Four youths charges laid in Centretown retail robberies

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit has laid a number of charges in relation to a series of early 2014 retail robberies.

On January 10, 2014, at approximately 5:55 pm, three suspects entered a convenience store situated along the 0-100 block of Preston Street. One of the suspects pointed a firearm at the employee and made a demand for cash. A second suspect then proceeded to obtain cash and cigarettes while a third stood as a lookout. The trio then fled the premises. There were no injuries.

On January 14, 2014, at approximately 6:05 pm, two suspects entered a convenience store situated along the 0-100 block of Elm Street. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun and pointed it at the store employee. The second suspect proceeded to obtain cash and cigarettes. The duo then fled the premises. There were no injuries.

On January 16, 2014, at approximately 7:00 pm, three suspects entered a convenience store situated along the 300 block of Fifth Avenue. One suspect remained at the door. The two remaining suspects, one armed with a handgun, confronted the employee and demanded cash. During the course of the robbery, the second of these suspects also produced a handgun. The suspects fled with an undisclosed quantity of cash. There were no injuries.

On April 2, 2014, at approximately 9:40 pm, a lone male suspect, armed with a handgun, entered a convenience store situated along the 0-100 block of Elm Street. The suspect pointed the weapon at store employees. The suspect was taking cash from the register when one of the employees attempted to intervene in the robbery. The employee was assaulted about the head with the pistol by the suspect. The suspect then fled the premises, dropping an imitation firearm in the process. The employee was transported by EMS to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Recently, a series of arrests has occurred and a number of charges laid in connection to these robberies:

Four counts of robbery
Two counts wear disguise
Six counts of Failure to comply with YCJA probation.
Three counts of possession of a weapon in commission of an offence
Two counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited
One count of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
One count of assault causing bodily harm
A 17 year old male, of Ottawa, is charged with:

Three counts of robbery
Three counts of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
Three counts of breach of recognizance
Three counts of wearing a disguise
Three counts of possession of a weapon in commission of an offence
A 17 year old male, of Ottawa, is charged with:

Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
2 counts of Robbery
2 counts of Possession Weapons Dangerous
4 counts of breach of probation
Two counts of Wearing a Disguise
Two counts Possession firearm while prohibited
A 16 year old male, of Ottawa, is charged with:

Two counts of robbery
Two counts of Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
Wearing a disguise
Two counts of Possession of a weapon
Two counts of Breach of undertaking
Three of the four persons charged remain in custody. One was released from a bail hearing.

Ottawa man charged with Human Trafficking offences

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Human Trafficking Unit has arrested and charged Ricardo SPENCE, 31 year old of Ottawa with Human Trafficking related offences.

On Tuesday, June 17, 2014, SPENCE was arrested by the R.O.P.E. (Repeat Offender Provincial Enforcement); and he was held in custody pending a bail hearing on Wednesday, June 18th. The Human Trafficking charges stem from a complaint last September and the Ottawa Police had issued a warrant for his arrest on September 18th.

SPENCE is charged with the following:

Trafficking in Persons by Exercising Control

Financial / Material Benefit

Withholding Documents

Forcible Confinement

Assault

Assault with Weapon or Imitation Weapon

Uttering Threats / Death or Bodily Harm

Failure to Comply / Condition of Undertaking to Officer

It is believed that there could be other victims and the Human Trafficking investigators are urging them to come forward.

Several charges laid in a series of retail robberies

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit has laid a number of charges in relation to a series of recent retail robberies. .

On June 7, 2014, at approximately 11:00 pm, a lone female suspect entered a gas station situated along the 3300 block of Fallowfield Road. The suspect asked for cigarettes and when the clerk requested payment, the suspect produced a hammer and made a demand for money. The suspect fled with an undisclosed quantity of cash.

On June 11, 2014, at approximately 9:00 pm, a lone female suspect entered a gas station situated along the 2900 block of Woodroffe Avenue. The suspect asked for cigarettes and when the clerk sought payment, the suspect produced a hammer and made a demand for money. The suspect fled with an undisclosed quantity of cash.

On June 15, 2014, at approximately 9:10 pm, a lone female suspect entered a gas station situated along the 1400 block of Woodroffe Avenue. The suspect asked for cigarettes and when the clerk requested identification, the suspect produced a hammer and made a demand for money and cigarettes. The suspect ultimately fled empty-handed after the clerk grabbed the hammer.

There were no injuries in any of the robberies.

On June 16, 2014, a 16 years old female was arrested without incident in relation to these robberies. She has been charged with the following offences:

Three counts of robbery

Three counts of possession of a weapon in commission of an offence

Three counts of wearing a disguise

Three counts Breach of Undertaking

The suspect will appear in Youth Court on June 17, 2014.

Update: Fraud suspect identified

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service has identified a suspect involved in a fraud at a pharmacy on Bank St. The 15-year-old turned herself into police after a photo and request for public assistance was released yesterday.

Seeking public assistance in identifying woman involved in fraud

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service is looking to identify a female involved in Fraud.

On May 22, 2014 at 5:00pm, a female suspect entered a local Pharmacy on Bank Street and purchased prescription drugs. She used a stolen Health card for identification.

She is described as a caucasian female, in her early 20s, 5’2” (157cm), thin build, long black hair… (see picture).

Seeking public assistance to locate the suspect of Saturday’s homicide

(Ottawa)-The Ottawa Police Service Major Crime Section continues to investigate the homicide of 18-year-old Brandon Volpi that occurred on June 7th in the 100 block of Besserer Street.

The Ottawa Police Service has issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of Devontay HACKETT, 18 years old, of Ottawa, for one count of 2nd Degree Murder. He is described as a light brown skinned male, 6’0”(183 cm), 135lbs (61 kg), with short brown hair and brown eyes (see picture).

Sexual assault Investigation in Sandy Hill

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Section is investigating the report of a sexual assault that occurred near the intersection of Templeton Street and Sweetland Avenue, in Sandy Hill on June 7th, 2014 at approximately 01:18 am.

In the early morning hours, a woman in her early twenties was walking on Templeton Street when she was grabbed by an unknown male and sexually assaulted. A male in his early 20’s saw the attack and came to the assistance of the victim.

The male suspect fled south from that area onto the property of Ottawa University. The suspect is described as Middle Eastern, medium build, 6’0” 180 pounds, wearing a collared white shirt and jeans and was in his mid to late 20’s. The suspect had short dark hair and a slight growth of facial hair, he also smelled strongly of cologne.

Major Crime Section investigating a homicide in downtown Ottawa

(Ottawa)The Ottawa Police Service Major Crime Section is investigating the homicide of an 18 year old male in the 100 block of Besserer Street.

Police responded to a call for service at approximately 3:35am in relation to a stabbing that occurred outside a local hotel. The male succumbed to injuries at a local hospital.

Notification of next of kin is ongoing and, as such, the identity of the victim will not be released at this time.

A 2nd male victim also received minor injuries, was treated at hospital and released.

Male Arrested with Loaded Handgun

(Ottawa) — On Wednesday June 4th, 2014 at approximately 8:00 PM, members of the Guns and Gangs Unit, with the assistance of the East Division Neighbourhood Office (EDNHO) arrested a male after stopped him in a vehicle on Aviation Parkway. The male was found to be in possession of a loaded 40 calibre semi-automatic Beretta handgun.

The arrested person was identified as Adrian LAI of Ottawa, 24 years of age. He will attend a show cause hearing on June 5th 2014 in Ottawa.

Ottawa man charged with Possession of Child pornography

Ottawa) Today, the Ottawa Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) charged an Ottawa man following the execution of a search warrant at the man’s residence.

Charles OGILVIE, 54 years old, of Ottawa is charged with two counts of Possession of Child Pornography.

He is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on June 5, 2014.

The Ottawa Police Service is a member of the Provincial Strategy to protect children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet. This Project has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Residential Break and Enter on Ivy Crescent

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service Break and Enter Unit is seeking public assistance in identifying a suspect of a break and enter.

The break-in occurred in the Rideau-Rockliffe area on April 29th, 2014 in the daytime hours. During the break-in, an unidentified male attended the rear of the building and was captured on camera prior to entering the ground level door. The male is believed to be the suspect in a residential break and enter in the 200 block of Ivy Crescent.

He is described as white male, 35-45 years old, tall and slim with dark hair.

Ottawa Man Wanted For Human Trafficking

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service is seeking public assistance in locating Taylor DAGG, a 23 year-old Ottawa man. He is wanted by the Ottawa Police in relation to a Human Trafficking investigation that started in 2013.

DAGG has two outstanding warrants with the Ottawa Police Service:

1- A first Instance Warrant for Breach of recognizance (2 counts)

2- A Bench Warrant for failing to appear at his preliminary hearing.

Man charged with several Sexual Assaults on the bike path

(Ottawa) This morning, the Ottawa Police Service Sexual Assault /Child Abuse Section charged Gavin Sean GRIFFITHS in relation to a series of incidents that occurred on the bike and walking paths in the New Edinburgh/North River Road Area.

The charges include 3 counts of Sexual Assault, 2 counts of Mischief and one count of Breach of Probation.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 20’s riding a bright yellow bike.
