Gunfire Mystery in Roseneath — OPP Blame Social Media, Not Their Silence #FilmThePolice #FTP #ItsTime

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is aware of misinformation currently circulating on social media and is providing the following clarification.

On October 21, 2025, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Northumberland OPP arrested one individual on County Road 45 in Roseneath in connection with a trespassing complaint. This incident was the subject of a previously issued media release titled “Person Arrested for Trespass and Mischief.”

On October 22, 2025, at approximately 3:15 a.m., officers responded to a report of what was believed to be possible gunshots in the area of Macklin Road and County Road 45. Officers patrolled the area, but no further sounds were heard, and no evidence of gunfire was located. Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Please reference occurrence number E251436097.

Northumberland OPP have been made aware of social media reports that officers were involved in a firearms incident and that one person was shot and taken into custody. This information is false. It appears to stem from a misunderstanding or confusion of the two separate incidents described above.

The OPP reminds the public to rely on verified sources for accurate information and to be cautious of unverified reports circulating online.

Joshua SMOKE Was Arrested

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has charged an individual following a complaint regarding a person on private property.

On October 21, 2025, shortly before 10:00 p.m., officers responded to a report of an individual trespassing on residential property on County Road 45 in Roseneath. The caller also reported that the person was also causing damage to a door at the property.

Police attended the location and began an investigation into the incident. A description of the subject of complaint was provided to officers and following patrols of the area, a person matching the description was located on County Road 45 and taken into custody at around 11:45 p.m. There was an increased police presence in the area at this time to assist with the investigation.

As a result, Joshua SMOKE (21) from Roseneath, has been charged with:

–      Trespassing at night

–      Mischief under $5,000

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in November.

At this time, Northumberland OPP advise that this in an isolated incident and not connected to the recent break and enter investigations which are on-going.
