Shovel Attacks – Vehicles Damaged

A Guelph man faces robbery, weapons and mischief charges after several incidents early Friday.

Approximately 2:20 a.m. police were called about a man walking in the street near Victoria Road North and Speedvale Avenue East carrying a shovel. The man struck three passing vehicles with the shovel, causing damage to each of them.

More than 20 minutes later, the same man entered a business near Victoria Road North and Eramosa Road. He tried unsuccessfully to buy cigarettes before threatening staff and eventually leaving with stolen products.

As officers were in the area searching for the suspect, police received a report of a man inside a business at Speedvale Avenue East and Stevenson Street North. After another unsuccessful attempt to buy items, he threatened staff while attempting to steal beer.

He was located in the area by officers a few minutes later and arrested.

A 42-year-old Guelph man is charged with two counts of robbery, three counts of mischief under $5,000, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, breach of probation and failing to comply with a release order. He was held for a bail hearing Friday.
