The Barrie Police Service attended an Essa Road motel this morning with Paramedics for a person that was found to be in medical distress. The individual was transported to hospital but later was pronounced dead. As a precautionary measure, the Barrie Police Service is assisting the Coroner with the investigation. The motel and a partial lane of Essa Road will be secured to assist with the ongoing investigation. Police anticipate this area will be released tonight or early tomorrow.

On May 17th Barrie Police responded to numerous complaints of fireworks being shot off throughout the City. Under Barrie Bylaw, 2010/036, (available online), the use of fireworks is permitted on the Victoria Day weekend. However, there are specific conditions under which the fireworks can be set off.
Fireworks cannot be used on city streets, parks or anywhere where they would constitute a dangerous situation. Common sense should guide residents on the when and where usage of fireworks.
Barrie Police remind residents to use common sense and respect for your neighbours when using fireworks. In addition, Barrie Police remind residents, Noise bylaws remain in effect as well.

A citizen came into the Barrie Police station and reported that he had purchased the contents of a storage rental unit via an online bidding process.

In the locker he located a binder with instructions and formulas for explosive making. The binder was titled the terrorist handbook. He had also located, what he described as, 20 glass vials with unknown substances inside in a box in the locker. Out of concern he brought them to the Barrie Police station.

Members of the Explosive Disposal section of the Tactical Support Unit inspected the substances and determined that the materials were benign in nature and not compounds or precursors for explosives. They were seized and disposed of safely.

Police received a call from Georgian Ambulance Services that they were attending the intersection of Big Bay Point and Huronia Road for an all-terrain vehicle collision.

The Barrie Police Traffic Unit officers attended to investigation the collision. A 20 year old Barrie male had been operating his ATV and was thrown from the vehicle after going through a ditch. He suffered a severe fracture of one of his legs and was transported to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Police Constable Hale at (705) 725-7025 ext. 2913.

Police remind residents that operating an ATV within the City is prohibited.

Date: Friday, May 16, 2014 – 6:30pm
On Friday May 16, 2014 at approximately 630 pm the Barrie Police Service received a call from a concerned citizen reporting a possible impaired driver in the area of Innsfil St and Glenridge Road.

The citizen reported that the female driver of a black Nissan had been swerving between the lanes and that when the vehicle had stopped at an intersection that the female driver had appeared to have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

A uniform officer stopped the vehicle and very quickly placed the female driver under arrest for Impaired Driving, the female was transported to the station where she provided breath samples well over three times the legal limit.

As a result the 42 year old female will be released once sober with a future court date and will be facing Impaired Driving and Over 80 Mg charges.

Date: Saturday, May 17, 2014 – 10:30pm
On Friday May 16, 2014 at approximately 1030 pm a Barrie Police uniform officer on routine patrol observed a male driver operating a grey Lexus at a high rate of speed along Melrose Avenue.

The officer followed the vehicle as the driver pulled into a driveway and exited the vehicle and began to walk away from the vehicle.

As the officer questioned the male driver about his driving habits the officer determined that the driver’s ability to operate the vehicle was impaired by the amount of alcohol that the driver had consumed.

The male driver was arrested for Impaired Care and Control and was transported to the station in order to provide breath samples.

The driver blew over the legal limit as a result the 46 year old male was released with a future court date where he will face Impaired Care and Control and Over 80 Mg charges.
