2 Dead – Few Details Released

(WHITEWATER REGION TWP, ON) – The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating the deaths of two individuals in the Township of Whitewater Region.

On February 16, 2025, shortly after 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a call where a property owner located two deceased individuals. While the cause of death cannot yet be confirmed, investigators believe there is no threat to public safety.

The UOV Crime Unit is continuing the investigation with assistance of OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario (OCCO) and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OFPS).

The investigation is in the early stages and no further details can be released at this time.

Benjamin LEE – Drunk Driving

(WHITEWATER REGION TWP, ON) – An American motorist is facing Criminal Code (CC) charges after a driving complaint in the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment area.

On the afternoon of February 3, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the UOV OPP began investigating after a possible impaired driver was reported on Highway 17 in Whitewater Region Township. Police located the vehicle a short time later and conducted a traffic stop as it turned onto Murphy Road. The driver was arrested at the scene and transported to the detachment for testing. Test results were more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit.    

As a result of this incident 43-year-old Benjamin LEE of Chesapeake, VA, USA, has been charged with the following CC offences:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80mg plus

The accused had a driver’s licence suspension registered for 90 days and their vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on February 25, 2025.

John Adam NELSON Was Arrested

(WHITEWATER REGION TWP, ON) – A local motorist is facing Criminal Code (CC) charges after a single-vehicle collision in the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment area.

On January 25, 2025, at approximately 4:00 a.m., the UOV OPP responded to a single-vehicle collision after a vehicle entered the ditch on Rapid Road in Whitewater Region Township. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was not injured. The driver was arrested and transported to the detachment for testing.

As a result of this incident 45-year-old John Adam NELSON of Laurentian Hills has been charged with the following CC offences:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80mg plus

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on February 24, 2025.

Fatal Collision

(WHITEWATER REGION, ON) – The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor trailer on Highway 17 in Whitewater Region Township.

On January 14, 2025, at approximately 2:45 a.m., UOV OPP officers, Renfrew County paramedics and Whitewater Region firefighters responded to the two-vehicle collision on Highway 17 between Mountain Road and Sutherland Road. Preliminary investigation has found that a westbound passenger vehicle crossed into the lane of an eastbound tractor trailer. As a result of the collision the passenger vehicle caught fire. The driver of the passenger vehicle, a 22-year-old from North Algona- Wilberforce Township, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the tractor trailer was not seriously injured. 

The investigation is continuing in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. An OPP Collision Reconstructionist and Technical Collision Investigator are also assisting with the investigation along with OPP Forensic Identification Services.

As a result of the collision Highway 17 is currently closed between Highway 41 and County Road 8 in Cobden with local detours in place. The closure is expected to last until midday.
