OPP ASSIST ANISHINABEK POLICE SERVICE INVESTIGATING AND IDENTIFYING FOUND REMAINS ON CHRISTIAN ISLAND

(Christian Island, On)- Members of the Anishinabek Police Service were alerted to the discovery of what would appear to be human remains late in the afternoon of May 15, 2014 in an area south of West Beach on Christian Island.

A request was made to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to assist in this investigation which resulted in members being dispatched from the OPP Southern Georgian Bay Detachment along with members of the OPP Central Region Crime and Marine Unit’s, Forensic Identification Services Unit (FISU) of OPP General Headquarters (GHQ) Orillia, all under the direction of A/Detective Inspector Chris Loam of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) OPP GHQ.

A search of the area resulted in remains and other scene exhibits being removed for further examination at the Office of the Chief Coroner in Toronto so as to determine their origin, identity and possible cause of death.

This investigation has revealed that the found remains are those of Penny WARNE who at the age of 57 years was reported missing from her Wasaga Beach home on Feb 15, 2009. Investigators have ruled out foul play as a cause of death and have concluded their investigation of this incident. Investigators wish to thank all of those who assisted officers in the search for Penny stemming back to her 2009 disappearance.
