Michael McEachern – Impaired Driving

(NIPIGON, ON) – A traffic complaint on Highway 17 near Nipigon has resulted in one driver from Burlington charged with Impaired Driving.

On August 1, 2024, at approximately 10:20 p.m., members of the Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment received a call for service about a possible impaired driver on Highway 17 near Nipigon. Nipigon OPP members patrolled and subsequently located the vehicle shortly thereafter.

Officers spoke to the driver and determined that the driver was impaired by drug. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Nipigon Hospital Detachment for further testing. It was also determined that the driver had been previously bound by an undertaking and was in breach of his conditions.

Michael McEachern, 27-years-old, of Burlington is now charged with Impaired Operation and Failure to Comply with Release Order – Other than to Attend Court.

The accused was released from custody and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon at a later date.

Drug Bust: Names Released

(NIPIGON, ON) – Two Nipigon residents are facing drug trafficking charges following a search warrant execution in Nipigon.

On June 25, 2024, just after 1:00 p.m., members of the Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit, with the assistance of the Nipigon OPP Detachment, executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant at a residence on Harkness Street.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of suspected cocaine, crack cocaine, and psilocybin. Canadian currency and other items associated with drug trafficking were also seized.

As a result, Samantha HARDY, 31-years-old, and Mitchell ALCOCK, 31-years-old, both of Nipigon, have been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code and CDSA with:

·      Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine

·      Possession of a Schedule III Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking

·      Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

ALCOCK has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon on August 20, 2024. HARDY is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon on June 28, 2024.

Ryan Koski Was Arrested

(NIPIGON, ON) – A traffic complaint on Highway 11 near Lake Helen has resulted in one driver from Thunder Bay charged with Impaired Driving offences.

On May 5, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., members of the Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment received a call for service about a possible impaired driver on Highway 11 near Lake Helen. Nipigon OPP members patrolled, and with the assistance of the Anishinabek Police Service (APS) Rocky Bay Detachment, the vehicle was located travelling north on Highway 11.

Officers spoke to the driver and determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Nipigon OPP Detachment for further testing.

Ryan Koski, 45-years-old, of Thunder Bay is now charged with Impaired Operation and Impaired Operation (Blood alcohol concentration 80 plus).

The accused is now facing a 90-Day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 7-Day vehicle impoundment. The accused was released from custody and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on a later date.

William CODDINGTON – Impaired Driving

(NIPIGON, ON) – On April 23, 2024, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Nipigon Detachment conducted a proactive traffic stop resulting in one person being arrested and criminally charged with impaired operation and driving while under suspension.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., members of the Nipigon OPP Detachment were on general patrol in the Town of Nipigon in the area of Greenmantle Drive. A traffic stop was conducted. The driver was found to be a suspended driver and additionally performed a roadside Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) to which the driver failed. The driver was transported to the Greenstone OPP Detachment for further testing by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).  

As a result of the investigation, William CODDINGTON, 55-years-old of Dorion has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act with:

·        Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·        Driving While Under Suspension

The accused received a 90-Day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 7 Day Vehicle Impoundment.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon on May 14, 2024, to answer to the above charges.

Michael METANSININE – Drunk Driving

(NIPIGON) – A traffic complaint has led to one individual being arrested and charged with impaired operation.  

On March 10, 2024, just before 7:00 p.m., members of the Nipigon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of an erratic and suspected impaired driver on Highway 11/17 near Hurkett Loop Road. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Nipigon OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result, Michael METANSININE, 53-years-old, of Geraldton, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

·        Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·        Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon on April 23, 2024.

Spike Belt Stops Jimmy NADON In Stolen Vehicle

(NIPIGON, ON) – An individual is facing multiple charges after members of the Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment received a report of a stolen motor vehicle early Friday morning.

On February 23, 2024, at approximately 2:00 a.m., members of the Thunder Bay OPP Detachment received a report of a stolen vehicle from a business on Arthur Street in the City of Thunder Bay. It was reported that the vehicle was observed travelling eastbound on Highway 11-17 at a high rate of speed.

Nipigon OPP members observed the vehicle around Highway 628 and Highway 11-17. Officers attempted a traffic stop, to which the vehicle did not stop for officers. A Tire Deflation Device (TDD), otherwise known as a Spike belt was successfully utilized causing the vehicle to safely come to a stop. The driver exited, initiating a ground search by officers. The OPP K9 Unit and OPP Emergency Response Team assisted with the search. The driver was subsequently located and placed under arrest.

As a result of the investigation, Jimmy NADON, 19-years-old of Geraldton has been charged with: 

·      Dangerous Operation

·      Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs

·      Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)

·      Flight From Peace Officer

·      Theft of Motor Vehicle

·      Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence

The accused was brought back to the Nipigon OPP Detachment for further testing. No injuries were sustained throughout the entirety of the investigation.

The accused is now facing a 90-Day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS). The vehicle was returned to its owner. The accused was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody.
