Assault downtown – male arrested

On May 8, 2014 at 6:50 p.m., the Guelph Police went to the Old Quebec Street mall to assist security with a male. It is alleged that the intoxicated male was trying to go into the mall and when security attempted to prevent him from entering, the male punched the security officer in the face.

Wayne FOREST, 60 years of Guelph has been charged with assault. He will appear in court on June 17, 2014.

Tyler ANDROSS – Drunk Driving

On May 9, 2014 at 1:22 a.m., the Guelph Police conducted a traffic stop in the area of Lowes Road with a motor vehicle. Police spoke with the male driver and a demand was made for a roadside breath sample. He failed this test and was arrested.

Tyler ANDROSS, 24 years of Guelph has been charged with drive over 80 mg. He will appear in court on May 27, 2014.

Liam WITTNEBEL – Drunk Driving

On May 9, 2014 at 1:05 a.m., the Guelph Police observed a motor vehicle driving erratically on Wyndham Street. A traffic stop was conducted on Norfolk Street. Police investigation determined that the male driver was impaired and he was arrested.

Liam WITTNEBEL, 20 years of Kitchener has been charged with impaired driving and drive over 80 mg. He will appear in court May 23, 2014.

Fire – update

On May 4, 2014 at approximately 8:00 p.m. emergency services were alerted to a fire at Ken’s Family Restaurant, Silvercreek Parkway North at Woodlawn Road West. Guelph Fire Department attended and extinguished the fire in the premises.

One male from the restaurant was taken to Guelph General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Three Guelph Police officers were treated at Guelph General Hospital for smoke inhalation and released.

The investigation continues and anyone with information that may assist the investigation is requested to contact D/Cst Lester Tang, X 7343.

Updated information:

A male associated to Ken’s Family Restaurant remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries as a result of this incident. The Office of the Fire Marshal, Guelph Fire Department Fire Prevention Office, and Guelph Police Service members have been investigating the circumstances of the fire.

This is an ongoing investigation, and facts and circumstances will not be released. At this time investigators believe this fire to have been deliberately set, and it is not believed to be a random act. Guelph Police Service members continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this fire, with the assistance of the Ontario Fire Marshal.

On Monday May 5, 2014, Guelph Police Service requested members of the public who had been at Ken’s Family Restaurant on Sunday May 4, 2014 to contact investigators. We have received contact from numerous members of the public, and are grateful for the assistance received. If members of the public were in the area of Silvercreek Parkway North and Woodlawn Road West on Sunday evening between 7:00 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. and noticed anything, they are asked to contact D/Cst Lester Tang at 519-824-1212 X 7343 or D/Sgt Dave Elloway at 519-824-1212 X 7344, or if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Police cruiser struck

On May 7, 2014 at 10:45 a.m., the Guelph Police went to Woolwich Street to investigate a two-car collision. It is alleged that a Buick sedan driven by a 66-year-old female from Arthur was travelling northbound on Woolwich Street when traffic ahead had come to a stop. The Buick struck the vehicle in front of it, which had stopped. This vehicle was a fully marked Guelph Police cruiser.

This collision caused significant damage to both vehicles.

Both drivers were taken to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Buick has been charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

Forgery charges result from Safety Standards Certificate investigations – update

On February 26, 2014 members of the Guelph Police Traffic Services Unit arrested three employees of Sayid Auto Collision and charged them with a number of fraud related criminal charges.

The investigation resulted from the discovery of irregularities with Safety Standards Certificates issued to two taxi cabs as part of the semi-annual Guelph Police taxi cab safety inspection initiative that took place in November, 2013.

Investigation has revealed that in addition to the two Safety Standards Certificates issued to the cabs, thirty-nine other Safety Standards Certificates were issued for motor vehicles between the months of September 2013 and November 2013 and it is alleged that all of the documents were fraudulent in nature.

A total of 131 Criminal Charges have now been laid against owner and employees of Sayid Auto Collision.

Sayid Zaid NAQAWE, 48 years of Guelph has been charged with forty-two counts of forgery (making a false document) and forty-four of uttering a forged document.

Sayid Ahmad MAHBOOBI, 27 years of Guelph has been charged with forty one counts of forgery (making a false document).

Sayed Hashem HASHEMI, 22 years of Guelph has been charged with four counts of uttering a forged document.

Oronato IANNONI, 54 years of Hamilton has been charged with two counts of forgery and two counts of uttering a forged document.

The Guelph Police Traffic Services Unit has been assisted in this extensive ongoing investigation by the Ministry of Transportation, the Ontario College of Trades, and the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council.

In addition to the criminal charges laid by the Guelph Police Service, the assisting agencies have laid charges under their respective provincial legislative authorities.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has laid numerous administrative Highway Traffic Act charges pertaining to responsibilities associated to Motor Vehicle Inspection Stations.

The Ontario College of Trades (OCT) has laid charges under the authority of the Ontario Colleges of Trades and Apprentices Act relating to the licensing and certification of employees working at Sayid Auto Collision. Several other businesses were investigated by the Ontario College of Trades and are also facing charges under the same act.

The Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) has laid charges under the Ontario Motor Vehicle Dealers Act relating to several allegations of “Curb siding” facilitated by Sayid Auto Collision.

The three males associated to Sayids Auto Collision will be appearing in Guelph court later this month.

The 54-year-old Hamilton male will be appearing in Guelph Court in June.

Shoplifter arrested

On May 7, 2014 at 1:09 p.m., the Guelph Police went to the Old Quebec Street Mall for the report of security fighting with a male. Police investigation alleges that the male had stolen liquor from the LCBO and ran from security when an attempt to arrest him was made.

Jacob PETERSEN, 19 years of New Lowell has been charged with theft under $5,000, assault and escape lawful custody. He will appear in court on June 20, 2014.

Break and enter

On May 7, 2014 at 9:14 a.m., the Guelph Police went to a Waterloo Avenue residence to investigate a break and enter. Culprit(s) entered a locked shed and stole a Trek mountain bike.

Break and enter

On May 7, 2014 at 7:40 p.m., the Guelph Police went to a vacant Victoria Road North residence to investigate a break and enter. Culprit(s) used a ladder to try to access a second floor window. The screen was damaged but no entry was gained.

Traffic Enforcement

On May 6, 2014, members of the Guelph Police Service conducted traffic enforcement in the area of Norfolk Street and Macdonell Street. Officers observed approximately 500 vehicles in a span of three hours. As a result, eight tickets were issued, for drive – hand held communication device and other various offences. The Guelph Police Service remind motorists to buckle up and refrain from using cell-phones while driving.’

Collision

On May 6, 2014 at 11:30 p.m., the Guelph Police Traffic Division went to a personal injury collision at the intersection of Silvercreek Parkway North and Willow Road. A 2001 Toyota Corolla operated by a 40-year-old Guelph female and a 2001 Dodge operated by a 51-year-old Guelph male were involved. It is alleged that the vehicles collided in a “T-bone” style of impact. The force of this impact sent the Corolla off the roadway and into the business located at the southwest corner of the intersection. The driver of the Corolla and a male passenger were transported to Guelph General Hospital with minor injuries. Both vehicles were demolished with an estimated value in excess of $35,000. At the time of this collision, a large portion of the city was subject to a large power outage. This affected a number of signalized intersections, including the one at the collision scene.

Guelph Police would like to remind the public that in the event that you approach a signalized intersection, which does not have power, you are required treat the intersection as a four-way stop. You MUST stop and only proceed when safe to do so.

Dumpster fire

On May 5, 2014 at 5:00 p.m., the Guelph Police and Guelph Fire Department responded to a dumpster fire on Scottsdale Drive. GFD extinguished the fire and no damage or injuries are reported. Police were able to identify two 11-year-old male youths as being responsible. Police spoke to the boys and their parents.

Break and enter

On May 5, 2014 at 7:09 p.m., the Guelph Police went to a Woolwich Street residence to investigate a break and enter. Culprit(s) entered an unlocked shed and stole power tools sometime over the last couple of days.

Apartment fire at 400 Waterloo Avenue

On May 3, 2014 at 12:27 p.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported apartment fire at the above noted location. Fire apparatus from five stations responded to the scene and found a stove on fire in unit #708. The building was evacuated and fire crews encountered moderate smoke within the unit itself. The fire was quickly brought under control by fire crews and the building ventilated. Only the resident of the unit was displaced.

There were no injuries to firefighting personnel or tenants. At this time, the cause of the fire is believed to be a result of cooking with oil in a pot. Estimated damage to the unit is undetermined at this time.

Guelph Police Service (GPS) and Guelph Wellington Medical Services (GWEMS) along with Victim Services were all on scene in support.
