Fatal Boat Incident Update – Deceased Identified

(TOWNSHIP OF MAPLETON, ON) – On July 26, 2020, at approximately 4:06 p.m. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a boating incident at Conestogo Lake, near Wellington County Road 11 in the Township of Mapleton. It was reported that a 13-year-old female sustained life-threatening injuries after being hit by a boat.

Rescuers pulled the unconscious victim from the water. Tania YONAN of Kitchener was pronounced dead at scene.

The cause of the incident is currently being investigated by OPP Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) and OPP Marine Unit officers. The lake and roadways remain open.

Updates will be provided when available.

Suspended Drunk Driver Charged – COUPE

(CHESLEY, ON) – On July 24, 2020 at 10:51 p.m., a South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer on patrol stopped a vehicle along 5th Street south east in Chesley. The officer found that the driver had been drinking alcohol.

Matthew COUPE, 24-years-old, of Hanover was charged with Operate over 80 milligrams, 4 counts of Driving while Prohibited, Obstruct Peace Officer and 2 counts of Driving while Suspended. The accused is scheduled to appear in court on September 30, 2020 to answer to the charges.

Kilo Of Methamphetamine – BENNINGER & VANDONKERSGOED

(WEST GREY TWP, ON) – Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crimes Unit (CSCU) and members of the Hanover Police Service worked together on a drug investigation that impacted communities in Grey County, Bruce County and Wellington County.

As a result of the investigation, members of the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) conducted a vehicle stop along Side road 5 in West Grey Township.

Following a search of the vehicle, police seized more than a kilogram of Methamphetamine and 336 Oxycodone pills. The combined, estimated value of the seized controlled substances is $108,350.00.

Police also seized a quantity of cash as offence related property.

Greg BENNINGER, 45-years-old, of Hanover was charged with:

Possession of Methamphetamine for the Purpose of Trafficking

Possession of Oxycodone for the Purpose of Trafficking

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on October 7, 2020 to answer to the charges.

Kris VANDONKERSGOED, 33-years-old, of West Grey Township was charged with:

Drunk Driving Charge Following Collision – SPENCE

(GEORGIAN BLUFFS, ON) – On July 26, 2020 at 4:10 a.m. Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a single motor vehicle rollover collision involving a white car on 13th Street West in Georgian Bluffs, Ontario.

Officers attended this scene and were assisted by the Inter Township Fire Department (Georgian Bluffs). The male driver was arrested for impaired driving and was transported to hospital via ambulance for treatment of minor injuries. The accused was then transported to the Grey Bruce OPP detachment in Chatsworth. A breath test, conducted by a qualified Intoxilyzer operator at the detachment, recorded readings over the legal limit of 80 mgs of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

As a result of this investigation, Grey Bruce OPP have charged Leeland SPENCE, 30 years-of-age, from Kemble, ON with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, section 320.14(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC) and operation while impaired with blood alcohol concentration 80 mgs or more, section 320.14(1)(b) CC.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is required to attend Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on October 1, 2020.

A passenger was transported to hospital via ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Repeat Offender Arrested After Stolen Truck Fire & Helicopter Search

(TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON, ON) – On July 26, 2020, at approximately 1:45 p.m., members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a truck fire on Guelph-Nichol Townline in Guelph-Eramosa Township. It was discovered that the truck had been reported stolen on July 25, 2020 in Oxford County.

As officers were investigating the first incident, they spotted a second stolen pick-up truck not far from the original scene. Police attempted to stop the stolen vehicle on Conservation Road in Guelph-Eramosa Township, but the driver fled the scene.

At approximately 6:00pm, police responded to a report of a suspicious person in the area of the Eramosa-Garafraxa Townline in Centre Wellington Township. Upon arrival, two suspects fled on foot and police recovered the second stolen truck.

Uniform officers set up containment and searched the area with the assistance of the Wellington County OPP Canine Unit, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and an OPP Aviation Services helicopter. Following a lengthy search, one suspect was located and taken into custody without incident. A second suspect remains outstanding. At this time, there is believed to be no threat to public safety.

Alexis REILLY, 36-years-old of Sarnia has been charged with Flight from Police, Possession of Property Obtained by a Crime, Fail to Comply with Probation Order and Driving While under Suspension. The accused was held for a bail hearing.

13 Year Old Killed In Boat Incident

One Airlifted Following Collision

(PERTH EAST, ON) – One person was seriously injured after a single vehicle collision on private property in the Township of Perth East last weekend.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on July 18 2020, the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Perth East Fire Department, and Perth County Paramedic Services responded to an injured person after the dirt bike they were riding at a private residence on Perth Line 43 in the Township of Perth East, collided with a structure.

The driver was air-lifted by Ornge Air Ambulance, and their injuries have been determined to be non-life-threatening.

No charges will be laid in this incident.

Two From Lucknow Facing Weapon Charges – ROBERTS & STEEPER

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged two individuals with weapons related offences after a traffic stop was conducted last weekend east of Clinton.

On Saturday, July 18, 2020 at approximately 8:17 p.m. a Huron County OPP officer was conducting RADAR patrol on Front Road when a known suspended driver passed by in a pickup truck.

A traffic stop was initiated and upon confirming the suspension the driver was placed under arrest for Driving While Under Suspension. A search incident to arrest resulted in police locating and seizing a set of brass knuckles from inside the vehicle.

Both the driver and passenger were subsequently arrested for possession of the prohibited weapon.

The driver, Colby ROBERTS, 28 years of age from Lucknow has been charged with: Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon, Occupant of a Motor Vehicle Knowing There Was a Prohibited Device, Possess Prohibited Weapon Contrary to Order, Fail to Comply with Undertaking and other driving related offences. He has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for September 28, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

Passenger, Kristen STEEPER, 27 years of age from Lucknow has been charged with Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon, Occupant of a Motor Vehicle Knowing There Was a Prohibited Device, Fail to Comply With Undertaking and Fail to Comply with Probation Order (2 counts). She was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for October 19, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

40 Year Old From Mildmay Facing Drunk Driving Charge – WALTER

(TOWNSHIP OF WELLINGTON NORTH, ON) – On July 11, 2020, at approximately 10:25 p.m. the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a possible impaired driver operating a pick-up truck on Wellington Road 2 in the Township of Wellington North.

Police located the vehicle and while speaking with the driver and determined that their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. A Roadside Screening Device test was conducted which resulted in a fail. The driver was transported to a local OPP Operation Centre for further testing.

Dean Michael WALTER, 40-years-old of Mildmay has been charged with Impaired – 80 Plus (mg of alcohol per 100 mL of blood) contrary to the Criminal Code. A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and 7-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice – Guelph on August 14, 2020.

During the course of the investigation, officers formed the opinion that the one of the drivers had consumed alcohol prior to the collision. A Roadside Screening Test was conducted which resulted in a fail. The driver was transported to a local OPP Operation Centre further testing.

Bryce Jonathan MCGOWAN, 42-years-old of Fergus has been charged with Impaired Operation – 80 Plus (mg of alcohol per 100 mL of blood) contrary to the Criminal Code.

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and 7-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice – Guelph on August 14, 2020.

(TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON, ON) – On July 16, 2020, at approximately 7:40 p.m. an individual attended the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Operation Centre on Charles Allan Way in Fergus to report an incident.

During the course of the investigation, officers formed the opinion that the driver had consumed alcohol prior to attending the detachment. A Roadside Screening Test was conducted which resulted in a fail. The driver was arrested and taken for further testing in the building.

Jordan NICHOLLS, 41-years-old of Fergus has been charged with Impaired Operation – 80 Plus (mg of alcohol per 100 mL of blood) contrary to the Criminal Code.

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and 7-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice – Guelph on August 21, 2020.

Nathaniel David HANSEN – 145 in an 80

(TOWNSHIP OF PUSLINCH, ON) – On July 11, 2020 at approximately 11:10 p.m., a Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was monitoring traffic and conducting radar on Wellington Road 35 near Concession 1 in Puslinch Township. The officer observed a southbound blue motor vehicle travelling at a speed that appeared to be well above the posted 80 km/h speed limit. The vehicle was locked on radar in excess of 145 km/h.

Nathaniel David HANSEN, 19-years-old of Guelph has been charged with Racing a Motor Vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant is scheduled to appear in Guelph at the Ontario Court of Justice – Provincial Offences Court on October 7, 2020. The vehicle and driver’s licence were seized for a period of seven days as per statute.

Officer Struck In Head

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has arrested and charged a Central Huron resident with Assault Police and other criminal charges following an incident that took place in Clinton recently.

On Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at approximately 1:00 p.m. Huron OPP responded to an apartment complex on James Street to investigate a report of a male that was causing a disturbance with another tenant. Investigators determined the male had threatened and gestured to cause harm against another tenant at the complex.

When the investigating officer attempted to apprehend the suspect he immediately resisted arrest and struck the officer in the head. Further, the accused made threats toward the officer.

The injured officer was treated at a local hospital and was released with a head injury.

Jesse HILL, 30 years of age from Clinton has been charged with: Assault Cause Bodily Harm, Assault and two counts of Utter Threats.

He remains in custody with a court appearance scheduled for July 24, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.
