Fatal Armed Robbery

(AMARANTH, ON) – The Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has elevated an armed robbery that occurred at a local gas station in the Town of Amaranth to a homicide investigation.

On October 7, 2024, at approximately 11:40 p.m., officers from the Dufferin OPP Detachment responded to a report of an armed robbery at a gas station on County Road 109. The individual discharged a firearm during the robbery and a victim sustained a life-threatening injury. The victim was transported by Air Ornge to a Toronto area trauma centre.

The victim has been identified as Mehakdeep Singh, a 25-year-old from Amaranth. On October 10, 2024, Mehakdeep succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The individual responsible was wearing a dark-coloured, three-quarter length winter jacket with a fur hood, black pants, black shoes, and a blue medical mask.

The investigation is ongoing by the Dufferin OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the OPP Emergency Response Unit, OPP Canine Unit, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

A firearm was involved in this incident. If you see this individual, do not engage or approach. Call 9-1-1 immediately to advise police.

The OPP is asking anyone in the area to check, save and secure any potential video evidence from devices at their homes or business between October 7, 2024, at 11:15 p.m. and October 8, 2024, at 12:00 a.m. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Murder – Daniel DOMJANIC Arrested

(TOWN OF MONO, ON) – The Dufferin County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged an individual in connection to a death investigation in the Town of Mono.

On September 17, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m., members of the Dufferin County OPP were called to a residence on Highway 10 to investigate a suspicious death.

The victim has been identified as 76-year-old Jelena DOMJANIC.

As a result of the investigation, Daniel DOMJANIC, a 49-year-old from the Town of Mono, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code (CC) with the following offence:

  • Second Degree Murder, section 235(1)

The accused is schedule to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on September 23, 2024.

The investigation remains ongoing. Residents can expect to see a police presence in the area of Highway 10 in the Town of Mono.

The investigation, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, involves OPP members from the Forensic Identification Services, Dufferin County Detachment and Crime Unit.

Infant Death – 2 Arrested

(WIKWEMIKONG, ON) – Police have arrested and charged two individuals in relation to an infant death investigation in Wikwemikong First Nation.

On May 8, 2024, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) commenced an investigation after an infant was transported to hospital. On May 15, 2024, WTPS requested assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Assistance was provided under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with support from the Manitoulin OPP Detachment. The infant was pronounced deceased on May 16, 2024.

As a result of the investigation, on August 22, a 33-year-old female was arrested. On August 26, a 34-year-old male was arrested. Both accused are of Wikwemikong First Nation and have been charged under the Criminal Code with the following offences:

  • Manslaughter, section 236
  • Criminal negligence causing death, section 222(f)(b)
  • Failing to provide the necessaries of life, section 215

One of the accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Wikwemikong on September 3, 2024. The other accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Wikwemikong on August 27, 2024, for a bail hearing.

As a publication ban has been issued, further information will not be released.

Murder – One Arrested

(BRANT, ON) – One individual has been arrested and charged in connection with a homicide in Brant County.

On November 24, 2022, at approximately 12:45 p.m., members of the Brant County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended an address on Salt Springs Church Road to investigate a report of a deceased individual.

Investigators have determined the deceased, identified as 82-year-old Gordon OUGHTRED of Brant County, died as result of homicide.

As a result of the investigation, 79-year-old Elfgard OUGHTRED, of Brant County, has been charged with second degree murder, contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brantford on August 16, 2024.

A publication ban has been issued and further information will not be released.

The investigation is being conducted by the Brant County OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Owen Sound Murder Update

(OWEN SOUND, ON) – Arrests have been made in relation to an ongoing homicide investigation being conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Owen Sound Police Service (OSPS).

The investigation began when Sharifur RAHMAN, 44 years old of Owen Sound, was assaulted in the area of 2nd Avenue East in Owen Sound on August 17, 2023, at approximately 9:20 p.m. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on August 24, 2023. Police released a description and photos of two suspects and a vehicle, requesting public information.

As a result of the investigation, arrests have been made on July 30, 2024. Due to the complexity of this ongoing investigation and to protect its integrity and potential court proceedings, the OPP and OSPS are unable to comment further at this time. Updates will be provided when they become available.

The OSPS and the OPP thank the Owen Sound community for their support and valuable tips provided. We recognize the significant impact this case has had on the community and we sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation.

Murder – Andrew James THOMPSON Arrested

(GREATER NAPANEE, ON) – One person has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal residential fire.

On August 3, 2024, just before 8:15 p.m., Lennox and Addington (L&A) County OPP along with the Greater Napanee Fire Department and Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services responded to a fire at a multi-dwelling residence on John Street, Greater Napanee. A 67-year-old resident was transported to the hospital by ambulance and pronounced deceased a short time later.

As a result of the investigation, Andrew James THOMPSON, 31-years-old of Picton has been arrested and charged with:

·      Murder, Section. 235(1) of the Criminal Code

·      Criminal harassment – threatening conduct, Section 264(2)(d) of the Criminal Code

·      Arson – disregard for human life, Section 433(a) of the Criminal Code

·      Arson – damage to property, Section 434 of the Criminal Code – (three counts)

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee tomorrow.

The L&A County OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Fire Marshall and the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Repeat Offender Charged With Murder

(BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION, ON) – The victim has succumbed to their injuries, additional charges were laid, and a third person has been charged in relation to a stabbing incident in Batchewana First Nation. 

On July 30, 2024, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the Batchewana First Nation Police Service and the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a stabbing incident on Gran Street. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Brandan PELLOW of Aweres Township, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and pronounced deceased on August 5, 2024.

On August 1, 2024, a third person was arrested in relation to the incident.

Adrian BLACKBIRD, 20 years of age of Batchewana First Nation, has been charged with the following Criminal Code (CC) offences:

·      First degree murder, section 235(1)

·      Aggravated assault, section 268

·      Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm, section 264(1)

·      Failure to comply with release order-other than to attend court, section 145(5)(a)

On August 5, 2024, police re-arrested both accused, a 17-year-old from Batchewana First Nation and a 16-year-old from Thunder Bay, and laid an additional charge of first degree murder, section 235(1) CC.

All accused persons have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on a later date.

The investigation continues by the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Crime Unit and the Batchewana Police Service under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

Meaford Murder Update: Second Person Charged

(MEAFORD, ON) – A second person has been charged in connection with an ongoing homicide investigation in Meaford.

On May 3, 2020, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Grey Bruce Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a missing person report for 25-year-old Emerson SPRUNG, who was last seen leaving his family residence in Meaford. His remains were located on May 6, 2020.

On July 25, 2024, as a result of the ongoing investigation by the Grey Bruce OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, a second person was charged.

Laurel CAMPBELL, age 32 of Meaford, has been arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder, contrary to section 240 of the Criminal Code.

The accused has been held for a bail hearing and was released. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on September 19, 2024.

Murder Update: Justus CHESTER Arrested & Victim Identified

(MIDLAND, ON) – Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged an individual in connection to a homicide investigation in the Town of Midland.

On July 15, 2024, the OPP attended a residence on Seventh Street just before 1:00 p.m. and located a deceased individual. A second individual was located in the residence and transported to a hospital for medical attention. That individual has since been arrested and charged.

The deceased has been identified as Julia BRADY, age 23 from Midland.

As a result of the investigation, Justus CHESTER, age 26 from Midland, has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder, contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on July 22, 2024.

The Southern Georgian Bay Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

UPDATE: Family Shot To Death

(HARROW, ON) – Investigators have identified the cause of death for the four individuals in the death investigation in Harrow.

Postmortem examinations have determined the cause of death as gunshot wounds for 41-year-old Carly STANNARD-WALSH, 13-year-old Madison WALSH and 8-year-old Hunter WALSH. The cause of death for 42-year-old Steven WALSH has been determined as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

There is no imminent threat to public safety, although the OPP reminds all members of the public to be aware of their personal safety at all times.

Members of the Essex County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began the investigation on June 20, 2024, after receiving a request to check on the well-being of a person at the home, which led to the discovery of the deceased individuals.

The investigation by the Essex County OPP Crime Unit remains ongoing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

The initial investigation has determined that this is a case of intimate partner violence (IPV). IPV is a serious and prevalent problem. IPV involves the use of physical, psychological or sexual force, actual or threatened, in an intimate relationship. However, these actions are not always physical and can involve emotional and psychological abuse, economic control or coercive control. The OPP encourages anyone who is experiencing IPV to contact police or your local Ontario Victim Services branch to develop a safety plan.

Murder Update: Police Seeking Public Assistance

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – Police are seeking public assistance in relation to a homicide investigation in Central Huron. 

Investigators are looking to speak with anyone who was in the area of Holmesville Public School on Cut Line Road between 12:00 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. on July 2, 2024. Motorists who travelled through the area during this time are also asked to check their dashcams for any footage that may assist with the investigation.

Murder In Central Huron

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – A young person has been charged with first degree murder in connection with a death investigation in Central Huron.

On July 2, 2024, at 4:18 p.m., members of the Huron County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and emergency services responded to a Cut Line Road address between Parr Line and Tipperary Line, where a youth was located, transported to hospital, and later pronounced deceased.

As a result of the investigation, police have charged a young person from Central Huron with first degree murder, contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich.

 The identity of the accused is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and will not be released.

The investigation continues by the Huron County OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner.

Murder: Names Released

(WABASEEMOONG FIRST NATION, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), in partnership with the Treaty Three Police Service (T3PS), has laid a murder charge related to a homicide in Wabaseemoong First Nation.

On June 21, 2024, members of the T3PS and Emergency Medical Services responded to a residence and located one individual in medical distress. The individual was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The deceased has been identified as Carl Lee JAMIESON Junior, 34-years-old, of Wabaseemong First Nation. A post-mortem examination will be conducted at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto next week.

As a result of the investigation, Sheldon MCDONALD, 33-years-old, of Wabaseemong First Nation has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to Section 235 (1) of the Criminal Code. The accused has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on July 11, 2024.

The investigation by the T3PS, OPP Forensic Identification Services, and OPP North West Region Crime Unit is continuing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

There is no threat to public safety at this time. Members of the public can expect to see a large police presence in the area as a result of the investigation.

Travis Willard WAND: Murder & Kidnapping

(TOWN OF MINTO, ON) – The Wellington County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a third individual in connection with the kidnapping and homicide of Jason BROWN.

On March 12, 2019, the body of Jason John BROWN, 43 years old of Kitchener, was located in the Oshawa area of Durham Region.

As a result of the investigation, Travis Willard WAND, 30 years old of Wellington North, has been charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

·       First Degree Murder, section 235(1)

·       Assault with a Weapon, section 267 – two counts

·       Kidnapping, section 279(1)(a)

·       Theft Over $5,000 – Motor Vehicle, section 333.1 (1)

·       Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000, section 354(1) – two counts

·       Obstruct Justice, section 139(1) – two counts

The accused is currently in custody and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on September 21, 2024. 

The Wellington County OPP Crime Unit continues to investigate under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch and with the assistance of the OPP Biker Enforcement Unit.

Murder – Names Released

(SOUTH PORCUPINE, ON) – Charges have been laid in connection with an ongoing investigation in Egan Township.

On May 23, 2024, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) located a deceased person in a wooded area in Egan Township. The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Marcel THOMA of Petawawa, who was reported missing on May 18, 2024. His death was deemed a homicide.

On June 12, 2024, one person was apprehended by members of the OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) and taken into custody in the area of Night Hawk Lake, east of Timmins. During the interaction, an OPP officer was shot, transported to hospital in stable condition and is expected to recover from the injuries. The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in relation to this incident.

As a result of the investigation, Lucas MACDONALD, age 43, of Egan Township, has been charged with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code:

·      First degree murder, s. 235(1)

·      Attempt to commit murder using firearm, s. 239(1)(a.1)

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins on June 14, 2024.

The investigation is continuing by the South Porcupine OPP and the OPP North East Region Crime Units under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

Assistance was provided by OPP specialty units, including Critical Incident Command; TRU; Emergency Response Team; Tactical Emergency Medical Services; North East Criminal Operations; North East Regional Support Team; Canine Unit; Aviation; Snowmobile, ATV and Vessel Enforcement; and, South Porcupine OPP Detachment members, as well as members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
