Robert Schmitz – Impaired Driving

(GREY HIGHLANDS, ON) – On October 31, 2024, at 5:42 p.m., the Grey Bruce OPP responded to a traffic complaint of an impaired driver on Highway 10 in Markdale, Grey Highlands.

Robert Schmitz, 26, of Melancthon was charged with:

·      Operation while Impaired – alcohol and drugs

·      Failure or refusal to comply with demand

·      Breach of recognizance (two counts)

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on December 5, 2024.

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute.

Samantha HACKSON – Impaired Driving

(SHELBURNE, ON) – Members of the Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged an Orangeville resident with impaired operation related offences as the result of a traffic complaint.

On October 29, 2024, just after 2:00 p.m., Dufferin OPP officers were dispatched to a traffic complain in the area of Col. Phillips Drive in the Town of Shelburne. The officers located the vehicle and were quickly led into an impaired by drug investigation.

Samantha HACKSON, a 39-year-old female, from Orangeville has been charged with:

•      Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

 •     Poss of a Schedule I Substance – Opioid (other than heroin)

The accused individual is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville. Their driver’s licence was suspended 90 days, and their vehicle impounded for 7 days.

More Impaired Drivers

(TOWN OF WASAGA BEACH, CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP, ON) – The Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged two individuals with impaired driving related charges over the night.

On October 30, at approximately 6:28 p.m., Huronia West OPP officers responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle in the Town of Wasaga Beach. Upon arrival the driver had fled the scene but was picked up by officers a short time later. Officers administered a roadside Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) on the driver resulting in a three-day suspension. A 45-year-old of Bradford, was additionally charged under the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor Licence and Control Act with:

·      Adult Fail to Remain

·      Adult Careless Driving

·      Adult Having Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor

·      Adult Drive Motor Vehicle with Liquor Readily Available

At approximately 9:34 p.m., Huronia West OPP officers conducted a traffic stop in Clearview Township. Officers engaged in an impaired operation investigation. Officers administered a roadside Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) on the driver. The driver then tried to flee from police and was picked up by police shortly after departure. As a result, Patrick Lewis PARKER, 32-year-old of Wasaga Beach, was arrested and has been charged with the following:

·      Adult Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

·      Adult Flight from Peace Officer

·      Adult Resist Peace Officer

·      Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm

The accused is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

More Impaired Drivers Arrested

(WEST PERTH, ON) – Two people are facing charges following impaired driving investigations in West Perth on Sunday night.

On October 27, 2024 just before 6:00 p.m., the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint on Perth Road 164, in the Municipality of West Perth. 

Tyler YOUNG, 45, of Powassan, has been charged with:

–      Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

–      Dangerous Operation

–      Failure or refusal to comply with demand

–      Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Cocaine

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice to speak to the charges on December 2, 2024.

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute. 

Again on October 27, 2024, just before 11:00 p.m., the Perth County OPP were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program on Maddison Street West, in the Municipality of West Perth. A vehicle stop was conducted, and as a result, the driver was placed under arrest.

Nolan HORNBY, 24, of Oshawa, has been charged with:

–      Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice to speak to the charges on December 2, 2024.

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute.

3 Dead – 1 Impaired Driver

(BOBS LAKE, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has now laid charges in connection with a fatal boating collision on the Buck Bay area of Bobs Lake.

Three people died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision on the evening of May 18, 2024. Additionally, three individuals were injured.

On October 29, 2024, as a result of that investigation, the OPP arrested and charged Matthew SPLINTER, age 44 of South Frontenac Township, with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death, sec. 320.13(3) – three counts
  • Dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, sec. 320.13(2) – three counts.
  • Impaired operation causing death, sec. 320.14(3) – three counts
  • Impaired operation causing bodily harm, sec. 320.14(2) – three counts

The accused was held in custody and was scheduled to appear for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kingston on October 30, 2024.

The investigation, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner, involved support from frontline officers, Collision Reconstructionists, as well as members of multiple OPP Crime Units, the Technical Collision Investigation Team, and Forensic Identification Services.

More Impaired Drivers Charged

(TOWN OF WASAGA BEACH, CLEARVIEW AND SPRINGWATER TOWNSHIPS, ON) – The Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged several individuals with impaired driving related charges over the past 2 days.

On October 29, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Huronia West OPP officers conducted a traffic stop in Clearview Township. Officers engaged in an impaired operation investigation. As a result, Dustin PATTERSON, 43-year-old of Nottawa, was arrested and has been charged with the following:

·      Adult Operation while impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·      Adult Resist Peace Officer

·      Adult Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand

The accused is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

At approximately 9:07 p.m., Huronia West OPP officers conducted a traffic stop in Springwater Township. Officers administered a roadside Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) on the driver. As a result, a 24-year-old of Port McNicoll, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

·      Adult Novice Driver – B.A.C. Above Zero

At approximately 9:55 p.m., Huronia West OPP officers stopped a motor vehicle in Clearview Township travelling at a speed of 136 kms in a posted 80 kms zone. Officers administered a roadside Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) on the driver. As a result, Shaylah Justine Inez ARMSTRONG, 33-year-old of Stayner, was arrested and has been charged with the following:

·      Adult Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·      Adult Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

·      Adult Dangerous Operation

The accused is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

At approximately 11:47 p.m., a Huronia West OPP Officer stopped a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in Wasaga Beach. The officer administered a roadside Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) on the driver. As a result, Rajan RAJAN, 36-year-old of Wasaga Beach, was arrested and has been charged with the following:

·      Adult Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·      Adult Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

More Impaired Drivers Arrested

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON) – The Sault Ste. Marie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has investigated four impaired driving incidents this month, charging four drivers with a total of nine offences. All incidents occurred on busy roads during the afternoon and early evening hours. 

On October 12, 2024, at approximately 2:56 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checkpoint on Highway 556 near Searchmont. A vehicle entered the RIDE and investigation determined the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was also prohibited from driving a motor vehicle in the province of Ontario. As a result, Thomas JAEGER, 45 years-of-age, of Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Driving while under suspension

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on November 18, 2024 in Sault Ste. Marie. The accused’s vehicle was impounded for 45 days.

On October 14, 2024, at approximately 5:49 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers were conducting general patrol on Second Line West in Sault Ste. Marie. They observed a motor vehicle driving slower than the flow of traffic in a passing lane. A traffic stop was conducted and investigation determined the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. As a result, Robert WILDMAN, 53 years-of-age, of Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Fail to keep right when driving at less than normal speed

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on November 4, 2024 in Sault Ste. Marie. The accused was issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

On October 26, 2024, at approximately 4:38 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers were conducting general patrol on Fourth Line West in Sault Ste. Marie. They observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was conducted and investigation determined the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. As a result, Daniel THORNTON, 40 years-of-age, of Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on November 25, 2024 in Sault Ste. Marie. The accused was issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

On October 27, 2024, at approximately 4:36 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie OPP were notified of a traffic complaint for a southbound motor vehicle travelling on Highway 17, south of Wawa. Witnesses reported the vehicle swerving in and out of its lane, entering the oncoming lane and nearly causing several head-on collisions. The vehicle was located on Highway 17 near White Lane Drive in Goulais River. Investigation determined the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. As a result, Ryan KOSKI, 45 years-of-age, of Thunder Bay was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on November 25, 2024 in Sault Ste. Marie. The accused was issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Daniel CORMIER – Impaired Driving

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a South Huron resident with several criminal offences following a traffic complaint on October 15th, 2024, in the Municipality of Central Huron. 

Just after 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024, Huron County OPP received a traffic complaint from a member of the public who was concerned that a driver may be driving impaired. Police located the suspect vehicle on London Road in Central Huron and conducted a traffic stop. Police spoke to the driver and determined that the driver’s ability to operate the motor vehicle was impaired.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation and transported to the Perth County OPP detachment in Sebringville where they underwent a series of tests with an OPP Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

Daniel CORMIER, 46 years of age from South Huron has been charged with:

–      Operation while Impaired – alcohol and drugs,

–      Dangerous Operation,

–      Operation while Prohibited,

–      Possession of a Schedule III Substance.

The accused was additionally charged with offences found in the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Control Act, Cannabis Act, and the Cannabis Control Act.

The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for 45 days.

The accused was later released from custody with a court appearance scheduled at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich on November 18th, 2024.

Wendy DINDIA – Impaired Driving

(HEARST, ON) – A traffic stop for no licence plate led to an impaired driving arrest on Highway 11.

On October 21, 2024, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Highway 11 west of Hearst.

Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined that the driver had been consuming an intoxicated substance. The driver was arrested and transported to the Hearst detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Wendy DINDIA, 65 years of age of Whitehorse, YT, was charged with operation while impaired – drugs.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on December 18, 2024, in Hearst. The accused was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

Alexandra COPELAND – Impaired Driving

(MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ON) – Driver facing Impaired driving charge after failing roadside demand.

On October 26, 2024, at 2:33 a.m., a member of the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), while on general patrol on Richmond Street, in Middlesex Centre performed a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling through Arva at nearly double the posted 60km/h speed limit.

It was determined the driver had previously consumed alcohol. An Approved Screening Device (ASD) was utilized. The driver was arrested and transported to the Middlesex OPP detachment where further tests were administered.

As a result, Alexandra COPELAND, a 22-year-old of London, has been charged under the Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act with:

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

·      Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform stunt – Excessive speed

The accused has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice to speak to the charges on November 21, 2024.

More Impaired Drivers Arrested

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON) – Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) entered into two separate impaired driving investigations on October 26, 2024, and October 27, 2024.

On October 26, 2024, at approximately 8:55 p.m., officers responded to Need Street, Bobcaygeon, for a report of a possible impaired driver. Officers attended the area and located the vehicle. Through investigation the driver was believed to be impaired, however, refused to complete the testing.

Howard NEWHOOK, 68-year-old of Bobcaygeon, was charged with:

  • Failure or Refusal to comply with demand

On October 27, 2024, at approximately 2:35 a.m. officers responded to County Road 8, Verulam Township, for a report of a possible impaired driver. Officers attended the area and located the vehicle. Through investigation the driver was arrested and charged with Impaired Driving Offences.

Tye WINTELS, 22-year-old of Fenelon Falls, was charged with

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Both accused are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay at a later date. Both motor vehicles were towed and impounded for 7 days.

If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan to not drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or public transit, or come up with another plan that takes impaired driving out of the picture.

Kevin MIKKELSEN – Impaired Driving, Meth, Etc.

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – An Elliot Lake resident was charged with impaired after an early morning complaint on Highland Place. 

On October 24, 2024, at approximately 5:30 a.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of man slumped over the steering wheel of a blue minivan and the motor running. Police attended and tried to speak to the man, but he was dancing to music inside the minivan and ignoring police. He then proceeded to urinate all over the steering wheel and driver’s seat area. The man continued to be uncooperative, but eventually entry was gained and the man safely arrested.  In his possession was suspected Fentanyl, crack cocaine, and crack pipes. There was also an open bottle of rum and cans of beer, both empty and full inside the van. The minivan was subsequently towed and impounded.

Kevin MIKKELSEN, 49-years-old, from Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Have care or control of vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available
  • Have care or control of vehicle or boat with cannabis in open original packaging
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – methamphetamine
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – opioid (other than heroin)

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on October 24, 2024.

Derek BROWN – Impaired Driving

( FORT FRANCES) The Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), has charged an individual following a traffic stop.

On October 22, 2024, at approximately 7:20 p.m. the Provincial Communications Centre received reports of a impaired driver leaving a licensed establishment in the Town of Fort Frances. Police patrolled the area and located the subject motor and conducted a traffic stop.

While speaking with the driver, the investigating officer observed signs of intoxication and conducted an impaired driving investigation.

As a result of the investigation, Derek BROWN, a 46-year-old from Sleeman Ontario was charged with:

  • Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.
  • Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Fort Frances on December 9, 2024.

Nevaeh St Louis – Impaired Driving

(SOUTH BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – On October 19, 2024, at 9:51 p.m., the Grey Bruce OPP received a traffic complaint of an impaired driver on Howdenvale Road in South Bruce Peninsula.

The police located the vehicle attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle did not stop, and a short time later crashed into a stationary police vehicle that was parked with its emergency lights and sirens activated. Both vehicles sustained damage, none of the occupants were injured.

Nevaeh St Louis, 19-years-old of South Bruce Peninsula was charged with:

·      Operation while Impaired – alcohol and drugs

·      Operation while Impaired – BAC 80 plus

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on October 31, 2024.

(DUFFERIN COUNTY) – Members of the Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged two males with impaired operation related offences over the last few days.

On October 19, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Dufferin OPP officers were dispatched to a single motor vehicle collision the area of Highway 10 in the Town of Mono. The officers arrived on scene and located a vehicle in the ditch along with a male party standing beside the vehicle. During their interaction officers were quickly led to an impaired driving investigation.

Harjot ATWAL, a 37-year-old male, from Nobleton has been charged with:

•      Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

•      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

•      Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

On October 20, 2024, at approximately 9:10 p.m., Dufferin OPP officers were dispatched to the area of Red Elm Drive in the Town of Shelburne for a traffic complaint. During their interaction officers were quickly led to an impaired driving investigation.

Ian KAMAU, a 29-year-old male, from Niagara Falls has been charged with:

•      Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

•      Novice driver – B.A.C. above zero

•      Novice driver fail to surrender licence

•      Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

•      Class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by qualified driver

The accused individuals are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville. Their driver’s licence was suspended 90 days, and their vehicle impounded for 7 days.
