(LITTLE CURRENT, ON) – Two people have been arrested for weapons and drug related offences following a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check.
On Monday, April 28, 2025, at approximately 1:00 a.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE check at the Swing Bridge in Little Current. A vehicle came through the RIDE, and police observed open alcohol in the vehicle. Further investigation resulted in both the driver and passenger being arrested.
Additionally, police seized a handgun, an amount of suspected fentanyl with an estimated street value of $1,500, and an amount of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $200.
As a result, the driver, Peter SCHAJ, 61-years-old from Sudbury, was charged with:
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Possession of prohibited device for dangerous purpose
- Careless storage of firearm
- Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was prohibited weapon
- Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
- Possession of a prohibited device
- Carrying concealed weapon
- Carrying concealed prohibited device
- Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a prohibited device
- Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
The passenger, Luke WABEGIJIK, 24-years-old from Sheshegwaning First Nation, was charged with:
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Possession of prohibited device for dangerous purpose
- Careless storage of firearm
- Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a prohibited weapon
- Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a prohibited device
- Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
- Possession of a prohibited device
- Carrying concealed weapon
- Carry concealed prohibited device
- Possession of a Schedule I substance – opioid
- Possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine
- Passenger – fail to properly wear seatbelt
Both accused remain in custody, and are scheduled to appear in court today, April 28, 2025.
