OPP Traffic Notes In Review For The Week In North Simcoe

(MIDLAND, ON)– Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were kept busy with traffic investigations during the past week on roadways in North Simcoe. With students back in school, drivers had extra vehicular traffic to contend with including school buses and pedestrian traffic and community safety zones.

Officers focused their patrol time to school zone areas as well in the outlying areas such as Vasey Road, Old Fort Road, Simcoe County Roads 6, 27 and 93 which resulted in numerous instances of enforcement action being taken primarily for speeding offences which is one of the “Big Four” contributing factors of serious crashes along with seat belt usage, distracted driving and impaired driving.

On September 8, 2025 at 7:11 a.m. a 31 year old Elmvale male driver was stopped on Vasey Road, Tay Township and charged for stunt driving after being clocked at 123 km/hr in an 60 km/hr zone resulting in a vehicle impound / 30 day drivers licence suspension and a date in Provincial court. Side note, the driver also faces a charge under the Cannabis Control Act.

Twelve crashes were investigated on area roadways and officers responded to 25 traffic complaints initiated by the public and called into the OPP Communication Centre for such things as possible impaired drivers, speeders and in one incidence a report of a passenger sitting atop the roof of the car heading up Cedar Point Road in Tiny Township. 14 R.I.D.E. (reduce impaired driving everywhere) programs were setup throughout the Detachment area at all hours of the day/night checking over 200 drivers for signs of impairment in an effort to improve road safety.

IMPAIRED DRIVING INCIDENTS

1) Officers were dispatched at 11:55 p.m. September 10, 2025 to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in a restricted parking spot at a William Street, Midland housing complex. Officers found two occupants passed out in the vehicle and upon awaking and speaking with the driver, made an arrest and entered into an impaired by drug investigation. Further investigation at detachment with the assistance of an OPP Drug Recognition (DRE) officer has resulted in the following criminal charges for 35 year old Mitchell Alan ELLERY of Merrickville.

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court

And further with the Provincial Offence of

  • Fail to surrender accessible parking permit

The accused was held for a bail hearing and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date. The accused was also served a 90 day drivers licence suspension. The involved vehicle was towed and subject to a 7 day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

2) OPP officers were dispatched at 10:26 p.m. September 10, 2025 to a report of a possible impaired driver accompanied by a number of intoxicated individuals parked in a restricted parking spot at a Simcoe County 93 Midland fast food restaurant. Attending officers spoke with the driver and entered into a drinking and driving investigation resulting in 47 year old Rachel SECORD of Penetanguishene being charged criminally with the following offences.

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Theft Under $5000

The accused was released and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on October 23, 2025 and was also served a 90 day drivers licence suspension. The involved vehicle was towed and subject to a 7 day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

A secondary property related investigation at Detachment resulted in 32 year old Dylan CAMPBELL also of Penetanguishene being charged criminally with the offences of,

  • Theft Under $5000
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – in Canada
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused was released and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on October 23, 2025.

Do You Recognize These Home Invaders?

(PENETANGUISHENE,ON) – Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are asking for assistance in identifying suspects in a break/enter and theft incident from a Penetanguishene home.

Officers responded on August 28, 2025, to the report of a break and enter to a Edward Street home resulting in the theft of a quantity of Chinese currency that occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. August 28, 2025. (See attached photograph)

Rodriguez DE LUNA – Drunk Driving

(PENETANGUISHENE, ON)- A Penetanguishene resident became the subject of a drinking and driving investigation after an officer on patrol checked on a vehicle parked at the side of Dunlop Street, Penetanguishene at approximately 5:00 a.m. September 7,2025.

The officer spoke with the driver and made an arrest at the scene which led to transporting the driver to the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) for further investigation.

As a result, 35 year old Armando Rodriguez DE LUNA has been charged criminally with Operation while impaired – alcohol and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on September 25, 2025, and was also served a 90 day drivers licence suspension. The involved vehicle was towed and subject to a 7 day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Detachment officers also set up and conducted seven Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) spot check locations over the past weekend as a road safety initiative.

Tow Truck Operator Facing Drunk Driving Charge

(PENETANGUISHENE, ON)- An Etobicoke resident became the subject of a drinking and driving investigation after the OPP Communication Centre was in receipt of numerous complaints by community members of a passed out, possibly impaired driver in a parked tow truck on Broad Street, Penetanguishene on July 26, 2025.

Officers of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended the scene at approximately 6:13 a.m. and after parking their cruisers to prevent the driver from fleeing, they spoke with the driver after awaking him and entered into an impaired driving investigation which was continued at the Detachment.

Upon completion of the investigation, 27 year old Anderson Romero ULATE has been charged with the following criminal driving offences of –

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on August 14, 2025, and was also served a 90 day drivers licence suspension. The involved vehicle was towed and subject to a 7 day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Drug Bust – Willard MARION

(PENETANGUISHENE, ON) – As a result of an ongoing police investigation, an arrest has been made along with a seizure of drugs and Canadian currency after members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) executed a search warrant at a Penetanguishene residence at approximately 11:45 a.m. July 8,2025

Officers from the OPP Community Street Crime Units (CSCU) from the Southern Georgian Bay, Huronia West and Collingwood Detachments along with OPP Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Canine Unit (K-9) and detachment uniform members executed the search warrant at a Main Street, Penetanguishene apartment building resulting in the arrest of a Midland resident.

Officers arrested a total of six persons found inside and seized a quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine, an assortment of pills, Canadian currency and drug paraphernalia.

Upon the completion of the investigation four individuals were released unconditionally, one individual remained in custody on outstanding investigative warrants and 54 year old Willard MARION has been charged criminally with the following property and drug related offences.

  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – in Canada
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine

The accused was released from custody and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on August 7, 2025.

Lindsay VANVOLKENBURG Was Arrested

(PENETANGUSHENE, ON) A driver is facing charges and other sanctions following a traffic stop in Penetanguishene, early this morning.

On February 15, 2025 at about 2:30 a.m., a member of the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was performing patrol duties in the Town of Penetanguishene and stopped a car on Fox Street.

The officer spoke with the driver and detected the smell of alcohol which led the officer to demand a breath sample into a roadside screening device. The officer made attempts to convince the driver to provide a breath sample however, they refused.

As a result of this incident, Lindsay VANVOLKENBURG, 36 years of Penetanguishene, was arrested and faces the following charge contrary to the Criminal Code:

  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand

The accused was released to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on March 6, 2025. When charged with impaired driving the driver’s licence of the accused is immediately suspended for 90 days and the vehicle they were operating is impounded for 7 days.

Victim Blocks Hit & Run Drunk Driver Until Police Arrive #FightBack #StandYourGround

(PENETANGUISHENE, ON) –  A Penetanguishene resident faces a slew of driving/drug/alcohol related offences after an early New Years Day fail to remain collision investigation in Midland.

An officer from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) while on patrol, was waved down by a male at approximately 1:01 a.m. January 1, 2025, who appeared to have his grey Ford parked as to intentionally block a residential driveway on Hugel Avenue, Midland. Upon speaking with the male it was learned that a black Cadillac parked further into the driveway was involved in a nearby collision with the complainant and the vehicle had fled the scene and entered the driveway.

The officer located the suspect Cadillac and driver in the Hugel Avenue driveway and entered into an impaired driving investigation after conversation. A further investigation at the scene inside the vehicle led to the seizure of open liquor and also a quantity of a white powdery substance believed to be Methamphetamine.

As a result of these investigations, Anthony BROWN 25 years of Penetanguishene has been charged criminally with the following offences.

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

And Further with the following offence contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamine

And Further with the following Provincial Offences

  • Careless driving
  • Novice driver – B.A.C. above zero
  • Fail to remain
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on the January 16, 2025, and also served a 90 day drivers licence suspension. The involved vehicle was towed and the subject of a 7 day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

CARRIERE Was Arrested

(PENETANGUISHENE, ON) –  A Sergeant from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) while on patrol in Penetanguishene made a vehicle stop just after midnight of a vehicle travelling without any running lights activated.

The blue Toyota pick up observed travelling along Robert Street was safely stopped on Maria Street and the officer spoke to the driver and shortly entered into a drinking and driving investigation.

As a result of this investigation, Jessica CARRIERE 47 years of Penetanguishene has been charged criminally with the offence of Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) and was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on the January 2, 2025, and was also served a 90 day drivers licence suspension. The involved vehicle was towed and subject to a 7 day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Chad Mathieson – Impaired Operation

(PENETANGUISHENE, ON) On November 27th, 2024 at around 5:15 p.m., members of the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police(OPP) responded to a dispute at a residence on Lepage Drive in Penetanguishene. While attempting to resolve the matter, officers learned that one of the involved parties left the area in a vehicle and was believed to be impaired.

Officers located the driver at a residence on Champlain Road in Penetanguishene and noted signs of impairment. The individual was placed under arrest and transported to detachment for further tests.

As a result of this investigation, Chad Mathieson, 51 years of Penetanguishene, faces the following charge contrary to the Criminal Code:

  • Impaired Operation – Alcohol and Drugs

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on December 12, 2024. When charged with impaired driving, the driver’s license of the accused is suspended for 90 days and the vehicle they were operating is impounded for 7 days.

Two Arrested – Names Released

(PENETANGUISHENE, ON) – A report at approximately 11:57 p.m. July 4, 2024 to the OPP Communications Centre of suspicious persons in the area of the Penetanguishene Town dock and boat launch followed by calls of persons attempting to break into vehicles in the same area resulted in officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment to respond and upon attending, two suspects fled the area on foot and bicycle.

A number of officers patrolled the area locating the suspects wearing balaclavas and made arrests on Shanahan Lane and another on Beck Boulevard. During the officers investigation prior to the arrests, located an aerosol can containing a noxious substance and during the arrests a replica pistol was seized.

Charged in connection to this investigation are the following persons.

Ethan VIDLER 18 years of Penetanguishene has been charged criminally with the following offences.

  • Disguise with Intent
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Escape lawful custody

And further with

  • Being intoxicated in public place contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on August 15, 2024.

A 14 year old young person of Strong Township has been also charged with the following criminal offences.

  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Disguise with Intent
  • Escape lawful custody
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Failure to comply with undertaking

The accused who cannot be identified because of the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act was held for a bail hearing and will be appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice  at a future date.

Cocaine Bust – Names Released

(PENETANGUISHENE,ON) – A traffic stop by police of a pick up truck in Penetanguishene overnight has resulted in the seizure of several chunks of cocaine destined for area distribution.

Two members of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) attached to the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment conducted a vehicle stop of a Dodge Ram pick up with four occupants on Main Street at approximately 9:10 p.m. June 27, 2024 resulting in the officers entering into a Liquor Licence and Control Act investigation. During the course of this investigation, several large chunks of a substance appearing to be that of suspected cocaine along with drug related paraphernalia were located and seized along with open liquor found within the pick up. The street value of the seized cocaine is believed to be in excess of $7000.

As a result of this investigation the following area residents 1-4 have been charged with the following offences.

1 / Penetanguishene resident Thomas STOLL 22 years of age has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act
  • Having liquor in open container in unauthorized place contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act

2 / Hillsdale resident Dylan CASTON 20 years of age has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act
  • Driving while under suspension – contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor – contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available – contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act

3 / Tiny Township resident Abigail GAILBRAITH 20 years of age has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine

4 / Midland resident Darren ELLERY 31 years of age has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act
  • Obstruct Peace Officer – contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Consuming liquor in unauthorized place – contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act

The accused persons #’s 1-3 were released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on August 8, 2024. Accused person # 4 was held in custody to appear before a bail hearing and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date.

James ALDRIDGE – Drunk Driving

(PENETANGUISHENE,ON) – The driving abilities of a 28-yr-old Penetanguishene resident operating a grey Kia north bound on Main Street, Penetanguishene caught the watchful eye of an officer from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment around 11:55 p.m. March 23, 2024. The officer observed the vehicle go east on Robert Street East and north on Fox Street was able to safely stop the vehicle at Burke Street after observing several driving infractions.

After speaking with the lone driver, the officer entered into a drinking and driving investigation resulting in James ALDRIDGE being charged criminally in relation to this investigation with the offences of Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 11, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Detachment officers conducted six Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) programs over the weekend checking 45 drivers for signs of impairment in their commitment to increasing road safety on area roadways.

Hero Citizen Defends Community And Arrests Criminal – Police Eventually Show Up #TakeBackYourCommunity #StandYourGround

(PENETANGUISHENE, ON) – A report of an individual attempting to enter a parked vehicle to the OPP Communication Centre at approximately 12:12 a.m. March 2, 2024, by a Fox Street, Penetanguishene resident caused members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment to patrol the area for a suspect. Shortly afterwards, a Peel Street resident flagged down the officers as they had encountered and apprehended an individual on their property who was attempting to enter vehicles.

Officers arrested at the scene a person known to them as Tyler SYLVESTER 30-years-old of Christian Island and after investigation the following criminal charges were laid.

  • Trespassing at Night (two counts)
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – in Canada (two counts)
  • Theft Under $5,000 from a Motor Vehicle

and further was arrested on an outstanding warrant for an Anishinabek Police Service Investigation.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and remains in custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date.
