Motor Vehicle Collision in Raleigh Township

Around 9:00 a.m. yesterday morning, police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Riverview Line.

A man lost control of his vehicle and struck a hydro pole. He was not injured. Damage was estimated at $8000.

The 36-year-old Chatham man was charged with careless driving.

Break and Enter in Harwich Township

The Chatham-Kent police are looking for information regarding a break and enter.

Sometime between Thursday, May 22 and Monday, May 26 unknown suspect(s) entered a home under construction on William Street. Once inside the suspect(s) stole copper wire and supplies with an estimated total value of $2750.

Man Charged with Domestic Related Offences

The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man in connection with a domestic related incident.

On Saturday, May 24th the man was arrested and charged with two counts of domestic assault. Yesterday morning, he was released from custody with conditions not to communicate directly or indirectly with a specific woman pending a future court date.

Around 4:30 p.m. yesterday, the man engaged a witness to the earlier assault and made an intimidating comment causing her to fear for her safety. The man also asked the witness to pass on a message to the woman. Just before 5:00 p.m. the man contacted the woman himself via her cell phone.

Just before 10:30 p.m. last night, the 34-year-old Chatham man was located. He has been charged with intimidation, obstruct justice and two counts of failing to comply. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Man Charged with Assault

The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man following as assault investigation in Chatham last night.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. a verbal argument began between two men living in the same complex. The argument escalated into a physical altercation when one of the men grabbed the other by the throat, pushed him out the door and kicked him after he fell. The 22-year-old victim sustained minor injuries.

Just before 9:00 p.m. police located the man responsible and he was arrested. The 22-year-old Chatham man has been charged with assault. He has been released with conditions pending a future court date.

Man Charged with Domestic and Firearms Related Offences

The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man in connection with a domestic disturbance in Chatham Township.

On May 20, 2014 the man was released from custody with several conditions, including a curfew, non-association with a specific woman and weapon prohibition.

On May 24, 2014 the man attended the woman’s residence in possession of a handgun and a verbal argument began. During the argument, the man began throwing items on the floor causing damage. The man assaulted the woman, however she was able to flee the residence and call for help. The woman sustained minor injuries.

Just before 8:00 a.m. yesterday morning, with the assistance of the Critical Incident Response Team, the man was located hiding inside the residence. The man was arrested without incident and the handgun was seized.

The 29-year-old Wallaceburg man has been charged with overcoming resistance to choking, unauthorized possession of a firearm, mischief under $5000, failing to comply with a prohibition order, two counts of assault and four counts of failing to comply. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Break and Enter on Patteson Ave, Chatham

Sometime between 7:00 pm Friday night and 9:00 am yesterday morning, unknown suspect(s) attended a warehouse on Patteson Avenue and gained entry by cutting a lock off the door. Once inside a BMW vehicle was stolen as well as numerous miscellaneous tools. Later in the day the vehicle was located and recovered however, the tools are still outstanding.

Impaired Driver

Last night at approximately 9:30 pm, the accused a 47 year old Pain Court man was observed driving a white GMC Sierra westbound on Edgar Street in Chatham. A witness believed that the accused was operating the vehicle while impaired and called police. Police subsequently attended for investigative purposes.

Police stopped the vehicle in question in a parking lot located on Queen Street. The investigating officer noticed that the accused slurred his speech while he spoke, and also detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.

As a result, the officer formed the opinion that the accused’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by the consumption of alcohol and arrested the accused for impaired driving. He was later transported to Police headquarters where he provided samples of his breath which were over double the legal limit. He was then charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and with over 80 mgs.

Construction Season

And as everyone knows, summer brings increased construction on our roads and highways. Here in Chatham-Kent, we currently have numerous roads under construction.

Please help keep our road workers safe:
– Slow down and obey the posted reduced speed limit
– Be prepared to stop suddenly as road surfaces and traffic patterns change frequently in work zones
– Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you as sudden stops are common

Speeding through construction zones is not only dangerous it can also be costly. Don’t forget, speeding fines are doubled when workers are present.

Sometime between May 22nd at 11:30 p.m. and May 23rd at 7:00 a.m. unknown suspect(s) entered a residence on Parkwood Drive. Once inside, the suspect(s) stole personal identification and a laptop.

Break and Enter in Chatham

The Chatham-Kent police are looking for information regarding a break and enter in Chatham.

Sometime over night on Thursday evening, unknown suspect(s) entered an unlocked shed located at a residence along Marion Avenue in Chatham. Stolen from this location was a 2006 Sierra Honda dirt bike red in colour along with a 250 CC Quad ATV black and green in colour.

Police Execute Search Warrant

On Wednesday, May 21, 2014, members of the Chatham-Kent Police Intelligence Unit executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act warrant at a residence on Woods Street in Chatham.

Four men were found in the residence and all were arrested. A search of their person as well as the residence resulted in the seizure of various illicit drugs, digital scales and packaging material.

A 46-year-old Chatham man has been charged with four counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of drug possession. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

A 24-year-old Chatham man has been charged with two counts of drug possession and two counts of failing to comply with release conditions. He was released pending a future court date.

A 28-year-old Chatham man has been charged with one count of drug possession. He was released pending a future court date.

A 31-year-old Chatham man has been charged with one count of drug possession. He was released pending a future court date.

Total street value of the drugs seized was approximately $6300.

Motor Vehicle Collision

Around 3:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, emergency crews responded to a two vehicle collision on Grand Avenue East near St. Clair Street in Chatham.

A 6 week old infant, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles, was transported to hospital as a precaution.

Total damage was estimated at $5000.

A 19-year-old woman was charged with failing to yield the right of way.

Man Charged with Attempt Murder

The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man in connection with a disturbance earlier this week in Wallaceburg.

On Tuesday, May 20, 2014 just before 12:30 a.m. police responded to an altercation between two men known to each other at a residence on Dufferin Avenue. A 19 year-old Walpole Island man was transported to the Sydenham District Hospital with life threatening head injuries. He has since been transferred to a hospital in London where he remains in critical condition.

This morning, a 20 year-old Walpole Island man was arrested. He has been charged with attempt murder. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Update: Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

The Chatham-Kent police have completed a next-of-kin notification with the family of a man who died in a collision on Wednesday night on Tecumseh Line between Dauphin Road and Pump Road.

At approximately 8:45 p.m. emergency crews responded to a single motor vehicle collision. The man lost control of his vehicle, which left the roadway, rolled and came to rest in a field.

The man has been identified as Theodore (Ted) WAGENAAR, 74 years, of Chatham, Ontario.

Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service offer their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Wagenaar.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

At approximately 8:45 p.m. last night, emergency crews responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Tecumseh Line between Dauphin Road and Pump Road.

A man and his female passenger were travelling eastbound on Tecumseh Line when he lost control of his white Lincoln. The vehicle left the roadway, rolled and came to rest in a field. The 74-year-old Chatham man was transported to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance with absent vital signs. Medical personnel attempted life saving measures but were unsuccessful and he was later pronounced dead. The 49-year-old Chatham woman was also transported to hospital for medical treatment of minor injuries.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service Traffic Unit is currently investigation the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Todd Trahan at 519-355-1092.
