Axl BOYD – Assault With Weapon

(MATTAWA, ON) – Twelve drivers have been charged with impaired driving offences by the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the month of July 2025.

One of those individuals was arrested following a threats-related incident in Mattawa, where a weapon was reportedly brandished and the accused was later determined to have been driving while under the influence of an intoxicating substance.

On Saturday, July 26, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the North Bay OPP responded to a report of threats on Brydges Street in Mattawa. One individual had reportedly brandished a crossbow, uttered threats, and pointed the weapon in the direction of the victims.

Officers located and arrested the accused, who was determined to have been driving and had consumed an intoxicating substance.

As a result of the investigation, Axl BOYD, 31 years-of-age from Mattawa, has been charged with:

·        Operation while impaired – drugs

·        Failure to comply with demand

·        Assault with a weapon

·        Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm

·        Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Additionally, the individual received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

George EBBS – Drunk Driving

(MATTAWA, ON) – Twelve drivers have been charged with impaired driving offences by the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the month of July 2025. One of those individuals was arrested after entering a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program checkpoint in Mattawa.

On Friday, July 25, 2025, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the North Bay OPP were conducting a RIDE program on Pine Street in Mattawa. Officers spoke with the driver of a vehicle entering the checkpoint and determined the individual had been consuming an alcoholic beverage. The driver was arrested and transported to the Mattawa OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, George EBBS, 61 years-of-age from Mattawa, was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. Additionally, the individual received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The OPP remains committed to taking alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers off our roads through enforcement and public education.

James PAPP Facing Weapons Charges

(MATTAWA, ON) – A response to a well-being check has led to firearms-related charges following an extensive police operation in Mattawa and surrounding areas.

On Sunday May 18, 2025, at approximately 4:00 a.m., the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a person in crisis who had entered a wooded area in Mattawa. While it was not initially confirmed whether the individual was armed, police received information indicating the person had access to a firearm.

The OPP deployed specialized resources, including the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Canine Unit, Crisis Negotiators, Aviation, and Critical Incident Command (CIC), to assist with the investigation and ensure public safety.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., the individual was located near Burritts Road in Papineau-Cameron Township by members of the ERT and Canine Unit. The person was taken into custody without incident.

As part of the investigation, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Mattawa, where firearms were seized as a result of unauthorized possession.

As a result, James PAPP, 35 years-of-age from Mattawa, was charged with:

•             Unauthorized possession of a firearm

•             Breach of firearms regulation – store firearm – two counts

•             Unauthorized possession of a firearm – two counts

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on May 21, 2025.

Arrest Following Hit & Run

(MATTAWA, ON) – An arrest has been made in connection with a hit-and-run collision involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in Mattawa.

On Thursday April 3, 2025, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision in a parking lot on Turcotte Park Road in Mattawa. The investigation revealed that an ATV was travelling at a high rate of speed, lost control and collided with the driver’s side of the vehicle. The ATV driver was ejected but got back on the vehicle and fled the scene without providing any information.

Through continued investigation, police were able to identify both the driver and the ATV involved.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, officers located the accused at a residence on John Street in Mattawa. When police attempted to make the arrest, the individual fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, the accused was taken into custody.

As a result, Jordan CURRAN, 33-years-of-age from Mattawa has been charged with:

·        Fail to stop after accident

·        Obstruct peace officer

·        Careless driving

·        Drive off-road vehicle – no insurance

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Tuesday May 6, 2025, in North Bay.

Shawn MILLER Was Arrested Again

(MATTAWA, ON) – A Mattawa resident is facing criminal charges related to stolen property.

On October 2, 2024, the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), investigated an occurrence involving several stolen items located on a property associated to the accused.

A search of a property on Highway 533 in Mattawan Township, led to the seizure of a stolen 2012 Tracer Ultralight Travel Trailer, a 2021 Can Am UTV, a 700-watt generator, a compound bow, a crossbow, and a second generator.    

As a result of the investigation, Shawn MILLER, 51-years-of-age, from Mattawa was charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 – in Canada (two counts)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 – in Canada (two counts)
  • Fail to comply with release order
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Cocaine

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in North Bay on October 2, 2024, and was remanded into custody.

Deleho STERLING – Drunk Driving

(MATTAWA, ON) – Single motor vehicle collision results in driver charged for impaired operation and other offences under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and Liquor Licence Control Act (LLCA).  

On September 1, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Mattawa Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle on Burritts Road, Papineau Cameron Township. Upon arrival, the vehicle was flipped over in the ditch. 

There were two occupants in the vehicle and the Nipissing District Ambulance transported the passenger to hospital where they were treated for minor injuries. The driver was arrested and brought to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing. 

Deleho STERLING, 27 years-of-age from AJAX has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Careless driving causing bodily harm
  • Possess more than one licence
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

The accused’s drivers licence was suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days. They are scheduled to appear at the North Bay Ontario Court of Justice on October 8, 2024.
