(THUNDER BAY, ON) – On Saturday, June 14, 2014 at approximately 1:50 pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised of a missing boater.
A 56 year old male from Thunder Bay went boating on the Kaministiquia River in the area of Forbes River Road and Silver Falls Road, during the evening hours and did not return to his camp.
OPP responded with Emergency Response Team (ERT) members and Marine Unit officers to begin searching the area on the Kaministiquia River.
The family of the missing male located the boat in the Kakabeka Falls area on Sunday evening.
Divers from the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) are currently searching the area of the Kaministiquia River.
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has reduced the flow rate on the Kaministiquia River for a period of up to seven hours today to assist the OPP with their efforts in locating the missing boater.
The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has provided air support by providing a helicopter and pilot to assist OPP with their efforts by conducting an aerial search of the Kaministiquia River.
A second team of OPP divers from the USRU are enroute to Thunder Bay to assist with the search efforts.
The investigation is continuing.
