Murder Update: Justus CHESTER Arrested & Victim Identified

(MIDLAND, ON) – Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged an individual in connection to a homicide investigation in the Town of Midland.

On July 15, 2024, the OPP attended a residence on Seventh Street just before 1:00 p.m. and located a deceased individual. A second individual was located in the residence and transported to a hospital for medical attention. That individual has since been arrested and charged.

The deceased has been identified as Julia BRADY, age 23 from Midland.

As a result of the investigation, Justus CHESTER, age 26 from Midland, has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder, contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on July 22, 2024.

The Southern Georgian Bay Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Another Homicide

(MIDLAND, ON) – Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are conducting a homicide investigation in the Town of Midland.

On July 15, 2024, shortly before 1:00 p.m., the Southern Georgian Bay OPP, Simcoe County Paramedic Services and Midland Fire Services responded to a call for service at a residence on Seventh Street. Upon arrival, officers located one person deceased. A second individual in the residence was taken to a local hospital and transferred to a Toronto-area trauma centre for serious injuries.

A postmortem examination has been scheduled at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto.

While police believe this to be an isolated incident, residents are reminded to be aware of their surroundings and remain vigilant of their personal safety at all times.

The Southern Georgian Bay Crime Unit is conducting the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Deborah Janice MACLEOD – Drunk Driving

(MIDLAND,ON) –  A call from the owner of a parked car on King Street, Midland to the OPP Communication Centre reporting a possible impaired driver had struck their vehicle has resulted in criminal code driving charges for a London, Ontario resident.

Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment were dispatched at approximately 5:15 p.m. July 4, 2024 to the address and in the course of the investigation Deborah Janice MACLEOD age 64 years was arrested and charged with the following offences.

  • Dangerous operation
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 18, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Tyler COPEGOG Arrested Again

(MIDLAND,ON) – Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment responded to a trespass complaint from the Walmart store in Midland on July 4, 2024 at 6:53 p.m. after store security observed a person inside the store who has been trespassed from the business.

Attending officers located the suspect who is known to police at a nearby fast food restaurant.

Arrested and charged with the following offences is Tyler COPEGOG 21 years of no fixed address, Midland.

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

And further with

  • Enter premises when entry prohibited contrary to the Trespass to Property Act
  • Engage in prohibited activity on premises contrary to the Trespass to Property Act

The accused was held for a bail hearing and will be appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice  at a future date.

SIU Invokes Mandate Into Tiny Township Fatal Crash

(MIDLAND,ON) – The Province of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate into a fatal single vehicle crash in Springwater Township.

At approximately 2:40 p.m. July 3, 2024 officers from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were on scene of a single vehicle crash on Crossland Road between Flos Road 11 and the Tiny/Flos Townline Road. The vehicle had two occupants at the time of the crash, one of which was pronounced deceased the scene and the other was transported to an area hospital by County of Simcoe Paramedic Services.

The roadway has reopened as of 10:30p.m. July 3, 2024 after the scene was investigated by members of the SIU.

More Impaired Drivers

(MIDLAND,ON) – Several calls from the public to the OPP Communication Centre reporting possible impaired drivers resulted in two drivers being removed after investigation from area roadways over the Canada Day long weekend.

At approximately 4:19 a.m. July 1, 2024 officers were dispatched to a report from an off-duty police officer with a white Nissan Versa vehicle that was stopped in a live lane at the intersection of Highway 93 and Vasey Road in the Township of Tay.

Attending officers found the driver passed out at the wheel and upon awaking and speaking with the driver, the officers entered into an impaired driving investigation resulting in an arrest and further investigation at detachment.

Charged criminally with Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) is Tyler KOPKA 23 years of Mississauga.

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 18, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Another call from the public at approximately 3:24 a.m. June 29, 2024 of a black GMC vehicle being operated in an erratic fashion eastbound on Highway 12 near Park Street, Tay Township resulted in several officers patrolling the area with a similar vehicle being observed entering a business parking lot off Pine Street, Waubaushene.

Officers observed an occupant of the vehicle flee from the vehicle who was located by the officers nearby in an wooded area and became the subject of an impaired driving investigation.

Charged criminally in this investigation with Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) is Brendan MARCHILDON 32 years of Penetanguishene.

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 11, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Brieana River CRANE Was Arrested

(MIDLAND,ON) – Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment responded at 4:06 p.m. April 29, 2024, to a report of shoplifting at the Jones Road Midland LCBO store resulting in the loss of a quantity of liquor. Video surveillance was obtained and reviewed by the attending officer.

On May 6, 2024 at 3:27 p.m. store staff of the LCBO Jones Road, Midland location contacted police to report another theft and were also able to provide video surveillance of the suspect and through investigation, the suspect person was identified.

On May 7, 2024 officers responded at approximately 2:00 p.m. to an assault complaint at a Rue Richelieu, Penetanguishene residence. Upon identifying the accused in the assault investigation, it was learned that the accused was also responsible for the previously investigated thefts from the LCBO.

Charged in connection to these three incidents is Brieana River CRANE 26 years of Penetanguishene with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

  • Theft Under $5000- SHOPLIFTING (two counts)
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – in Canada
  • Assault

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  at a future date in June, 2024.

E-Biker Arrested – Details Released

(MIDLAND, ON)- A Midland resident learned as a result of a single vehicle E-Bike crash that drinking and driving laws do apply to E-Bike operators as well. Griffin Wright-Gravel 19 years was charged with Operation while impaired – alcohol and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) after officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment were dispatched at approximately 9:07 pm April 18, 2024 to an incident in a parking lot off Len Self Boulevard, Midland.

Neither the operator or the female passenger required hospital treatment as a result of the crash and the accused was released from custody at the completion of the police investigation to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on May 2, 2024. The accused was also was subjected to a tow and impound invoice for seven days for the involved E-Bike and a 90 day drivers licence suspension as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Drug Bust – Names Released

(MIDLAND,ON) A vehicle with a broken rear window attracted the attention of police this morning and led officers to locate drugs during a traffic stop.

On the morning of April 17, 2024, members of the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police(OPP) were on general patrol in the Town of Midland and observed a vehicle with a smashed rear windshield parked in a private parking lot. Officers stopped the small SUV as it exited onto Montreal Street in Midland and upon speaking with the occupants, officers gathered grounds to believe that they were smoking cannabis inside the car. A search of the vehicle was conducted and during the search officers located drugs which are prohibited under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act.

As a result of this investigation, the following persons are facing their respective charges:

Francis JENNS, 58 years of Midland and Marci LASALLE, 43 years of Orillia face the following charges contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;

  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Cocaine
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Methamphetamine
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Opioid
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Other Drugs

They were released to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on May 30, 2024.

Amanda Black, 36 years of Barrie faces the above charges as well as the following charges contrary to the Criminal Code;

  • Possession of a Credit Card
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused were held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 17, 2024.

Tyler COPEGOG Arrested Again

(MIDLAND,ON) – Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment responded at 6:33 pm April 8, 2024, to a report of an individual on foot playing “chicken” with vehicular traffic in the intersection of King Street and Heritage Drive, Midland.

Attending officers located an intoxicated individual and made an arrest under the Liquor Licence and Control Act who was then transported and lodged in the Detachment cells to sober up.

Shortly after 11:00 am April 9, 2024, the well rested individual was released from the cells and promptly attended the Detachment public entrance and unlawfully removed items from a road safety partners fund display containing food stuffs.

The Tyler COPEGOG 21-years of no fixed address Midland was located and arrested at a nearby business and charged criminally with Theft Under $5000 and further with Fail to Comply with Probation Order.

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on May 23, 2024.

Bird Arrested After Parking Lot Nap

(MIDLAND,ON) – A member of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment while on patrol noted a vehicle parked in a no parking section of a business parking lot on County Road 93, Midland at approximately 1:07 pm April 5, 2024.

There appeared to be a person asleep behind the steering wheel and upon further investigation by the officer, the lone occupant was arrested for impaired driving and an investigation at Detachment was conducted to confirm the officers observations.

As a result, Mitchell BIRD 25-years-of Midland has been charged criminally with Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 18, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Detachment patrol officers set up eight Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) programs checking 180 drivers for signs of impairment over the April 5-8, 2024 time frame in an effort to increase road safety here in North Simcoe.

Justin JACKSON Arrested For Fraud & Possession

(MIDLAND, ON) – A 35 year old Midland resident has been charged in connection to a unlawful vehicle entry, theft and further fraud incidents after a Penetanguishene resident reported the theft of a wallet from an unlocked parked vehicle at a residence during the dark hours of March 9-10, 2024.

The responding officer through investigation found that the credit cards from the stolen wallet were used at several area businesses and a suspect was later identified as a person known to police.

On the afternoon of March 25, 2024, officers responded to a report of an intoxicated person and upon investigation by police, the person was arrested as the suspect in connection to the theft and fraud incident.

Charged is Justin JACKSON with the following offences.

  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – in Canada
  • Fraud Under $5000 (three counts)

The accused was held for a bail hearing on outstanding warrants and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date.

Residents are reminded to lock your vehicle and remove valuables such as wallets and purses containing identification or credit cards and cash when you park it to help avoid becoming a victim of numerous types of crime.

Trinity LYONS Was Arrested For Drunk Driving

(MIDLAND,ON) – A R.I.D.E. program set up by members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment on Heritage Drive, Midland has resulted in a impaired driving investigation for a 23 year old Christian Island resident.

Officers doing their part in an effort to increase road safety were checking drivers for signs of impairment, entered into an impaired driving investigation with the operator of a red Mitsubishi vehicle at approximately 12:24 a.m. March 26, 2024.

As a result of the officers investigation, Trinity LYONS has been charged criminally with the offences of Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 11, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines..

Midland OPP Weekend Update

(MIDLAND,ON) – Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment were kept busy over March 14-17, 2024 with traffic related incidents on Detachment patrolled roadways.

Impaired Drivers Investigated

Officers conducting a reduce impaired driving everywhere (R.I.D.E.) program on Heritage Drive at Wye Valley Road, Midland checked the driver of a passing through vehicle for signs of impairment near 11:50 p.m. March 15, 2024 and entered into a drinking and driving investigation. As a result, Wayne BALKWILL 60-years of Toronto has been charged criminally with Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

A report of a vehicle being operated erratically in the Heritage Drive and King Street, Midland area caused officers to attend the area at approximately 11:17 p.m. March 14, 2024 who quickly located the suspect vehicle in a nearby parking lot. The driver was spoken to and arrested and investigated for drinking and driving offences.

Officers have charged Doreen STEVENSON 63- years of Oshawa criminally in relation to this investigation with the offences of Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) and Dangerous operation.

Both accused persons were released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 28, 2024, served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicles were towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Serious Vehicle Crash Investigations

Investigators were dispatched at approximately 11:41 a.m. March 17, 2024 to a vehicle crash and roll-over in the ditch of Highway 12, Tay Township. As a result of the crash investigation the 21-year old (uninjured) male driver of Midland has been charged with the following offences – Class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by qualified driver, Careless driving, Use plate not authorized for vehicle, Class G1 licence holder – carry front-seat passenger, Operate unsafe vehicle all contrary to the Highway Traffic Act and further with Operate a motor vehicle without insurance contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

Officers were also dispatched at approximately 6:53 p.m. March 13, 2024 to a single vehicle fatality on Simcoe County Road 27 in Tiny Township that was previously reported on March 14, 2024, which sadly claimed the life of a 31-year-old Tay Township male. The cause of that crash is still under investigation and investigators ask that anyone who may have witnessed the actions of the involved vehicle, a white Mini Cooper while east bound on Simcoe County Road 27 prior to the crash or of the crash itself or has dashcam video to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or [email protected].

75 Year Old Arrested For Drunk Driving

(MIDLAND, ON)- A report to the OPP Communications Centre on March 11, 2024 at approximately 2:23 p.m. lead officers to locate a Ford pick-up in the ditch of Old Fort Road near Elliott Side Road, Tay Township. The attending officer from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment spoke with the lone driver then placed the driver under arrest for an impaired driving investigation.

Upon completing the property damage only crash investigation and an investigation into the level of the drivers impairment, Jerry PILON, 75-years of Midland has been charged criminally with the following offences.

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Dangerous operation

And Further with

  • Driving motor vehicle with unsealed container of liquor
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

Contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act

The accused was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and released to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on March 28, 2024 along with the involved vehicle being towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Officers conducted 13 separate Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) programs throughout the Detachment patrol area checking 325 drivers for signs of impairment over the March 11-12, 2024 time period.
