2 Arrested After Hit & Run Involving Pedestrian – Names Released

(MIDLAND, ON) – The Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has arrested and charged two individuals in relation to a fail-to-remain motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the Town of Midland.

On August 12, 2024, at approximately 3:40 a.m., officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP and emergency services responded to a report of a collision on Wellington Street involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. The involved vehicle was no longer on scene upon police arrival, and the pedestrian was transported to a Toronto-area hospital with serious injuries.

As a result of the investigation, on August 13, 2024, the following individuals were arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

Patrick MCGUIRE, 39 years old of Midland:

·        Attempt to commit murder, section 239(1)(b) – two counts

·        Dangerous operation causing bodily harm, section 320.13(2)

·        Fail to stop at accident resulting in bodily harm, section 320.16(2)

Georgia QUANBURY, 25 years old of Midland:

·        Accessory after the fact to commit indictable offence, section 463(a) – two counts

Both accused were held for a bail hearing and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on August 14, 2024.

The identity of the victim will be withheld, and no further details will be released at this time.

The Southern Georgian Bay OPP Major Crime Unit is conducting the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the OPP Central Region Support Team (RST), the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team, and OPP Forensic Identification Services.

Peter LEGALLIS – Impaired Driving

(MIDLAND,ON) – The driving actions of a south bound Ford F-150 with Ontario plate PJLEG on Main Street Penetanguishene at the Poyntz Street traffic lights near 5:20 p.m. August 8, 2024, caught the eye of a patrol officer from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment. leading into a stunt driving investigation.

The officer stopped the vehicle nearby and spoke with the driver of the vehicle and caused the officer to further enter into an impaired driving investigation.

As a result of these investigations, Peter LEGALLIS 45 years of Penetanguishene has been charged criminally with the following.

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

and further with

  • Drive motor vehicle – Perform Stunt contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on August 22, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Garikayi Emmanuel MAHENDE – Drunk Driving

(MIDLAND,ON) – An early morning south bound Highway 400 vehicle made an unscheduled stop after a passenger of the vehicle got into a dispute with the driver and called police.

Officers from Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched at 1:30 a.m. August 11, 2024 and located the vehicle in a gas station parking lot off Quarry Road In Tay Township. The driver was spoken to by officers who then entered into a drinking and driving investigation resulting in Garikayi Emmanuel MAHENDE 42 years of Sudbury being charged criminally with

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on August 15, 2024 was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Jason MCCORMACK – Drunk Driving

(MIDLAND,ON)- Two officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment while on patrol were nearly struck in the intersection of Highway 12 and Vasey Road Severn Township by an approaching vehicle at approximately 11:56 p.m. August 8, 2024.

The officers stopped the Subaru sedan with Ontario plate DOBETT3R and upon speaking with the driver, entered into a drinking and driving investigation.

As a result Jason MCCORMACK 47 years of Orillia has been charged criminally with the following offences.

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on August 22, 2024 was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

John Phillip CHILLCOTT – Drunk Driving

(MIDLAND,ON) – Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment set up a R.I.D.E. program in the interest of road safety on Highway 12 near Wye Valley Road, Midland at approximately 12:30 a.m. August 3, 2024.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., a pick up truck entered the R.I.D.E. and an officer entered into a drinking and driving investigation after speaking with the driver.

As a result of this investigation, John Phillip CHILLCOTT 52 years of Gloucester has been charged criminally with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on August 15, 2024 was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Benjamin TALBOT Facing Numerous Charges

(MIDLAND,ON) – A traffic stop in the parking lot of a Midland restaurant has lead to a slew of driving and drug related charges for a Tay Township resident after investigation.

An officer on patrol near 11:03 p.m. July 31, 2024, conducted a traffic stop of a orange and black Kawasaki motorcycle at a King Street, Midland restaurant parking lot. After speaking with the operator, the officer entered into an impaired driving investigation leading to an arrest on an outstanding court process and a search of the person and motorcycle by the officer. A quantity of a white drug like substance was seized and other drug related paraphernalia at the scene.

A further investigation by a drug recognition officer was completed at detachment and as a result of this investigation, the following charges have been issued to Benjamin TALBOT, 34 years of Tay Township.

  • Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code
  • Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code
  • Operation while impaired – blood drug concentration
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

2 Arrested Following ALPR Hit

(MIDLAND,ON) – A traffic stop as a result of a hit on an in car Automated License Plate Recognition scanner in the Town of Midland has led to the arrest of two vehicle drivers after an investigation on July 30, 2024 by members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment.

At approximately 9:22 a.m. officers stopped a red Dodge Charger on Woodland Drive and spoke with the driver and shortly afterwards, entered into a criminal code drivers licence suspension investigation.

During the investigation the driver was arrested and arrangements were made to tow the vehicle to a secure vehicle impound yard. While awaiting the tow truck to arrive, another vehicle attended the scene and the driver interacted with officers resulting in a disturbance at the scene and the second driver was also arrested.

Both arrested persons were transported to Detachment for further investigation, resulting in the following.

The driver, Danielle Louise CAMERON 33 years of Midland has been charged with

  • Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Have care or control of vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Possess more than one licence (six counts) contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Fail to notify change of address contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The second vehicle driver April CAMERON 53 years of Midland has been charged with

  • Obstruct Peace Officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Have care or control of vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Fail to surrender insurance card contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act
  • Driver fail to surrender licence contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Interfere with traffic contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Driver – fail to properly wear seat belt contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Drive – hand held communication device contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Fail to identify self contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

Both accused persons were released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date. The red Dodge Charger was towed and impounded for 45 days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Colin FRANDSEN Was Arrested

(MIDLAND, ON) – As a result of an ongoing police investigation, members of the OPP Community Street Crime Unit from Southern Georgian Bay, Huronia West and Collingwood Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police executed a search warrant at a Queen Street, Midland residence at approximately 5:30 a.m. July 26, 2024.

Officers seized a quantity of a drug like substance believed to be cocaine along with Canadian currency, a replica air pistol and drug paraphernalia. See attached photograph.

Investigators have arrested and charged Colin FRANDSEN, 27 years of Midland with the following criminal charges.

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – in Canada

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on September 5, 2024..

2 More Impaired Drivers Arrested

(MIDLAND,ON) – Two driving incidents in the Midland and Tiny Township area’s over the past weekend have resulted in two area residents being charged with criminal driving offences.

A 911 call at approximately 5:42 p.m. July 21, 2024, to the OPP Communication Centre resulted in officers attending a Perkinsfield residence, while there the officers received a report of an vehicle being operated in an erratic manner and shortly after a vehicle matching the provided description drove by, then returned and parked in an aggressive manner at the officers location. Officers spoke with the vehicle operator and entered into a drinking and driving investigation.

As a result Brittany SUGDEN 40 years of Tiny Township has been charged criminally with the following driving offences.

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on August 8, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

On July 20, 2024, at approximately 12:14 p.m. officers responded to a report of parked car facing west bound on Scott Street Midland being struck by another vehicle also travelling west bound. Attending officers spoke with witnesses and the driver and entered into a impaired driving investigation.

As a result of this investigation Heide Lailonnie HANSEN 53 years of Midland has been charged criminally with the following driving offence.

  • Operation while impaired – blood drug concentration

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on August 1, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Murder Update: Justus CHESTER Arrested & Victim Identified

(MIDLAND, ON) – Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged an individual in connection to a homicide investigation in the Town of Midland.

On July 15, 2024, the OPP attended a residence on Seventh Street just before 1:00 p.m. and located a deceased individual. A second individual was located in the residence and transported to a hospital for medical attention. That individual has since been arrested and charged.

The deceased has been identified as Julia BRADY, age 23 from Midland.

As a result of the investigation, Justus CHESTER, age 26 from Midland, has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder, contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on July 22, 2024.

The Southern Georgian Bay Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Another Homicide

(MIDLAND, ON) – Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are conducting a homicide investigation in the Town of Midland.

On July 15, 2024, shortly before 1:00 p.m., the Southern Georgian Bay OPP, Simcoe County Paramedic Services and Midland Fire Services responded to a call for service at a residence on Seventh Street. Upon arrival, officers located one person deceased. A second individual in the residence was taken to a local hospital and transferred to a Toronto-area trauma centre for serious injuries.

A postmortem examination has been scheduled at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto.

While police believe this to be an isolated incident, residents are reminded to be aware of their surroundings and remain vigilant of their personal safety at all times.

The Southern Georgian Bay Crime Unit is conducting the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Deborah Janice MACLEOD – Drunk Driving

(MIDLAND,ON) –  A call from the owner of a parked car on King Street, Midland to the OPP Communication Centre reporting a possible impaired driver had struck their vehicle has resulted in criminal code driving charges for a London, Ontario resident.

Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment were dispatched at approximately 5:15 p.m. July 4, 2024 to the address and in the course of the investigation Deborah Janice MACLEOD age 64 years was arrested and charged with the following offences.

  • Dangerous operation
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 18, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Tyler COPEGOG Arrested Again

(MIDLAND,ON) – Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment responded to a trespass complaint from the Walmart store in Midland on July 4, 2024 at 6:53 p.m. after store security observed a person inside the store who has been trespassed from the business.

Attending officers located the suspect who is known to police at a nearby fast food restaurant.

Arrested and charged with the following offences is Tyler COPEGOG 21 years of no fixed address, Midland.

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

And further with

  • Enter premises when entry prohibited contrary to the Trespass to Property Act
  • Engage in prohibited activity on premises contrary to the Trespass to Property Act

The accused was held for a bail hearing and will be appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice  at a future date.

SIU Invokes Mandate Into Tiny Township Fatal Crash

(MIDLAND,ON) – The Province of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate into a fatal single vehicle crash in Springwater Township.

At approximately 2:40 p.m. July 3, 2024 officers from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were on scene of a single vehicle crash on Crossland Road between Flos Road 11 and the Tiny/Flos Townline Road. The vehicle had two occupants at the time of the crash, one of which was pronounced deceased the scene and the other was transported to an area hospital by County of Simcoe Paramedic Services.

The roadway has reopened as of 10:30p.m. July 3, 2024 after the scene was investigated by members of the SIU.

More Impaired Drivers

(MIDLAND,ON) – Several calls from the public to the OPP Communication Centre reporting possible impaired drivers resulted in two drivers being removed after investigation from area roadways over the Canada Day long weekend.

At approximately 4:19 a.m. July 1, 2024 officers were dispatched to a report from an off-duty police officer with a white Nissan Versa vehicle that was stopped in a live lane at the intersection of Highway 93 and Vasey Road in the Township of Tay.

Attending officers found the driver passed out at the wheel and upon awaking and speaking with the driver, the officers entered into an impaired driving investigation resulting in an arrest and further investigation at detachment.

Charged criminally with Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) is Tyler KOPKA 23 years of Mississauga.

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 18, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Another call from the public at approximately 3:24 a.m. June 29, 2024 of a black GMC vehicle being operated in an erratic fashion eastbound on Highway 12 near Park Street, Tay Township resulted in several officers patrolling the area with a similar vehicle being observed entering a business parking lot off Pine Street, Waubaushene.

Officers observed an occupant of the vehicle flee from the vehicle who was located by the officers nearby in an wooded area and became the subject of an impaired driving investigation.

Charged criminally in this investigation with Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) is Brendan MARCHILDON 32 years of Penetanguishene.

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 11, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.
