On June 16, 2014 the Guelph Police were called out for three dogs left in car complaints. That makes for ten calls of this kind so far this month.
Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked carâ€â€even for “just a minuteâ€Ââ€â€while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs: On a 25-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 38 and 50 degrees in just minutes, and on a 32-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 71 degrees in less than ten minutes.
Animals can sustain brain damage or even die from heatstroke in just fifteen minutes. Beating the heat is extra tough for dogs because they can only cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paw pads. Keeping your windows open does not fix the problem.
If your dog can stay alone in the car then your dog can stay alone at home.
Remember, that as a dog owner you could also be liable to criminal charges.
