Cruelty To Animals – Leonard (Len) MENARD

(NORTH SHORE TOWNSHIP, ON) – On September 9, 2025, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a person for multiple animal cruelty related offences.

In March, 2025, the OPP and Provincial Animal Welfare Services began the investigation after attending a property on Old Hydro Road in the Township of the North Shore. On the property was a structure housing 10 goats – nine were deceased and only one was alive. Veterinary consultation was also involved, which determined that the animals were not adequately cared for (providing food, water, shelter) over a long period of time. 

After a lengthily investigation, police arrested and charged the owner.   

Leonard (Len) MENARD, 61-years-old, from North Shore Township, was charged with:

  • Cruelty to Animals – Unnecessary pain, suffering or injury – three counts
  • Cause damage or injury to animal or bird – fail to provide suitable/adequate food, water, care, shelter

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on September 9, 2025.

Robert BROLEY – Impaired Driving

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON)- Driver impaired by drug.

On Friday, June 20, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint involving a red pickup truck that had gone into a ditch along Highway 17 near Handy Spot Road in the village of Spragge. The driver was observed walking away from the vehicle, displaying obvious signs of intoxication.

Police arrived a short time later and located the driver back at the pickup truck. Following an investigation, officers determined the driver was impaired by an intoxicating substance. The individual was arrested and transported to the Blind River Detachment for further testing.

Robert BROLEY, 59 years-old from the Township of the North Shore was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – drug
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code (four counts)
  • Driving while under suspension (three counts)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on August 7, 2025. The involved vehicle was impounded for 45 days.

Matthieu LALANDE Charged

(NORTH SHORE TOWNSHIP, ON) – The East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged a driver after receiving notification from the Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR).  

On April 27, 2025, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the OPP stopped the burgundy car on Highway 108, North Shore Township. After investigation, police learned there was no insurance on the car and the wrong plates were being used.   

Matthieu LALANDE, 38-years-old, from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Cause motor vehicle to operate without insurance
  • Permit use of plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Drive motor vehicle, fail to display two plates

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on May 20, 2025.

Jackie MCCOLL Arrested For Threats

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON)- On-going neighbour dispute results in an arrest.

On Saturday April 12, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a reported neighbour dispute on Wagoosh Lake Road in the Township of the North Shore (Spragge).

The investigation determined that an individual approached the complainant’s property line, began yelling at the complainant without provocation, and made a threat to burn down the complainant’s garage.

As a result, Jackie MCCOLL, 48 years-of-age from Spragge was charged with: Uttering threats-damage property.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on June 5, 2025.

Randall SMITH Was Arrested – Details Released

(NORTH SHORE TOWNSHIP, ON) – The East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a driver in after numerous traffic complaints.  

On January 20, 2025, at approximately 5:15 p.m., the OPP were notified of the burgundy car with a black roof now travelling northbound on Highway 108 at a high rate of speed, passing unsafely, and driving erratically. Police intercepted the car and conducted a traffic stop near Mountain Road in Elliot Lake. While speaking to the driver, police also detected a strong odour of cannabis. As a result, approximately 30 grams of suspected cannabis and approximately 1100 unmarked cigarettes were seized.   

Randall SMITH, 37-years-old, from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Careless Driving
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • Possess unmarked cigarettes

Thomas STE-CROIX Was Arrested Again

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON)- Driver caught speeding at more than 160 kms/hr.

On December 31, 2024, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) unit was on traffic patrol on Highway 17, east of Blind River. At approximately 10:30 p.m., police observed a vehicle speeding at an excessive high rate of speed as it approached the town of Algoma Mills. A traffic stop was initiated on Highway 17, between Lauzon Village Road and Highway 538, within the Township of the North Shore.

A query revealed that the driver had multiple outstanding warrants and was unlicensed. Assisting with the traffic stop were officers from the East Algoma OPP Detachment and the Mississauga First Nation Police Service. The driver was arrested and transported to the Blind River detachment for processing. The car was impounded for 45 days.

As a result, Thomas STE-CROIX, 39 years-old from Cold Lake, Alberta, was charged with:

  • Operation while prohibited under Criminal Code
  • Failure to comply with release order-other than to attend court (two counts)
  • Drive motor vehicle-perform stunt-excessive speed
  • Driving while under suspension

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on January 1, 2025, and was remanded into custody.

Gunnar SALES – Was Arrested

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON) – Patron kicks in window at local tavern.

On November 3, 2024, at approximately 1:50 a.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance at a local tavern in the Town of Thessalon.  

Investigation determined an individual had been kicked out of the tavern and was banging on the door. While police were making their way to the establishment the person had broken the glass on the door and was attempting to re-enter the premises and left.

At approximately 2:10 a.m., police located and arrested the intoxicated person on Main Street. The accused was transported to Thessalon detachment and was lodged until sober. While lodged, the accused urinated on the cell floor and wiped nose mucus on the walls.

As a result, Gunnar SALES, 25 years-of-age from Otterville was charged with:

  • Mischief-destroys or damages property – two counts
  • Being intoxicated in public place

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on December 5, 2024.

Thomas KUZMA – Drunk Driving

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON) – East Algoma OPP lays 47th impaired charge in 2024.

On November 3, 2024, at approximately 12:00 a.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver travelling eastbound on Causley Street through the Town Blind River. 

Police patrolled Highway 17 and located the suspect vehicle parked on Martin Road in the village of Spragge. While speaking to the driver police determined alcohol had been consumed and an arrest was made. The driver was then transported to Blind River detachment for further testing.

As a result, Thomas KUZMA, 19 years-of-age from Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Have care and control of vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on December 5, 2024.

The car was towed and impounded for seven days with the driver being issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension.

Drunk Dialing 911 Ends With Arrest

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON) – Intoxicated 911 caller arrested.

On October 11, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a third false 911 call at a residence on Highway 17 in the village of Spragge.

Investigation determined the caller was intoxicated for all three 911 calls and was apparently bored. The caller was warned each time not to call 911 for non emergent matters. The first false 911 call came in at approximately 3:30 a.m. and the second false 911 call was at approximately 8:30 p.m. The accused was spoken to again and warned.  

As a result of a third false 911 call, Jackie MCCOLL, 48 years-of-age from Spragge was charged with – Harassing Communications, and was lodged at Blind River detachment until sober.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on December 5, 2024.

Adrian ST DENIS – Impaired Driving

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON)- Driver arrested and charged after narrowly causing a head on collision.

On October 1, 2024, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint involving an eastbound dark blue pick-up truck travelling at an excessive high rate of speed, swerving all over the road and narrowly causing a head on collision on Highway 17 near Pronto Road within the Township of the North Shore. 

At approximately 13:10 p.m., police initiated a traffic stop on Highway 17 near Woodlawn Drive in the Town of Blind River.  While speaking to the driver police determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance, and a subsequent arrest was made. Also, in the driver’s possession was approximately 7 grams of suspected fentanyl and drug paraphernalia located in a vest pocket. The driver was later assessed by Mississauga First Nation Police Service’s Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) at Blind River detachment.

As a result, Adrian ST DENIS, 58 years-of-age from Serpent River First Nation was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – drug
  • Possession of a schedule I substance-opioid (other than heroin)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on November 7, 2024.

The pick-up truck was towed and impounded for seven days with the driver being issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension.

Michael SCHELL Was Arrested

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON)- Thief hit in the head with small propane cylinder.

On August 29, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a break and enter at a rail scrap yard on Highway 17 in the village of Spragge.  

The suspect had loaded scrap metal in a trailer from the rail yard and a struggle ensued between the complainant and the suspect. While waiting for police the complainant then tried to box in the suspect vehicle and was unsuccessful as the suspect vehicle drove through a fence and fled the scene eastbound on Highway 17.

Later that evening, police received another call for service reporting that the suspect from earlier was hit in the head with a small green propane cylinder during a physical altercation in Spragge and was now parked at a parking lot at the west end of the Town of Spanish. Upon police arrival the accused was arrested at 10:00 p.m., and the galvanized trailer was located on Waterfalls Road and towed to Blind River.

As a result, Michael SCHELL, 38 years-of-age from Elliot Lake was charged with: 

  • Theft over $5000
  • Mischief -destroys or damages property
  • Dangerous operation
  • Driving while under suspension

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on October 3, 2024.

$20,000 Copper Deer Stolen

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON)- Police arrest person for three stolen copper deer statues and sold for scrap metal.

On April 22, 2024, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft of three copper deer statues from a Tourist Information Centre at the junction of Highways 17 and 108 in the Township of the North Shore. 

The complainant advised there was a deer display of a doe and her fawn and some of the deer were cut from the display. The City of Elliot Lake estimate each deer to be valued at approximately $20,000.

On July 3, 2024, a recycling business in Sudbury contacted OPP to advise that a person bought in copper to be recycled, which were later identified as the three deer statues. The business learned that the deer statues may have been stolen, but unfortunately, they had already been scrapped.

On August 14, 2024, police arrested Travis BUDGE, 35 years-of-age from Spanish, and was charged with – Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000.

The accused is scheduled to appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on October 10, 2024.

Laurel LENDLE – Drunk Driving

(NORTH SHORE TOWNSHIP, ON) – A person was charged after police stopped a vehicle on Highway 17, North Shore Township.

On August 8, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on general patrol when the eastbound vehicle was stopped. The vehicle was having difficulty maintaining it’s lane and had varying speeds. The driver was spoken to who exhibited obvious signs of impairment by alcohol and emanated a strong odour of alcoholic beverage. The driver was confused and could not provide necessary vehicle documentation or licence. An open bottle of partially drank whisky was also located in the vehicle. The driver was subsequently arrested and the vehicle was towed and impounded.  

Laurel LENDLE, 37-years-old, from Wisconsin was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on September 5, 2024.
