Scammer Taxidermist Arrested After $500,000 Wasn’t Enough

A male has been arrested after fraudulently claiming the deceased exotic animals for his taxidermist business were no longer viable due to a faulty refrigeration system.

On Monday, September 11, 2023, investigators with the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit (FCU) were contacted by an insurance company regarding multiple claims filed by Artistry in Motion Taxidermy, that they believed to be fraudulent. The owner of the business purchased deceased exotic animals such as tigers, lions and monkeys, after they died of natural causes, for use as art pieces.

In May of 2022, the owner made a claim to the insurance company for a weather-related failure of his refrigeration system, which he claimed resulted in a financial loss of over $500,000 of animals.

In June of 2023, the owner made a second claim to the insurance company for another refrigeration system failure, which he claimed resulted in a financial loss of over $700,000 of animals.

Investigation into zoos, ranches, and safaris both in Canada and in Africa, named by the suspect, revealed that the suspect had fraudulently produced purchase invoices, created fictitious zoos and safaris, and inflated the value of the deceased animals.

Cyril DSOUZA, age 65 from Uxbridge is charged with: Fraud Over $5000 x2, and Utter Forged Document x2.

He was released on an Undertaking.

Victim Kidnapped Off Street For Sex Slavery Rescued – FORD & BROWN Arrested

Two males are in custody for kidnapping after they forced a female into a vehicle and drove to a hotel in Mississauga.

On Sunday, March 31, 2024, at approximately 10:40 p.m., members of West Division responded to a check on well being call in the area of Kings Crescent and Burcher Road, in Ajax. Police were contacted after the victim did not return to her residence for her curfew. The victim was last seen entering a vehicle with unknown males.

Further investigation revealed that the victim had been communicating with a suspect male via the social media app Yubo, earlier in the day. The victim made arrangements to meet with the suspect in the afternoon, but the suspect did not show up. Later that evening the victim was out walking with a friend when the suspect approached her in a vehicle, being driven by another male. The suspect forced the victim into the vehicle and fled the area. The victim later texted a friend that she needed help and was being forced into the sex trade.

Police located both the victim and the two suspects at a hotel in Mississauga. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident, and the victim was transported to a place of safety.

The victim did not sustain any physical injuries.

Oneil FORD, age 19 from Oshawa is charged with: Kidnapping.

Deshawn BROWN, age 20 from Pickering is charged with: Kidnapping.

Both males were held for a bail hearing.

Victim Lured Then Beaten With Baseball Bats

Assault charge after victim lured to home

An Ajax man faces an assault charge after another man was lured to a south-end address where he was beat up.

Last Thursday, shortly before midnight, police were called for reports of a disturbance at a downtown bar. Officers determined this to be a consensual fight and all parties were sent on their way.

Approximately four hours later, the girlfriend of one of the combatants called police from Guelph General Hospital. She said after officers separated the parties, she got a text from one of the other involved males asking her and her boyfriend to attend an address on Scottsdale Drive to discuss the situation. When they arrived in an Uber they were met by several males, two of whom were holding baseball bats.

The male who had sent the text attacked the victim, punching him in the face and throwing him to the ground where he struck his head. He was then repeatedly punched and stomped on by some of the other males. The victim sustained a concussion and several cuts and bruises.

Investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year-old Ajax man, who is charged with assault causing bodily harm. He will appear in court May 14. The investigation is ongoing to identify the other involved males.

Woman caught driving three days after impaired arrest

A Guelph woman faces a new charge and had her vehicle impounded after she was caught driving three days after her arrest for impaired driving by drugs.

Approximately 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, officers on patrol queried a licence plate of a vehicle parked near a known drug house in the city’s north end. The registered owner of the vehicle is suspended from driving as a result of her arrest Saturday evening.

A short time later the vehicle was observed driving away from the residence and was pulled over. A 32-year-old Guelph woman is further charged with driving while suspended. Her vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Shopping spree with stolen credit card

A Guelph couple have been arrested after going on a shopping spree with a stolen credit card.

On March 26, the two were caught on surveillance video using a stolen card to make or attempt to make several purchases at various businesses. More than $300 in gift cards were purchased from one business, then used at another business after the credit card was suspended for suspicious activity.

On Tuesday a 38-year-old Guelph man and 34-year-old Guelph woman were arrested on several counts of possessing stolen property and fraudulent use of a credit card. The woman will appear in court May 21. The man, who also faces several counts of breaching probation, was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

Slow Week For West Grey “Police” – Weekly Update

On March 25th and 26th officers from West Grey were scheduled to attend a trial for a 36 year old with an address in Paisley who was accused of crimes committed in West Grey.

The accused failed to attend the trial and a warrant for his arrest was issued.  The male party turned himself in at the court in Walkerton on March 27, 2024 and he was charged with Failing to attend court and held for a bail hearing. He was subsequently released and will return to court to answer to the original charges and the new charge in April.

On March 31st just before midnight West Grey officers on patrol initiated a traffic stop on Highway 6 north of Durham.  The driver refused to engage with officers or exit his vehicle. Once police were able to access the driver he showed clear signs of impairment.  He refused the roadside demand and was transported to the West Grey Police Station where he refused the breath demand.  The 47 year old from Bruce County was charged accordingly under the Criminal Code.  The vehicle he was driving was towed from the scene and impounded.  His license was already suspended and was additionally suspended as is the case when one refuses a demand.  The accused faces a number of charges under the Highway Traffic Act and the Cannabis Control Act.  He will appear in court in April to answer to all charges.

West Grey officers issued forty one charges under the Highway Traffic Act during the Easter weekend traffic safety campaign.  There were no reported collisions on our roadways in the past week and speed enforcement efforts will continue.

Nigel SOARES – Drunk Driving

(COX TOWNSHIP, ON) – A driver was charged with impaired driving after police receiving a traffic complaint from another driver.

On March 30, 2024, shortly after 9:30 a.m., members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a traffic complaint about a possible impaired driver on Highway 69, Cox Township, south of Sudbury.

The vehicle was located and stopped by police. The driver was arrested for impaired driving, then transported to the Greater Sudbury Police Service for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Nigel SOARES, 55 years-of-age, from Gravenhurst, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Dangerous operation

The accused was release and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on April 24, 2024, in Sudbury.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Shots Fired – Two Arrested – Details Released

(WALPOLE ISLAND FIRST NATION, ON) – On April 1, 2024, at 3:50 p.m., members of the Walpole Island Police Service (WIPS) and Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted regarding an individual being shot at by two individuals on Dump Road.    

Officers attended and confirmed no individuals had been injured. Empty firearm casings were observed on the ground in the area. A description of the suspects was obtained, which led to the officers locating and arresting them without incident.

Seneca DAY, 40-years-old of Walpole Island First Nation, and Tyler TAYLOR, 27-years-old of Chatham, have been charged with the following:

  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose,
  • Pointing a firearm and,
  • Discharge firearm with intent.

DAY is also facing two counts of possession of a schedule 1 substance after a search revealed a quantity of suspected cocaine and methamphetamine.

The accused have been remanded into custody following a bail hearing.

Fatal Hit & Run – Suspect At Large

(WHITBY, ON) – Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Highway Safety Division (HSD) – Whitby Detachment, are investigating a collision that resulted in one fatality.

On Tuesday April 2, 2024, at approximately 9:50 p.m., the OPP were called to a collision on Highway 412 southbound near Taunton Road in the Region of Durham. The collision involved a pedestrian and at least one vehicle.

The pedestrian, a 50-year-old from Deep River was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and may not be aware they hit a person. Foul play is not suspected.

The OPP-HSD Traffic Support Unit is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

BOLO: Black Car, Plate: DAMZ 252 – Homicide Investigation

(CALEDON, ON) – Members of the Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have identified a deceased individual and deemed their death a homicide.

On April 1, 2024, officers from the Caledon Detachment responded to a report of a deceased individual in the area of Chinguacousy Road and King Street in the Town of Caledon.

A post-mortem examination was conducted on April 2, 2024, which determined the death was the result of a homicide. The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old David ROBSON, who was reported missing from the Township of Melancthon on March 25, 2024.

Officers have not located the deceased’s vehicle, which is described as a 2017 black Kia Sportage, Ontario licence plate DAMZ 252.

The OPP does not believe there is a risk to public safety as investigators do not consider this to be a random incident. However, members of the public are reminded to be aware of their surroundings at all times.

The investigation is ongoing by the Dufferin Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with the assistance of OPP Forensic Identification Services and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Joseph CATAFORD – Drunk Driving

(MOONBEAM, ON) – A Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program in Moonbeam led to the arrest of driver for impaired driving.

On March 30, 2024, shortly after 5:00 p.m., the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began a RIDE program on Highway 581 in Moonbeam. 

Approximately 20 minutes after starting, a vehicle entered the RIDE program, and police determined that the driver had been consuming an alcohol beverage. The driver was arrested and transported to the Kapuskasing detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Joseph CATAFORD, 47 years of age of Moonbeam, was charged with the following:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 29, 2024 in Kapuskasing. The accused was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Keegan LAUZON Arrested

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – An individual was charged following an investigation into an incident of mischief in Simcoe.

At approximately 5:46 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024, officers from Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment were dispatched to investigate a report of a mischief in progress on Colborne Street South in Simcoe, Norfolk County.

It was determined that an individual was throwing debris onto the road, posing a hazard to motorists in the vicinity. Additionally, the individual had caused damage to property at nearby businesses.

Responding officers located the individual at a location on Colborne Street South and took them into custody without incident.

Charged with the following alleged offences is 22-year-old Keegan LAUZON of Norfolk County:

  • Mischief – destroys or damages property (three counts),
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Simcoe on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.

Repeat Offender Arrested Again – Andrew SIMS

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – An individual was charged following an investigation into an incident of mischief in Simcoe.

At approximately 6:33 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2024, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment investigated a report of property damage on Queensway East in Simcoe, Norfolk County.

It was determined that an individual attended the address between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. During this time, they caused damage to a vehicle parked on the property.

Later, officers located the individual at a residence on Third Avenue in Simcoe, Norfolk County. They were then taken into custody without incident.

Charged with the following alleged offences is 37-year-old Andrew SIMS of Haldimand County:

  • Fail to comply with Probation Order,
  • Fail to comply with Release Order – other than to attend court,
  • Mischief under $5,000.

The accused was detained in custody to appear at a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Simcoe.

4 Arrested In Pokemon Theft

Investigators with the York Regional Police #4 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged one adult and three youths in connection with a robbery in the City of Vaughan.

On Saturday, March 30, 2024, shortly after 10 p.m., police responded to a parking lot in the Jane Street and Rutherford Road area for a report of a robbery. When officers arrived at the scene, it was learned that the victim planned to sell a highly valued Pokémon trading card.

When the victim arrived, two suspects exited a vehicle and approached him. As he produced the Pokémon card, one of the suspects grabbed it and ran back toward the vehicle, where two additional suspects were waiting.

The victim attempted to give chase when one suspect brandished a knife. The victim was able to obtain a licence plate prior to the vehicle fleeing.

The vehicle was located and followed into the City of Toronto where an arrest was safely made in the Parliament Street and Richmond Street East area.

At the time of these offences, one accused was already before the courts on unrelated charges and bound by an Undertaking with conditions. A second accused also before the courts on unrelated charges was bound by two separate Probation Orders.

Chatham-Kent, Ontario: The Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to 136 calls for service in the last 24 hours. Eight person was arrested and seven on an outstanding warrant.

Man Arrested for Failing to Attend Court CK24014376

At 10:17 a.m., police located the man on Erie Street North in Wheatley and confirmed he was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court in relation to a September 2023 assault investigation.

The 51-year-old Wheatley man was arrested and released with a new court date of May 6, 2024. He is currently facing the following charges: assault and uttering threats.

Man Arrested for Assault CK24014390

On March 31, 2024, the man and the woman were engaged in a verbal argument while walking on King Street in Chatham. The argument escalated when the man assaulted the woman on two occasions, which was witnessed by bystanders. The man left the area prior to police arrival. When he was not located a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On April 1, 2024, at 11:27 a.m., police located the man on Wellington Street in Chatham and confirmed he was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

The 41-year-old Chatham-Kent man was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was held pending a bail hearing. He is currently facing the following charges: two counts of assault.

Woman Arrested for Failing to Attend Court CK24014411

At 2:06 p.m., police located the woman on Wellington Street in Chatham and confirmed she was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court in relation to two theft investigations.

The 33-year-old Chatham-Kent woman was arrested and released with a new court date of April 9, 2024. She is currently facing the following charges: two counts of theft, and two counts of possession of stolen property.

At 7:19 p.m., the man attended Chatham-Kent Police headquarters and turned himself in to the police. The man was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court on September 27, 2023, in relation to a 2019 intimate partner violence investigation.

The 26-year-old Chatham man was arrested and held pending a bail hearing. He is currently facing the following charges: two counts of uttering threats and two counts of failing to attend court.

Man Arrested for Fraud CK24014461

At 7:31 p.m., police attended a parking lot on Richmond Street in Chatham to investigate suspicious activity.

Upon arrival, officers located the man and confirmed he was wanted on an outstanding warrant related to an August 2023 fraud investigation where money was removed from a bank account using stolen cheques.

The man was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property, uttering forged documents, identity fraud and fraud under $5000. He was released with a future court date of April 29, 2024.

Man Arrested for Theft CK24014475

At 9:04 p.m., as a result of a traffic stop on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg, police located the man and confirmed he was wanted on an outstanding warrant in relation to a February 2024 theft investigation.

The 45-year-old Walpole Island man was arrested and charged with theft and possession of stolen property. He was released with a future court date of May 6, 2024.

Man Arrested on OPP Warrant CK24014496

On April 2, 2024, at 1:38 a.m., police responded to a disturbance on Oak Street in Wallaceburg.

Officers attended, located the man, and confirmed he was wanted on an outstanding warrant held by the Lambton Ontario Provincial Police.

The 28-year-old Ontario man was arrested and turned over the Ontario Provincial Police.

2 Broken Arms & Leg In Violent Home Invasion

Man arrested after serious assault

A Guelph man has been arrested after a serious assault late last month that left the victim with two broken arms and a broken leg.

Shortly after 9 a.m. March 23 emergency services were called to a home on Elizabeth Street near Huron Street. A resident claimed he had seen two men outside near his vehicle and went to confront them when one struck him several times with a baseball bat.

Further investigation revealed the victim was actually asleep when two men entered the home and went to his bedroom, where one began to hit him with an aluminum bat. The victim’s teenage son woke and tried to intervene, but one of the men pulled out a knife and held it towards him.

The victim sustained two broken arms and a fractured leg and required several surgeries.

One of the suspects was located downtown Friday morning and arrested. A 40-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and being unlawfully in a dwelling. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

Man assaulted with dog spray

A Guelph woman faces several charges after a man was sprayed in the face with dog spray.

Just after 3 p.m. Sunday, two men were involved in a physical fight inside a social service agency downtown. Outside, the fiancé of one of the men approached the other man and sprayed him in the face, causing him to scream in pain. Police located and arrested the woman a short distance away.

A 27-year-old Guelph woman is charged with assault with a weapon and four counts of failing to comply with court orders. She was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court April 19.

Burglar woke homeowner before fleeing

A Guelph man was arrested after a homeowner was awakened Tuesday morning by a stranger poking her.

Just before 1 a.m., a resident in the area of Edinburgh Road South and Water Street called 911 to report she was asleep when a man woke her by poking her in the back. He told her he had broken in to get something to eat and then left the residence. Glasses and a watch were also taken. The victim in her 60s was not physically injured.

Officers arrived quickly and located the suspect on the front steps of another nearby home. He was placed under arrest and the victim’s property was recovered.

A 21-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter and trespassing at night. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.

The Guelph Police Service encourages all residents to ensure their doors and windows are closed and secured overnight.

Drug, weapons charges following arrest

A Guelph man faces drug and weapons charges after he was arrested Saturday on an outstanding warrant.

Shortly after 9 a.m. police were called to a downtown restaurant to remove a male sleeping in the bathroom. Investigation revealed he was wanted for missing a court date in early February on 20 charges.

He was arrested on the outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court. A subsequent search of the man’s property revealed a pellet gun, brass knuckles, a knife and a box cutter as well as small amounts of suspected fentanyl and hashish.

The 33-year-old Guelph man is further charged with four counts of possessing controlled substances, unauthorized possession of a weapon, three counts of breaching probation and failing to comply with a bail order. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

Driver involved in several gas drive-offs

The Guelph Police Service is investigating a male involved in several gas drive-off thefts in Guelph and surrounding areas.

On March 23, just before 6 p.m., staff from a gas station on Woodlawn Road West reported a male filling his van and several gasgas drive off suspect cans and driving off without paying. The total theft was more than $300. Investigation revealed the same vehicle was involved in a similar theft February 13 from a west-end gas station during which $260 in fuel was stolen.

The involved vehicle is a white GMC Safari cargo van. It had different licence plates in both incidents, but both plates had been reported as missing from the same Toronto business. The male was described as white, in his 40s with a medium build and wearing a black jacket and jeans or dark pants.

Police in several neighbouring jurisdictions are also investigating gasoline thefts believed to involve the same male and vehicle.

Three impaired arrests during long weekend

Three motorists were arrested for impaired driving over the long weekend, including one who also faces a drug charge.

Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, a vehicle was stopped after leaving a licensed establishment in the west end. The officer detected an odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath. After failing a roadside test, the driver was transported to the police station where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 27-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

Approximately 7:40 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a driving complaint in the area of Speedvale Avenue West and Edinburgh Road North. The vehicle was stopped and the driver determined to be wanted for missing a court date earlier in the month.

The driver was arrested on the outstanding warrant and was observed to be showing signs of drug impairment. At the police station she was examined by a drug recognition expert who determined her ability to operate a vehicle was impaired. She refused to provide a blood or urine sample for further analysis.

During a search of the woman’s property three small baggies of suspected heroin were located.

A 32-year-old Guelph woman is charged with impaired driving, failing to attend court, possessing a controlled substance and refusing to comply with a demand. She was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court April 19.

At 3:40 p.m. Monday, police were called for a collision in the parking lot of the Beer Store on Woolwich Street. Investigation revealed a driver was leaving the parking lot when she lost control of her vehicle, which mounted the curb and struck a cement pole.

After failing a roadside test she was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed she had more than the legal amount of alcohol in her system. A 28-year-old Guelph woman is charged with impaired driving.

Each of the suspects had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.

Teens Send 2 Police Officers To Hospital With Serious Injuries

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police West Criminal Investigations Unit has charged three young persons following a stolen vehicle investigation that left two officers with serious injuries.

At approximately 11:15 pm on March 29, officers observed a vehicle that had been reported stolen traveling near Woodfield Drive and Merivale Road.

As more officers arrived in the area, the suspect vehicle accelerated to avoid police, however ended up striking a police cruiser head-on. Both officers from the vehicle sustained serious injuries and have since been released from hospital.

Three young persons (who cannot be named as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act), were charged with several criminal offences:

Driver:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime;
  • Operation (of a vehicle) causing bodily harm;
  • Breach of probation;
  • Flight from police;
  • Obstruction;
  • Assault peace officer; and
  • Assault peace officer and wound/maim/disfigure or endanger life.

Passenger 1:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime; and
  • Failure to comply with release order.

Passenger 2:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime.

Both passengers are set to appear in court at a later date; and the driver is to appear in court today.
