(TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH FRONTENAC) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a motor vehicle collision between a small car and tractor trailer containing 40,000 pounds of potash fertilizer.
On Thursday the 19th of June, 2014 at 12:45 pm, a motorist was driving their small volkswagon golf, westbound on highway 401 near Highway 15 in the City of Kingston through a well marked construction zone.
A tractor trailer containing 40,000 pounds of potash struck the volkwagon from behind, forcing it off the roadway, causing the tractor trailer to overturn. The occupants of the volkswagon were uninjured, and the driver of the tractor trailer sustained minor injuries.
Ministry of the Environment officials also attended the scene, in order to supervise clean up of the roadway.
As a result of the investagation, the driver of the tractor trailer has been charged with careless driving.
All motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through construction zones. Maintaining large following distances will also allow for an increase in reaction times to changing road conditions.
Though eastbound traffic has not been affected by this collision, the westbound lanes are expected to be closed until approximately 8:00 pm this evening, with traffic being diverted at Joyceville Road.
