted the salesman several times over the last week and there have been numerous excuses and reasons given as to why they can’t get there to finish off the job to the customer’s satisfaction.

With the warmer weather, scammers will be going door-to-door offering numerous services such a paving, and roofing. If someone comes to your door, ask to see some identification. If you are interested in what this person has to offer, take time to find out about their business and their offer.

Driver Of Stolen Pickup Fails To Remain At Scene Of Collision

(WEST PERTH, ON) – Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers are investigating a fail to remain collision that took place this morning (15May2014) involving a stolen pickup truck. Shortly after 9:00 a.m. Perth County OPP officers along with Perth County EMS and West Perth Fire Department responded to a two vehicle collision northeast of Mitchell at the intersection of Line 36 and Road 150.

Police investigation revealed the driver of a red GMC Savana cube van was travelling westbound on Line 36 when he observed the driver of a small, black, four-door sedan travelling northbound on Road 150 fail to stop at the stop sign and proceed through the intersection. Seconds later, the driver of stolen grey 2010 Toyota Tundra pickup failed to stop at the intersection and the Tundra collided with the driver’s side of the Savana van pushing the van off of the roadway.

A witness observed the driver of the small, black, four-door sedan turn around and immediately return to the scene to pick up the driver of the stolen Toyota Tundra. The black sedan then sped away at a high rate of speed last seen travelling eastbound on Line 36.

The driver of the GMC Savana van, a 40 year old male from Stratford remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers determined the Toyota Tundra and an attached trailer were stolen a few minutes before the collision from a nearby farm located on Line 32. The thieves disconnected the trailer and it was recovered a short distance up the road from where it was stolen.

Fuel Stolen Overnight

(BRANT TWP, ON) – On May 11, 2014 at 9:06 am, the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of an overnight fuel theft from the Sprucedale Agromart located along Side road 25 north in Brant Township. Sometime between 8:45 pm on May 10, 2014 and 9:00 am on May 11, 2014 an out building was forcibly entered and a quantity of fuel was taken. There is no estimate on the value of the building repairs or stolen fuel at this time.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. THEFT UNDER $5000

On Wednesday May 14, 2014, a Waterloo resident who helps care for her seriously ill parent hired a local cleaning business to perform services in their home. Upon completion of the work, the complainant noticed that a quantity of prescription pain relievers and sleeping pills were missing from the residence. Police were contacted and initiated an investigation. An employee of the business, a 45 year old Kitchener man, was arrested and is charged with Theft under $5000, Possessing Stolen Property under $5000 and Possession of a controlled substance. The male is scheduled for a court appearance on June 26, 2014. The prescription items have been returned to the patient.

Manor Park Crescent Fire update

Fire at 25 Manor Park Crescent – update

On May 14, 2014 at approximately 6:30 a.m. the Guelph Fire Department responded to a fire at 25 Manor Park Cres. involving three attached condominium units.

The fire was difficult to extinguish; however, fire damage was contained to the third floor with extensive water damage throughout the building.

There were no injuries and four occupants escaped safely.

Fire Prevention was contacted to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The investigation has been completed and the cause is determined as a lightning strike to the roof area of the building.

Confirmation from the Ministry of Natural Resources indicated several lightning strikes occurred in the area between 03:35 and 03:40 a.m..

The fire smouldered for an extended period of time prior to being discovered by the occupants of one of the units implicated. The roof area was well involved upon this department’s arrival with fire crews working diligently to bring the fire under control.

The estimate of damage is $5 million.

Break and enter

On May 14, 2014 at 2:56 p.m., the Guelph Police went to an Eramosa Road residence to investigate a break and enter. Culprit(s) attempted to enter through a basement window. The window was damaged but the home was not entered. This occurred sometime over the last few days.
