Fabian RODNEY – Drunk Driving

(THAMES CENTRE, ON) – Driver facing charges after traffic complaint on Highway 401 Westbound.

On December 15, 2024, at 5:00 a.m., members of the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to the Westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Thames Centre, for the report of a possible impaired driver.

The vehicle was located stopped on the centre median shoulder.

As a result, Fabian RODNEY, a 39-year-old of London, has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

·      Operation while impaired – alcohol

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice to speak to the charges on February 27, 2025.

The Middlesex OPP wants to remind the public that if you see anything suspicious or suspect an impaired driver you should contact the Ontario Provincial Police or your nearest police authority immediately.

31 Year Old From Morris-Turnberry Arrested For Domestic Mischief

(MORRIS-TURNBERRY, ON) – On December 12th, 2024, members of the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated a matter involving intimate partners in the Township of Morris-Turnberry.

As a result of the investigation, OPP learned that the involved suspect had allegedly committed a criminal act against their partner.

A 31-year-old individual from Morris-Turnberry has been charged under the Criminal Code with the following offence:

–      Mischief – Domestic.

The accused was processed and later released from custody with a court date scheduled for the Goderich Ontario Court of Justice on January 13, 2025.

More Suspensions At RIDE

On Monday, December 16th, 2024, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks in the cities of St.Catharines and Niagara Falls.

Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 500 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening.  In total, 15 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis.  Two drivers provided a sample resulting in an “Alert” and subsequently had their licence suspended for a period of 3 days.

In addition to the two roadside suspensions, a 75-year-old driver from the city of Niagara Falls was charged with Operation While Prohibited as a result of a prior impaired conviction and having his licence still under suspension.

Several Provincial Offence Notices (tickets) were also issued to drivers for various traffic related offences.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E.

Impaired driving remains the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.

Belleville Police Daily Update

Arrest made in motor vehicle collision

The Belleville Police Service has made an arrest in an investigation regarding a vehicle striking a house. As reported on 22 November, 2024, police received a report of a vehicle that struck a residence on Marsh Drive. Upon arrival, the vehicle was still running, but the driver had fled the scene.

Belleville Police investigated the incident and identified 20-year-old Landon Galvin of Prince Edward County as the suspect. A warrant was issued for Galvin, and he surrendered himself to police on 16 December. Galvin was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief over $5000, as well as charges under the Highway Traffic Act. Galvin will appear in court on 23 January, 2025.

Warrants

On 16 December, 2024, an officer was on general patrol in the east end of Belleville when they observed a 50-year-old female who was wanted on warrants.  Terri-Lynn LaFrance from Belleville, who was wanted for failing to comply with her release conditions stemming from an incident in April this year for possession of controlled substances.  LaFrance was transported to Belleville Police Service and then released on an undertaking with a court date on 30 January, 2025.

Do You Recognize These Theft Suspects

On December 11th, 2024 the Sarnia Police Service was contacted by a retailer on Quinn Drive in relation to a robbery which had occured within the store.  Two males entered the store and loaded a shopping cart with power tools and proceeded to leave the store.

While leaving the store, one of the males brandished a hatchet (which was stolen from within the store) in a threatening manner when confronted by store security.

Suspect #1 is described as south Asain/middle eastern decent. Approximately 40 years old. 6 foot tall with an average build.  He has black hair and full beard.  He is wearing a black hat, black coat with hood and black Adidas pants with white stripes and white running shoes.  Suspect #1 is the individual brandishing a small hatchet.

Suspect #2 is described as south Asian/middle eastern decent .  Approximately 30-40 years old.  6 foot tall with an average build.  He has black hair and a black goatee with facial stubble. He is wearing a black hoodie, grey cargo pants and a brown ball cap.  He has white air pod headphones in his ears.  Suspect #2 is pushing the shopping cart of merchandise behind suspect #1 as they exit.

Two Arrested For Bail Violations – Names Relased

The Windsor Police Service has arrested two drug trafficking suspects for violating their bail conditions.

In February 2024, Ryan Lawrence Langlois was granted bail on multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x 3). Langlois was placed on house arrest and electronic monitoring.

In November 2024, Sabrina Kathleen Klippenstein was granted bail on multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x 2). Klippenstein was placed on house arrest at a residence in Tilbury.

Bail compliance officers investigated and found Langlois had breached the conditions of his release order and removed his GPS monitor. On December 13, 2024, police located and arrested Langlois at a residence in the 400 block of Glengarry Avenue.

He has been charged with failure to comply with a release order (x 2), as well as mischief under $5,000.

During the arrest of Langlois, officers located Klippenstein in the residence and found her to be in violation of her house arrest conditions. Klippenstein was subsequently charged with failing to comply with a release order.

The bail compliance officers are part of the Offender Management Unit, a partnership between the Windsor and LaSalle Police Services launched in March 2024. This team supervises high-risk individuals placed under house arrest, curfew, or electronic monitoring – and ensures that those who breach their judicial release orders are held accountable.  The Offender Management Unit is supported through a grant from the Government of Ontario, as part of the provincial government’s strategy to strengthen Ontario’s bail system.

$40,000 Drug Bust

An investigation by the Windsor Police Service has led to the arrest of three suspects and the seizure over $40,000 in cash and drugs.

On December 13, 2024, officers from the Windsor Police Drugs and Guns Enforcement Unit (DIGS) obtained a search warrant for a residence in the 300 block of Glengarry Avenue where trafficking was suspected to occur. Shortly after 2 p.m., with assistance from the Emergency Services Unit (ESU), officers entered the residence to execute the warrant.

Upon entry, officers arrested a 34-year-old male, 27-year-old male, and 24-year-old female suspected of trafficking.

Following the arrest, officers conducted a search of the residence. The search returned 122.5 grams of fentanyl, 15.4 grams of cocaine, 36.1 grams of crack cocaine, and 34.4 grams of crystal methamphetamine. The total value of drugs seized in the operation was $37,839.

Officers also seized a set of brass knuckles, four cellphones, four digital scales, packaging materials, and $3,340 in Canadian currency.

Velman Santos, 34, Sunday Atahir, 27, and Mary Atahir, 24, have each been charged with:

• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, namely fentanyl
• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, namely cocaine
• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, namely crack cocaine
• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, namely crystal methamphetamine 

Santos has also been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon (x 6), disobeying a lawful order, and failure to comply with a probation order.

Sunday Atahir has also been charged with failure to comply with a release order.

Armed Robbery at Cambridge Centre Mall – Suspects At Large

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police are investigating a robbery at a Cambridge mall.

On December 16, 2024, at approximately 8:15 p.m., police responded to reports of a jewelry store robbery at Cambridge Centre Mall on Hespeler Road.

Three unknown masked males entered the business armed with hammers, smashed the display cases and stole merchandise.

The suspects are believed to have fled the parking lot area in an awaiting getaway car.

The three suspects were described as brown males, thin build, and believed to be late teens or early 20’s. The suspects were carrying duffel bags at the time of the incident.

There were no physical injuries reported.

The investigation is ongoing by WRPS’ Robbery Team.

Teens Arrested After Stabbing Prank

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police have charged two youths after a misleading call was made to 9-1-1.

On December 15, 2024, at approximately 7:20 a.m., police received a report of a stabbing incident that had taken place in Kitchener’s Victoria Park.

Through extensive investigation, it was determined that the alleged stabbing did not take place and that the call to police was made intentionally to initiate a response from emergency services.

As a result of the investigation, a 13-year-old youth and a 14-year-old youth, both from Waterloo, were arrested and charged with Public Mischief.

The Waterloo Regional Police would like to remind members of the public to only call 9-1-1 if there is an immediate risk to the safety of people or property.

This service quickly links callers to Police, Fire and/or Ambulance Services. When a citizen calls 9-1-1, the goal is to ensure the appropriate Emergency Service responds as quickly as possible. When misused, it ties up resources that may be needed at other serious and life-threatening incidents.

Man With Gun Arrested After Making Death Threats – Name Released

A 34-year-old male has been arrested after making threats in Pickering.

On Saturday, December 14, 2024, members of West Division responded to the area of Spruce Hill Road and Shadybrook Drive for an armed person. The suspect was making threats to shoot people and was believed to be in possession of a firearm. Officers arrived on scene and located the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and a firearm was located in the vehicle.

Once recovered, the weapon was determined to be a replica firearm.   

Randy HEARD, age 34, of Pickering is charged with: Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm x3; Uttering Threats to Cause Damage to Property; Possession of Weapons Dangerous; Use of Imitation Firearm During Commission of an Offence and Pointing a Firearm.

 He was held for a bail hearing.

16 Impaired Drivers Arrested By DRPS

DRPS completed its fourth week of the 2024 Festive RIDE program, stopping more than 3,500 vehicles and charging 16 drivers with impaired driving offences.

The DRPS RIDE team conducted spot checks across the Region with the following totals (the numbers in brackets reflect 2023 fourth week totals for comparison):

Members from the Durham Regional Police Service Board, Willie Woo and Mark Welch, joined the Chief and officers on the RIDE line to thank motorists for driving sober.

Week four of the RIDE campaign saw 16 impaired drivers taken off our roadways.  This week, the RIDE team arrested a G1 driver and their qualified driver for impaired driving offences.  The law requires qualified drivers to be fully licensed drivers and have a blood alcohol concentration less than 50 mg per 100 mL. We remind everyone, “if you see something, say something.”

Impaired driving is an emergency, please call 9-1-1 if you suspect an impaired driver.

Note: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a criminal impaired driving offence will have their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.

Child Pedestrain Suffers Life Threatening Injuries #PedestrianLivesMatter

LONDON, ON (December 16, 2024) – A young boy is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a motor vehicle collision late this afternoon in the south end of the city.

Shortly before 4 p.m., on Monday, December 16, 2024, emergency crews responded to a serious motor vehicle collision in the area of Longwoods and Murray roads involving a pedestrian.

A young child was transported to hospital by paramedic services with life-threatening injuries.

All involved parties remained at the scene.

Longwoods Road was closed between Colonel Talbot and Kilbourne roads for a period of time.

The investigation has been reassigned to the London Police Service Traffic Management Unit and is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone who may have dash-cam footage or video surveillance in the Longwoods Road near Murray Road between 3:45 – 4:05 p.m., or information that can assist with the investigation, to contact police. 

The investigation is in its early stages, and more information will be released as appropriate

Two Suspended At RIDE

Members of the Guelph Police Service participated in a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) event Saturday evening.

Approximately 550 motorists were stopped and checked for sobriety. Twelve roadside tests were conducted on drivers who had been drinking, resulting in two three-day driver’s licence suspensions for motorists who registered a ‘warn’ on the roadside device. Such a reading indicates a blood-alcohol content of between 50 and 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, or a blood-alcohol level above zero for novice drivers.

One driver was found to have cannabis readily available and was charged under the Cannabis Control Act. Several Highway Traffic Act offences were observed, resulting in warnings for failing to wear a seatbelt and driving while using a handheld device.

During the annual Festive RIDE program, increased spot checks will continue to be held throughout the holiday season.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.

Second Degree Murder Charge and Arrest in 1996 Stabbing Death of Christopher Smith

(Ottawa) – A Vancouver man has been arrested and charged with second degree murder in relation to the stabbing death of Christopher Smith in 1996. A review of the cold case by the Ottawa Police Service Homicide Unit detectives and advanced DNA technology were significant to the laying of this charge.

73-year-old Lawrence DIEHL was arrested in Vancouver on December 10 and returned to Ottawa by investigators on December 13. He appeared in court on December 14.

Background

In the early morning hours of April 12, 1996, 22-year-old Christopher Smith was stabbed to death on the Portage Bridge between Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec.

Advances in forensics and DNA have allowed police to identify the perpetrator and the matter is now before the court.

Ottawa Police investigators have worked on the cold case since 2020, in collaboration with the RCMP and Toronto Police Service. Using advanced DNA testing, including Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG), the suspect was identified as Lawrence Diehl and was arrested and charged thanks to significant assistance from the Vancouver Police Service.

Investigative genetic genealogy involves using genetic data from databases to trace potential family lineages as part of criminal investigations.

This is the first time Ottawa Police have used this technology.

“By bringing these charges, the Ottawa Police Service demonstrates once again that we will never stop working for victims of crime and their loved ones,” said Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs. “We will continue to embrace innovative techniques to solve cases, and I commend the members of our Homicide Unit for ensuring that no case is ever forgotten, and no effort is spared. We have spoken to the family of Mr. Smith to advise them of this development in the case. I also want to thank the Vancouver Police for their significant assistance in this investigation.”

2 Arrested After Fleeing Police – Names Released

(WEST NIPISSING, ON) – Two people have been arrested and charged after they fled from police.

On December 14, 2024, at approximately 9:20 a.m., the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a possible impaired driver, in a parked vehicle at a business on Front Street, West Nipissing.

When police attended the parking vehicle, the vehicle fled from police. The vehicle was later located in a ditch, abandoned. A search of the area located the two occupants from the vehicle, who were arrested.

A search of the abandoned vehicle, led to the seizure of a prohibited edged weapon and drugs suspected to be cocaine.

As a result of the investigation, the driver Natacha YOUNG, 39 years-of-age, from Central Frontenac, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – drugs
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was prohibited or restricted weapon
  • Possession of a schedule I substance
  • Fail to stop for police

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 45 days.

The passenger, Cory MITCHELL, 31 years-of-age, from Carleton Place, was charged with:

  • Fail to comply with Probation Order – four counts
  • Unauthorized possession of weapon
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was prohibited or restricted weapon
  • Possession of a schedule I substance

Both accused were released and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on January 2, 2025, in North Bay.
